@whatever0481 They are very smart. If you do not give them attention they will find a way to get it. Mine stands on top of books or in front of my laptop. They dont take no for an answer. They love to be taken for walks/runs & run outside and chase squirrels. I wouldnt say he is hard to take care of, but he does require time and lots of attention and love. More than other types of dogs. That energy needs to get out! I wouldnt trade him for the world though. I have a vid of mine with balloons!

You're lucky to have him. I had a jack russel just like yours that I found i the streets. 3 months later the vet told me someone was looking for him. I miss him alot. He used to run with my shepherd. He also had short hair and about your dog's size and a spot on it's butt which I called a spanking spot if he gets bad. I don't spank him much though. He was too cute and he could run on and on for maybe an hour or more? I wonder if your dog and my old dog could be great friends.

God I wish I could let my Jack run like that...but my yard isn't fenced in very well and there's a lot of stuff she could get into, and I can't let her run loose without a leash because she would just take off (as evident in the times that her leash has been dropped...)

@Njiwann - the key is not putting the leash on in the first place. dogs that don't grow up on a leash are smarter and more disciplined. He takes off because being off the leash is like "getting out of jail".

@Amidat I disagree....It also depends on the bread, some dogs (Labs, shepards) have that natural ability to be disciplined and stay close to their owners. JRTs are bread to hunt, rabbit, fox ,rat, raccoon that's why they are so energetic and stubborn off the leash. If you keep a leash off a jack from birth it will take off on you at 8 weeks as well as 8 years...it's their instinct to go after anything that moves

@greenmarine5 - you are right to a point. Labs and Sheperds like to chase too because they have a prey drive. Some breeds of herding dogs don't even herd with a human..they do it by themselves. What I was really talking about dogs that "run away" and get lost and can't get home. One of my close friends lives upstate NY and because it's rural where they are their JRT is rarely on a leash. He often goes off for hours at a time and comes back...or hangs out at the neighbors (who don't mind).

I also have a JRT. I took him to my parents house to visit and the next thing we know he has himself a squirel. My mother was unpleased since she feeds the squirels. He has killed 3 mice, 1 rat, numerous birds, ripped the tail off a raccoon with some meat still attached. Raccoon got away, for the most part. When I open my barn door he rips through the building, seeking anything that moves. They are definitly killers. Super cool dogs and great friends. Nice video!
