If he was my CO, I would have punched him the first chance I got; no doubt the Base Commander would thank me too - we don't put up with bullying in the RNZN...
Sawyer is a Textbook (nut) case in Criminal Minds.
Memory loss from drugs, PTSD, broken family, schizophrenia. In short, a wacko.
I swear his outbursts are impulsive (from abuse as a kid consistently and impulsively from parents). Irrationality is probably from a mental problem from old age ( eg: that one where you forget), paranoia is from a certain traumatic experience (eg: someone who betrayed him from young, or while serving, or from his own captain betraying him)
In these days a Captain , was a Captain under God. Every Captain would differ in leadership and style, and it would take time for the men to understand what was expected of them and where the boundaries lay. Taking command of a fighting ship called sometimes for harsh measures to maintain discipline and performance. Unfortunately Captain Sawyer has a weak first leiutenant whom he despises, and the doctor who has been his ringbolt for 15 years. The rest are in prison with them.
A whipping boy, in the 1600s and 1700s, was a young boy who was assigned to a young prince and was punished when the prince misbehaved or fell behind in his schooling. Whipping boys were established in the English court during the monarchies of the 15th century and 16th century. They were created because the idea of the Divine Right of Kings, which stated that kings were appointed by God, and implied that no one but the king was worthy of punishing the kings son.
David Warner is indeed great. I've noticed a lot of comments from people saying they hate Sawyer, but I always look forward to his scenes.
What's so great about the Hornblower series is that even the villains are likeable and have nuanced personalities. Both Sawyer and Hobbs are perfect examples.
aside from some unbelievable actions that remind us of Mission Impossible, Indiana Jones, the series is great. I like both Hobbs and Saywer, but I never saw them as villains. Sawyer's just an annoying antagonist/obstacle. In many ways, I think he's kind of like a comic relief in the series. I lol whenever I see him acting stupid.
At 8:36, I think he means caning. Flogging is done on the grating with the cat o nine tails. Usually not done to midshipmen or officers, but has happened. What happened here was he was kissing the gunner's daughter as he was stretched over a gun and caned.
for that matter they have candles all over the ship, for instance in the wardroom. Candles outside of lanterns were almost never allowed aboard wooden ships. Too much danger of fire.
Oooh that captain is such a bastard! Poor Wellard! I really want to just throttle him, how dare he be so mean?! Wellard was just doing his duty! Ooh that makes me mad! No wonder Horatio mutinied against him!
Poor Wellard! Even though I have read the book and knew that it was coming, I still felt SOOO bad for him! That particular captian ALWAYS made me mad in the book. He is so mean and completely off his rocker.
Fellow horn blower fans, i believe some research is due. Look up "Admiral Lord Viscount Horatio Nelson" and compare the similarities

Is the captain addicted to laudanum? He might've gone crazy due to mercury.

Caning a middy was the traditional punishment for mistakes in the Navy.

He was a great captain once....but the stress apparently ruined him for command.
