I watched that BBC series when it came out, a great program. The only thing that disappointed me was that there were not much details concerning the horrors of the 1st Congolese genocide. None of my family owned slaves but I can tell you that some white people feared black people despite having black friends or acquaintances. Slavery was a stupid institution and bears its own fruits to this day; however, the lynchings were reactions to black AND white lawlessness, particularly in places like Cairo Illinois with a river rat transient culture. In fact, blacks were part OF the lynch mobs fed up with the violence in Cairo. Race further complicates what's already edgy.

I watched that BBC series when it came out, a great program. The only thing that disappointed me was that there were not much details concerning the horrors of the 1st Congolese genocide. Most of the deaths were caused by the conditions but there were also a important number that were slaughtered in raids, villagers who didn't produce the quantities demanded of them or resisted in any shape or form were massacred.
