Great tune, with the underplayed "What Can A Man Do" on flip. Were they recorded in UK?? Every copy ive seen is on UK Beacon label, but i used to have a copy of this on US Party Time label, same as 4 Perfections.
Haha the record and the comments bring back happy memories. As well as Top Of The Town, Smiths etc we went to the Whisky A GoGo (The Disc) in Salford and LLoyds (formerly The Oasis Club) on LLoyd St.
this song is ssoooooooooo brilliant it reminds me of dancing all night at a club on the south coast Blocked to buggery it was so brilliant . I, sure it reminds everyone of a club back then dancing what a time it was.
Great times,Meet the girlfriend at Wimpeys, quick drink in The Shambles or Tommy Ducks onto Top of the Town to dance non-stop to some of the best music ever
breaking our necks dashing for that last bus home and all for less than a fiver.
I went to Germantown HS in Philly and one of the guys in this group was in my 12th grade english class. I didn't even know he was a singer at the time. LOve this song shame they were one and done
MR SMITHS ...IF ANY ONE FROM MANCHESTER SOULERS REMEMBER IN 1969-70....DJ MARTIN ELLIS WOULD PLAY ALL NORTHERN SOUL FROM I THINK 9-10PM IN THE DROCKERWEENY AND THIS WAS ONE OF THEM K.T.F
@hocko3456 Wow didnt think there were any Mr Smith's club regulars still around Yes I remember the club I have great memories of my time in that club, I had to travel 30 miles on a clapped out scooter to get there but it was worth it brill place loved it Pat Allen (Burnley & Pendle soul club)
Another gem I used to have on 45 back in Philly in the late 60's. Very into soul and R and B there prior to summer of love days. Great stuff. Could only find this on Northern Soul now a days! You should have seen the kids (black and white) getting down to this at dances in the day. Move over Quadrophenia!
I'll bet they did! It tends to be forgotten among the Britsh northern crowd that US kids danced to this stuff first. But wotthehell it's all good that kids are still grooving to these sounds
@MakingTimeInBoston Goodness!! Did the J Geils Band cover EVERY 60's R&B/soul hit ? The Contours' First I Look At The Purse, The Marvelows' "I Do" and now THIS song. And now, they're BEING nominated for the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME...while the artists whose songs they COPIED get little or no attention ? What is this world coming to ?
A wonderful song.......not many bands can cover it with success, The Dirty Strangers are a band that can...............check them out..................
@donthompson10166 you're right, this is one of the so many great tracks from the 'old days'. Don't think people today make good music, it's all flash & flesh and no talent..........
Love it..this is what insprired J.Geils Band...and then they rocked it..!!! yeah Thanks for posting..have not heard this in sooo many years..The orginal always good to hear!!
Was anyone on here at the Oasis in Manchester when they where on and everybody was shouting for the B side "What can a man do?"..Rather fun at the time as the general opinion was that it was a ringer band put together for a quick tour on the back of them having this hit.....Bit of a cult thing for the whole crowd to be in the same mind....Arrr memorys.
Its years since i heard this record until i was listening to Pete Young Soul Train programme on Smooth FM last Saturday when i heard this record. He play's all the all time great soul music back in the days.
All the ingredients of a great Soul dancer. This was played at just about every disco in every town in the country but never aired at the Twisted Wheel. It simply must have been too popular to warrent a spin .. like 'Spirit in the sky'. Snobby club eh?
Never is probably an overstatement. This song was really very popular. In the same realm as 'Goin to a happening' and 'Spirit in the sky' It was played (to death) in every disco, pub and Wimpy bar in the land. Although the band performed live on occasion I personally don't ever recall hearing 'houseparty' through the Wheel speakers...Though I did have my own copy at home.
Not doubting your recollections - just assumed it was -I was a little on the youngish side to have attended the great old years in Manchester !!! Out of interest were you going to the Wheel around 68/9 ? Can you remember , if you were going , if the Millionaires "Never for me " was played around 69 ? Richard " Cream/Inferno" Cooper told me years ago that it was played around that time ??
