he doesn't really explain solipsism. solipsism is the philosophy that you can't verify anything beyond your personal sensory inputs. that everything outside those sensory inputs must not exist and that you're the only actual person. a good analogy is to think of a video game where the landscape generates as you move toward it. You're the only actual player in a game full of NPC's and nothing exists beyond what you can see. when you were born the world was born and when you die it dies too.

@Hekateras no because a solipsist says that reality is only what can be directly experienced through sensory inputs and because sensory inputs only ultimately happen in the brain (phantom limb being a good example of sensory inputs without physical interactions) that the brain is where reality is located and that everything else is an illusion. So if the brain/mind dies there's no longer any foundation for reality. if you break the game disc the character and the world dies with it.

@Everfalling Solipsism is flawed because it is a subjectivist perspective. Our sensory system can be triggered by external stimuli. Does that mean those experiences are illusory? Thane simply refers to solipsism, for lack of a better way of explaining his vivid ability to recall memories. I don't think he's a solipsist; he just implies that there's almost no distinction between his memories and experiences in the external world.

With advanced enough technology there'd be no appreciable difference between reality and being just a brain connected to a computer feeding you data. since there would be no external computer solipsism states that your mind is the only sure thing to exist and everything else is suspect. Like being a video game character among NPC's and that when you die, or are simply not around, reality ceases to exist until you can experience it
