I have watched John Schmidt play quite a bit, and I know he is a great player, but am I the only one who things that his stroke is a little bit hurky-jerky?
To any complete beginners at cue sports who happen to be watching this, Corey Deuel has terrific cue action; textbook example of the pendulum at the elbow and zero movement except for wrist and elbow. Notice that Schmidt sometimes jerks his head up right after a shot and that will cause you to miss. Follow through and keep your stance down for a moment or two especially when you're applying extreme backspin (unless you have to get out of the way of the cueball rolling back).
@franklinchai Still i think John Schmidt is a better shot maker when hes on his best game, he was playing pretty bad here, i think deuel is a better 9 ball and one pocket player, but he cant run 400+ balls playing straight pool, and John Schmidt did it twice
@pppppcrehan OMG are you serious. at 2:00 he was cleaning the cue ball, and corey is raising his cue in the air to mark his score with the end of his cue.
I've been shooting pool since I was 7 years old, I'm 25 years old now........ I've accomplished so much in billiards the past 18 years, and I still don't have the potential as some of these great people..... Time will tell :)
Who are these two commentators? They're really good. Especially the older gentleman, he has a great personality and an interesting character to supplement watching a game of 9 ball.
@tibyv8 the only thing i can say is when strickland came to greece 2008 he said i have never seen a 16year old playing like you so you can just shut the fuck up!!!!although i didn t mean what i wrote..
@3Nex I believe that was a push out. When someone doesn't make anything on the break, the other guy can hit the ball to change the shot, then the breaker can accept it or turn it back.
i played a few matches this weekend, and i was getting the same exact rolls that john was getting, and also. the rolls here that corey gets, on top of playing good. that will break you down and it seems like the balls just keep rolling funny
In 9 ball, you can instantly win a rack by performing a combination or billiard shot on the 9 ball during your turn at the table.
As long as you contact the lowest numbered object ball on the table first with the cue ball, any other balls that are hit and pocketed during the same shot (either by the cue ball [billiard shot] or an object ball [combination shot]) are counted.
This also means that you can instantly win a game by pocketing the 9 ball on the break.
@OnTheProgram thanks for the explanation - learned something new! i have played many racks of 9 ball and never seen this before. thanks for the clarification.
@JAMESPPH there's a scoreboard above the table, with balls representing points, the player pushes a ball to the right with the cue to signify the point he has earned.
"But he did not keep whitie on the table" haha jim wych :) John just seems like an average player to me.. he can think of the shots but he isnt making them in this match. He is a fine player but on tthis day i kinda feel bad for him.
By the way why does the string only have 10balls on it, shouldn't there be 11?
John is without a doubt a world class player, but I watched him play in person recently and his stroke is very awkward...It's just very abrupt, and not nearly as smooth as most other pros out there...Either way, he still kills it and is a super nice guy as well!
I absolutely love(d) Danny D's comments on Accustats videos of, say, the nineties, and find (found?) him, along with Grady Mathews, the most insightful pool commentator of all, in other words, have great respect for him. But it is true his comments aren't quite as elucidating anymore as they used to be, maybe because he's seen it all, and said it all so many times over that it feels as if he were repeating himself - just a guess. Having said that, I still love listening to his (wiser) comments.
Ok let me straighten this out for you guys. Danny is old yes, but he is a one pocket hall of famer and straight pool world champion. Look up his credentials, he once bowled a 300 game and ran 400 balls in straight pool in one day in addition to being a champion boxer. He was listed as one of the most creative players in the game by inside pool magazine. You guys on the other hand seem to not know "nothin" about the game by those comments. Yes he is old but he could probably give you the 7 at 70.
every video i listen to with danny diliberto's commentary drives me a shade closer to developing homicidal tendencies. i like listening to commentary as long as it's not as retarded as his. they need a new announcer, or announcers.
"On The Hill" derives from the term "It's all down hill from here." / Pool-players adopted it knowing that it wasn't always easy to muster the courage to go down the hill.
He was just frustrated from playing badly all match. He didn't really have a single smooth run and he knew he wasn't running 7 racks when he can't even get proper shape on the 8 ball from a perfect leave on the 7.
great match. great players. thanks bclub great vids. what does strokes matter from the winding circular stroke of bustamonte to the short jabby stroke of hopkins to the fluidity of reyes or the sawing action of davis. they all end up going straight through the cue ball with such precision the rest of us wish for. thats y they pros and we on the computer wishing for a better game. and im a decent player
lol are you joking, corey deuel is one of the best in the world, wtf are you saying bro... they make it look easy i know, but that is because theyre fucking amazing, your a joke and dont know what your talking about. i wanna see you run games, lol.
very stupid shot selection from john in minute 17:01, just stun the ball behind the 4 for a easy shot on the 5 with the option to chose the most convenient angle.
when in battle between two even opponents the best vantage point you can have is the high ground. once you have that advantage the only step left is to claim your expected victory. so when you are on the hill you have a distinct advantage in battle and in pool needing only one to win gives you that type of edge.
Don't worry too much about this match John. You've just been playing too much on regular pool hall equipment and didn't notice the subtle differences on this equipment.
on the hill refers to a battle in the 1950's. once seeing the last surviving Chinese in a pocket on a hill he shouted to his comrades that there were only a few Chinese on the hill. once the Chinese were defeated then the war would be over and everyone could go home. that is the origin of on the hill

Anyone noticed that Corey Duel doesn't have a break cue? Isn't it strange for a professional pool player?
KillByKiss 4 months ago
@KillByKiss Yes, he breaks with his playing cue and so does Strickland. It's rare, but some player prefer it that way (for different reasons).

@KillByKiss
He has a break cue. The cue he used to jump was a jump/break cue. He just wasn't using it for whatever reason.
