IMAX is essentially a 3 story tall screen, a 14,000 watt sound system, crystal clear sound, and picture. Movies are converted into IMAX screen format, from their original form, which is a much smaller picture, so when viewing in an IMAX theater, the picture is in wide screen, when a scene in a movie is filmed with an IMAX camera, the scene is projected on the whole screen, giving you the feeling that you are a part of the movie you're watching. Well, the only Imax movies I've seen have been on the Imax Dome, at the MOSI Musuem in Tampa Florida. It's essentially a gigantic screen, with a 180 degree view. You sit in reclined back chairs, while the movie is projected on the dome ceiling above you. It's an incredible experience, however, if you get dizzy easily, I'd recommend closing your eyes, or looking at the ground.

To answer your question. Imax uses a camera with two side by side lenses to film, so in essence it has a real 3d effect and mimics our own vision. The size of the screen is very large and makes what's on the screen real life size comperable to where you are sitting. So it gives you the feeling that you are really there expirencing what you are watching.

in las vegas in the cesar palace a few years back it was called race for atlantis. it was in 3-D, before the film/ride there was a small room for briefing, then you seated yourself with the special glasses in the main auditorium. not only was the CG ride in an IMAX and in 3-D but the whole steating area was on a hydrolic platform. oh fu*k man... i went on it 5 times at least, your brain cannot tell the difference between that artifical ride and the real thing. it was intense!
