@SJisBack Kesariya balam is a referent to one's beloved, not sure if it refers to a person. Kesariya, equivalent of saffron, means beautiful skinned. I am going on a limb, but the phrase might originate from a romantic tradition where saffron (kesar) was applied to a man's chest before the first night--reference to the custom can be found in Jayadeva's Gitagovinda (2, 25) where Krishna's chest is colored saffron.

Mehdi Hassan was from Rajasthan, and trained in Hindustani classical as well as Rajasthani folk. All his ghazal renditions are based on ragas. To typecast him as Pakistani or Indian is extremely short-sighted and stupid. Sound doesn't have a nationality. There is / was / will be no better singer than him on this planet. Period.
