The fallout games all take place in the "Future" Technically, but the thing to keep in mind is that it's an alternate timeline, when the wars happened in their time, their culture was like our 40s and 50s, hence the music, television, and such. Just think of it as a setting for the game, and not just try to match up with our time. Love the music in this game, but it needed more then the dozen or so songs it had.

@Haruverse C is what happened. A loss of oil, pertrolium, and overall gas usage cause many European/Asian nations to go to war, dissolving the UN. China invaded Alaskan soil to get money/oil from US Oil Reserves due to an unpaid debt (lol, real life possibilities...) and we declared it as an act of war. long story short: Nuked.

@Haruverse In the 50's (which they copied really well, btw), most people didn't know what was really bad or good. They knew that it helped their family, friends, and country, so they did it. There were probably commercials saying, "Buy this, and support America's economy!"
And about the cars exploding, people were extremely nice in the 50's, so there probably wasn't any accidents. I'm not trying to bust your balls or anything, just letting you know. :)
