  • Fellow horn blower fans, i believe some research is due. Look up "Admiral Lord Viscount Horatio Nelson" and compare the similarities

  • If he was my CO, I would have punched him the first chance I got; no doubt the Base Commander would thank me too - we don't put up with bullying in the RNZN...

  • A bunch of Handsome Lieutenants surrounded by rough-looking sailors and Old Senior officers! It's a miracle that Kennedy hasn't started sparkling!

  • Making enemies is such an unappreciated hobby, isn't it, captain.

  • Is the captain addicted to laudanum? He might've gone crazy due to mercury.

  • @3:05 - Dildos

  • Comment removed

  • hes got a severe case of bi-polar..

  • Sawyer is a Textbook (nut) case in Criminal Minds.

Memory loss from drugs, PTSD, broken family, schizophrenia. In short, a wacko.

I swear his outbursts are impulsive (from abuse as a kid consistently and impulsively from parents). Irrationality is probably from a mental problem from old age ( eg: that one where you forget), paranoia is from a certain traumatic experience (eg: someone who betrayed him from young, or while serving, or from his own captain betraying him)

    That's my profile of him

  • Caning a middy was the traditional punishment for mistakes in the Navy.

  • He was a great captain once....but the stress apparently ruined him for command.

  • normally more than just a whim to "splice the mainbrace".

  • David Warner is awesome! Great actor!

  • David Warner plays his role as Capt. Sawyer brilliantly. Dear god what an actor

  • You can just tell Hornblower stuck his dick up Archie's ass and made him his pet.

  • @MajBlood Made you jealous, hmm?

  • @Evilmike42 Haha touche touche. Good one.

  • reminds me of captain queeg

  • Scary when you have a nutcase in charge! Been in their shoes!

  • I want to bitch slap that captain. Who's with me?

  • @VampireDeamonFreak

Yeah but I don't bitch slap, I like to kick him with a hook kick!

  • poor wellard he has such a soft voice too

  • I love how Horatio can't quite resist rolling his eyes whenever the captain is around.

  • Archie is so cute, he looks like a boy in a mans uniform.

  • In these days a Captain , was a Captain under God. Every Captain would differ in leadership and style, and it would take time for the men to understand what was expected of them and where the boundaries lay. Taking command of a fighting ship called sometimes for harsh measures to maintain discipline and performance. Unfortunately Captain Sawyer has a weak first leiutenant whom he despises, and the doctor who has been his ringbolt for 15 years. The rest are in prison with them.

  • the captain has a crush on Bush

  • Great, Hornblower and Archie get stuck sailing with Captain Asshole........

  • But the sailors don't love a stiff breeze....

  • that laudanum looks terrible! ukk! and it's a killer too. Very ukk!

  • HE'S WELL UNFAIR!!!!! OOOOOO IT MAKES ME ANGRY!!!!

  • DAVID WARNER....what a great orrid captain he be arr

  • Poor Wellard hes so sweet.

  • I think Alan Rickman would be awesome in this somewhere :)

  • I think Alan Rickman would be awesome in this somewhere :)

  • Sawyer is so arrogant

  • A whipping boy, in the 1600s and 1700s, was a young boy who was assigned to a young prince and was punished when the prince misbehaved or fell behind in his schooling. Whipping boys were established in the English court during the monarchies of the 15th century and 16th century. They were created because the idea of the Divine Right of Kings, which stated that kings were appointed by God, and implied that no one but the king was worthy of punishing the kings son.

  • "Hurricanes and shipworm"

  • very good mister Hornblower ... Very Good! Gentlemen, we concerne to rely on Mister Hornblower breast!

  • CAPTAIN SAWYER IS MY FAVOURITE ACTOR.

  • David Warner is indeed great. I've noticed a lot of comments from people saying they hate Sawyer, but I always look forward to his scenes.

What's so great about the Hornblower series is that even the villains are likeable and have nuanced personalities. Both Sawyer and Hobbs are perfect examples.

  • aside from some unbelievable actions that remind us of Mission Impossible, Indiana Jones, the series is great. I like both Hobbs and Saywer, but I never saw them as villains. Sawyer's just an annoying antagonist/obstacle. In many ways, I think he's kind of like a comic relief in the series. I lol whenever I see him acting stupid.

  • what are all the buckets for???

  • fire buckets

  • is it me or am i mishearing things?

But i heat alot of middle earth names...

    for example=Buckland,bracegirdle,and hornblower.

the first being a region in the shire and the last two are family names

  • The technology that they used is fascinating! These were primitive times, and they coped well with the limited knowledge about physics that they had

  • The captain's gone mad.

  • bonkers

  • I don't like this idea of a more "creative approach" to disciplining Horatio.

  • Wellard's beating was heart breaking =(

  • "It's not history that concerns me, Horatio. It's the future: that's far more uncertain." nice one, Kennedy - too true.

  • well it is probably not his words, but some writers'.

  • yeah as he was very well educated

  • Bethca Bush is seeing the real Sawyer now, aye?

  • Love the shots of the mighty English ships sailing the high seas!

  • "and to ever boy!"

  • poor wellaed he is so sweet and hes being whipped like an animal for nothing.

  • At 8:36, I think he means caning. Flogging is done on the grating with the cat o nine tails. Usually not done to midshipmen or officers, but has happened. What happened here was he was kissing the gunner's daughter as he was stretched over a gun and caned.

  • for that matter they have candles all over the ship, for instance in the wardroom. Candles outside of lanterns were almost never allowed aboard wooden ships. Too much danger of fire.

  • Lt Bush is so cool. Definitely one of my favourites :)

  • wasn't dat captain guy in da titanic?? i'm sure he played lovejoy!!

  • I´m sure of it to! I know I recognise him from somewhere.

  • anybody agree? Bush's hat is the most balla thing ever?

  • Oooh that captain is such a bastard! Poor Wellard! I really want to just throttle him, how dare he be so mean?! Wellard was just doing his duty! Ooh that makes me mad! No wonder Horatio mutinied against him!

  • @LeChatBlanche He's a Simmerson of the seas alright

  • The Captain is kind of an ass isn't he?

  • @woodstock1330

OMG not an ass...but an ASSHOLE! (Ensure u put capital letters in there so u shout online!) I hope I got ur attention HH Fans!

  • @woodstock1330 Haha yeah. I guess we cant call him an Gentlemen rofl.

  • @woodstock1330

That's the tragedy of it, Sawyer WAS a badass. Now he's just bad, and an ass.

  • @woodstock1330 He's a disgrace to the King and Country. Disgrace of talking about him.

  • Dude I can out drink Dr.Clive. I'll bet anything I can.....Lol....OH Yeah and....ALL HAIL LT BUSH!!!!

  • Here here! 'All Hail Lt Bush!'

  • "I believe I will stand it well enough" - that was brave of him!!

  • I know!!! The poor boy...

  • it is bucklands fault. a first mates job is to steer the captain, he stands weakly by

  • The man is bedeviled, Horatio! That's all I have to say. I never liked Wellard, but I always felt sorry 4 him!

  • Why don't you like Wellard?

  • cause, he's a little boy, and its like....likeing a brother, and I'm not into that:-"....

  • I didn't really "as a crush", just in general...

  • I love midshipman. Their place on board is fascinating. I feel very sorry for Wellard...and all the officers under Sawyer.

  • It is fascinating, so fascinating in fact that I'm writing a novel on it... :) Good luck to me!

  • Poor Wellard! Even though I have read the book and knew that it was coming, I still felt SOOO bad for him! That particular captian ALWAYS made me mad in the book. He is so mean and completely off his rocker.
