  • Good lord, somebody give this guy four more arms for all those sets of sticks in this song. I'm quite sure he could have made this song sound just as good with the pair of sticks he started out with. Can you say c o o r d i n a t i o n!!!! DAMN IT MAN!!! Gonna use my only set of sticks for kinlin to start my fire pit this evening now.

  • Why is Neil Peart even in this thread conversation? You can always tell the drummers that don’t know what they are talking about. Neil and Carter are TWO DIFFERENT types of drummers all together. Neil is more technical in nature and Carter is more syncopation and groove. Don’t get me wrong…Carter can solo the HECK out of some drums…but a lot of his solos and fills are centered around the groove. Carter can span multiple genres as well..Neil is not as proficient at that.

  • Dennis Chambers comes to mind sometimes....

  • @Thejbirdy Dennis is one of his top 3 influences.

  • @ambushIV That's so awesome, no wonder Carter kicks butt. So proud to be in the town where they started...

  • I've been a drummer all my life...Neil Peart of Rush was my inspiration growing up...the Carter comes along...UN-FUKKIN real!!! Definitely the best!!! and Dave writes amazing songs...then Carter just puts them up with the satellites...no pun intended

  • It's amazing all that rhythm and all those transitions are coming from within a human being, Carter Beauford.

  • Flawless Victory!

  • all this video has taught me is that i have a long way to go to reach his level

  • He is the Master of Percussion!

  • I was wrong. I was sure Carter had three arms but no.

  • @DanteSpinotti1 perhaps he has a third secret arm but he doesn't use it to play

  • biggest

  • does an1 knows what brand & model are his strawstickis?

they look and they sound very "usefull"

  • @nadir6661 They look alot like some Pro Mark Hot Rods I used to have.

  • @HoboFace100 probably because they are, he has a promark sponsor, or at least he did

  • he can play underwater with this suit no doubt, like it ;)

  • @sorunsalable underwater Carter!

  • One of the best for sure but Danny Carey is the best

  • Flawless.

  • kit sound so good. yay yamaha

  • Anyone know, is that a riveted ride he hits at the end of this?

  • ja tocaram com uma BMW?

  • anyone notice how fucking cool he transitioned from brushes to sticks? It was like, one down, then grab both, one in mouth, then toss the other one... wow... I'm just gonna practice that for a few months.

  • @LeopoldGold1 I disagree, I didn't hear him speed up at all, and I think that face was just his normal "im a badass" face

  • easily the greatest ever. if i had to describe him, I would say "subtly complex".

  • Don't be discouraged. He is great and one of my faves, but, even Carter makes mistakes. If you notice in the beginning of this vid when his main groove starts, he rushes the time a little bit and catches himself and slows it down to where it needs to be. He even makes a little face when he does this at about 1:28, but corrects it and keeps groovin. I'm sure he was used to playing live at little quicker tempo and got a little excited here. Who knows? It happens.

  • @LeopoldGold1 Wow what a ear you have, i didnt even notice until i reed your comment, very true he was a little over the tempo.

  • Q .Is there a better drummer?

    A. NO

  • @Stonedog1746 NEAL PEART FROM RUSH IS WAY BETTER

  • @chubphucka wrong, different styles, means you cant compare.

  • @chubphucka are you kidding me dude really? hahahahahaha xD Peart has NO SOUL to his playing. He does not groove at all while playing, he makes it look like its not a fun thing to do. This guy mastered ambidexterity at the age of 13 haha. He is pretty much one of the greatest...

  • @dwattzdrummer wow....cracking a smile and laughing while playing the drums......it sure takes alot of personality and effort to do that....kids gimmie a break.....thats right KIDS.....all you think you know today is because of websites like this.....if u were actually around when most music was actually born like rush for instance then u would know better.....just because 50 of ur school buddies all agree on the same thing doesnt make it so......kids will be kids.......

  • @Stonedog1746 i totally agree with chubphucka ;] but he still is amazing xD

  • THIS GUY SUCKS...at ukelele

  • @beezel73 fucking lol!!

  • He plays musically, he uses almost every pieces of equipment and he don't overplay the rythme, his playing supports and serves the song. In the pocket!

  • too much drummers in the world damn whenever i open youtupe always find a new higclass drummer

  • So ridiculously AWESOME!

  • 7 people have no clue what percussion is.

  • excelente batero, de muy buenos recursos !!!

  • Its not simple, but he never over plays the song.........and unlike most drummers he uses everything in his big drumset.

  • @BiffDigs Seriously man, this guys the most stylish in the business.

  • Comment removed

  • @BiffDigs HAhahahah really? Im one of the biggest Liquid Tension Experiment and Rush fans you'll ever meet but if you're talking about style then even good old Neil could learn something from Carter. This guy's an animal.

  • @BiffDigs To say this guy sucks says more about your knowledge of what constitutes good drumming than any response I could give. BTW, I LOVE Peart and Portnoy. This guy is a monster and I'm sure Mr. Peart and Portnoy would agree.

  • @BiffDigs holy fucking shit, that comment is the epitome of dumbass drummers who think they know what they're talking about

  • @BiffDigs I'm hoping this is an example of sarcasm not working in written format. You'd have to be blind, deaf and dead not to understand how talented Carter is.

  • @BiffDigs MIKE SUCKS HE IS MORE OVERRATED THAN TRAVIS BARKER. neil is good, tim alexander can use work too.

  • @BiffDigs You're a piece of shit, now go kill yourself, neils got no hands, tim can't keep time, and mike is always in front or behind the beat, plz a dog could play better than those guys, THIS IS WHAT YOU SOUND LIKE YOU FUCKING SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABORTED BABY/CAN STILL BE ABORTED A.K.A. EUTHANIZED FUCK-FACE, NOBODY WANTS TO HEAR YOUR DUMBASS AROUND HERE

  • Carter handed me a drumstick at the Greek last year!

  • wow, what a performance!!! Carter's rhythm is just crazy perfect!

  • Just a genuine pleasure to watch him play :)

  • anyway, this is wrong, it says " lessons drum" but this is not teaching me anything, it just makes me wanna quit drumming....just joking, i'll be able to do that someday, no doubt...

  • If you're starting out or thinking about playing drums, do yourself a favor, don't watch this guy. Come back in a few years of hard practice.

  • he's not even fucking trying!...damn :'(

  • I f*cking hate DMB!!!!

I listen to metal, and admittedly, Beauford is one of the best drummers i've ever seen

  • @Luke50001 Ha ha. It's good to be able to admit something like that! It shows integrity on your part. Yes, there are great musicians, even outside of our preferred genre. Rock on.

  • This video is taken from Carter's "Under The Table And Drumming" video. The best thing I learned from it, as a drummer, is to recognize each piece of your kit as a voice. How do you want to speak through the song? It's so much more important than mastering a reggae beat or a 7/8 time signature. Those are technical issues that will work themselves out. You have to find the song's 'voice' and build from there. Carter is a master at it.

  • Anyone can say [insert name here] is better, and you're entitled to your opinion. But until you've been a professional drummer for 25+ years making millions of dollars and making "Best Of" lists, it's really hard to say who's better or not. At some point it's just the material that you play that determines whether people like you. Carter is my favorite drummer, but he doesn't have to be yours.

  • he's using hot rods

  • Tomas Haak is still better..

  • @Zykerie132 you're a fucking idiot

  • @drummingxgodx2011 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ,

  • @Zykerie132 First of all, They cant be compared. secondly, you cant even spell the guys name right. Haake***. Point made

  • 5:21 - MASTER

  • the beast

  • criatividade meeu brother ' massa hein

  • Cara, não te conhecia ainda... Show !! Demais...!!! Muito bacana seu estilo. PARABÉNS ! Ganhou mais um fã. Estarei sempre te asistindo. Abraços !!!

  • Watching him play makes me feel stupid for ever trying to play.

  • @kniklawski It shouldnt make you feel stupid, it should just make you want to play harder and learn how to play like him. This guys is awesome.

  • @LTCantyInc haha this guys is awesome.

  • @kniklawski He makes me feel stupid drumming with pencils in class

  • @kniklawski I feel the same, but one day... one day...

  • @kniklawski you made 7 ppl give up the drums..

  • @oObadphishOo Ouch... not my intent.

  • Is he using lighting rods? hot rods? or thunder rods?

  • i do think this guy is fucking unreal... but i think a major problem with his band is that there's waaay too much going on at any point. it's gives me a headache after a while.

  • A pure Drummer!!

  • Yamaha

  • what drum company is he endorsed by

  • This video really shows the importance of left-hand utilization. Using the left hand for more than the snare and doing those sweet syncopation sets. It frees up the right hand to be more melodic.

  • @YOURNEWBROTHER

Carter learned how to play drums left handed at a very young age because he set his kit up in a mirror image of Buddy Rich, his idol. Once he realized the kit was backwards he was already playing left hand dominant, allowing him to play open handed on a righty set-up. Buy this video! Its called "Under the Table and Drumming" and its incredible!

  • @drummerbill805 i want to play open handed it seems liike u get alot more done that way

  • my favorite drummer! <3

  • Just think.. Had his father found a sitter when he was a kid he would've never seen Buddy Rich and there'd be no Carter Beauford

  • carter is a beast!!! U ROCK

  • WHAT A GOD

  • This video makes me not wanna play drums anymore.

  • DRUMMERS PLEASE SUPPORT THIS DRUMMER! HE RECENTLY GOT HIS SET STOLEN, ALONG WITH SOME OF HIS BANDS GEAR AND VEHICLE IN DETROIT 10/12, BAD THINGS HAPPEN BEFORE THE GOOD ,,,HELP HIM OUT!

  • @simonsmithmusic Thats a great attitude

  • that stick change made me happy

  • it amazing how he doesn't need the cymbals at all to hold the beat down like most drummers would. and when he does he uses them rhythmically anyway. they haven't made a word to describe how good he is. actions speak louder than words anyways, his playing does all the talking.

  • toca de maissss

  • Is there a song happening here? Hard to hear it through the 30 million notes.

  • kinda makes you wanna burn your drum kit doesn't it? lol

  • @oBIGxREDo Not really. But it reminds me I need to be at my kit playing instead of watching others play.

  • sickes shit ever.

  • With a little more practice, Carter will make a real drummer out of himself one day. :P

Holy balls man, nothing else sounds like this.

  • Awesome drummer buttttttttt, Im gonna have ta stick with Cobus. Just sayin

  • @SnakeEyes2461 well kill yoself.

  • @SnakeEyes2461 bro, cobus looks up to carter, he even admits it, haha he even says that he only covered one dmb song bc carter intimidates him... i just disagree, i love cobus too but carter>cobus

  • TRAVIS BARKER..TRAVIS BARKER... TRAVIS BARKER.... HOLY SHIT. I get tired of hearing his name. He is good at what he does (which is bang the hell out of his set), but so are a million other musicians. You just can't compare to carter, gadd, wekl, and a dozen others so PLEASE stop bringing him up on EVERY damn drum video.

  • travis barker isnt bad... but hes definitely not a great drummer. especially in comparison with someone like carter

  • u just gota love the sound of his drum kit. and even more the drummer playing it.

  • anyone that plays drums knows travis baker is on the low end of top drummers in the world. but hey...... hes rich, and im not. props to him. But this guy is deff top 15 in the world today.

  • How is it humanly possible to make up a beat like that?!

  • Very creative drumming! Not a - technically high, but - dull one. (It is technically very high, but not dull!) And sounds excellently!

  • What a god gifted talent?? Wonderful hands!!

  • @twelvefingered Thats what she said

  • Why do i always see Travis Barker comparisons on EVERY FREAKING DRUM VIDEO on youtube about a known drummer? He must be a GOD! [/sarcasm]

  • what mastery of the kit. awesome.......

  • I like Carters diversity on the kit. That seperates him from other people

  • Carter is so beast haha, even when he is just groovin'. Check out this under rated drummer.. also very very talented

    watch?v=snGxAUBMZHY

  • The only thing travis barker is good for is keeping time which is what a drummer should do, guys like this add flavor to music.

  • Personally I don't think Carter Beauford, Travis Barker, or Dave Weckl, or any other proffesional drummer sit around wondering if they're better than each other. I'm just sayin'.

  • @MYNAMETAYLA It's all about that sweet sound of music ;D

  • @MarcoMan033 Exactly :)

  • @MYNAMETAYLA Two of those don't. But I think all Travis Barker thinks about is how much better he is than everyone else. Which, by the way, I find hilarious, because he is possibly the worst piece of shit to ever touch a drumset. Me and 4 of my other friends played drums back in highschool and we were better than him. That was just highschool.

  • @MYNAMETAYLA Silly rabbit, Barker isnt better than anyone.

  • @MYNAMETAYLA This guy certainly doesn't, he KNOWS he's better than them ;)

  • mmm.... good drum lesson...definatly learned alot from that

  • Speechless.

  • Travis Barker is a very overestimated drummer. He's good considering what kind of music he plays, but he can't be compared to Beauford, Harrison, Weckl, Haake, Portnoy, Peart, Ågren, Bozzio, Thompson and so on, and so on!

  • The more I listen to the Dave Matthews Band and the more I learn about Dave, the more I like his music. His music reminds me of walking in New Orleans's City Park on a sunny day, it's all good. Cater Beauford is simply one of the best drummers I have heard.

  • yah. this is a true percussionist. right around 1:40 ish. when dave started singing carter realized he was kinda loud and backed off. you have to know when to shine and enhance the music.

  • so siiick

  • Dave Matthews ruins this song by singing.

  • It doesn't hurt that his drums sounds as beautiful as his playing... just amazing!

  • i know im gonna get negative feedback for this but here it goes.... the roll at 1:12 isn't as hard or complex as it sounds. just one long roll.. no weird paradiddles or anything, just a fast, freaking awesome sounding fill.

  • @drumswhilegolfing101 The only reason i give you negative feedback is that it isn't a roll. Hand speed is the issue here. Carter actually plays single strokes in a lot of places where a lot of people think its a roll. This is a good example, watch it, thats single strokes not a roll, infact i cant think of any where he rolls in this song. You're right its not as impressive as people think it is, but it isn't a roll its single strokes.

  • @BadTanLines yea my bad i mean single strokes but it came out rolls

  • So DRO!!!!

  • Haha cymbal work when he gets the drumsticks out at the end is SICK

  • Easily my favorite DMB song... absolutely amazing.

  • This guy makes everything look sooooooo easy. Man... and this song ain't no easy task.

  • HotSticks FTW!!!

  • Hahaha, pure Ron Burgundy Jazz flute he's jamming with, "Yeh that's baby making music that's what that is!"

But seriously went to the see the DMB in Manchester (UK) last night it was a small venue, a couple of hundred and it was amazing, 3 hours straight absolute class!

  • God this dude gives me chills every time i hear him play

  • i think danny carey is carter, metal style, both are just really tasty and smooth

  • My thoughts exactly!

  • He is Carter Beau(tiful)ford... One of my all time favorite...

  • Teh audio on this sucks its all focused on the left side

  • All bow down to this genius

  • eat more fish

  • Carter makes all of us see how pathetically inferior we are to him as drummers...

    A godly talent.

  • lol nice

  • Couldn't have said that any better

  • word

  • @kanadiankreme

    i completely disagree.

It shows us how well hard work and effort pay off.

he didn't develop this level of skill overnight.

  • if your trying to learn this, PAY ATTENTION TO THE INTRO, he breaks down his beats he uses throughout this song into a more digestible form

  • I, uh, he, well, uh man that was just amazing.

  • Did you see that change at 2:52! So cool! I wouldn't know where to begin if I had to learn how to play like this. It is so busy, yet coordinated.

  • Did you happen to notice the syncopated open/closed hat pattern throughout the verses? That's insane.

  • Haha, no I didn't notice that. Thanks! That is wicked!

I just can't get my head around that he would be able to play this again the exact same way. I've heard this song a lot, both on the record and on live albums, and it sounds the same to me. Crazy!

  • This is disgustingly good.

  • he makes me wanna cry HE"S SOOO GOOD!!

  • ...tonight lets be lovers... :-))

  • I can't believe I'm one of the only 12 year olds I know of that likes this. There's no taste in music anymore.

  • Good for you child! Keep going!

  • was introduced to dave about a 2 years ago and they are my favorite band hands down, im 16 now and will never stop listening to dave. carter is my hero

  • i turned 13 this september and ive been playing dave since i was 10 so....

  • im 13 i love this hes my favorite drummer

  • What's with all the negativity? Can't we just enjoy the man's drumming?

  • did anyone else jizz their pants while watching this

  • everybody who thinks travis barker is an amazing drum god is obviosuly nto a drummer or is a 12 year old homosexual drummer, fucking travis has nothing on classics like carter, peart, bonham, fucking travis is shit
