  • Wonderful to see this, because no footage of the original Korps Wielrijders band appears to have survived.

The Korps was disbanded early in 1940, just before the German invasion. The Dutch High Command simply hadn't the heart to send the poor sods out on bicycles to face tanks and dive-bombers.

  • Never I have seen a military band preforming while riding bicycles with such precision! FANTASTIC!!!!

  • @TenoreDB Das freut mich, ich hatte jüngst eine Nachrit darüber erhalten das die lustige Truppe sich aufgelöst hatte, gut das sie noch da sind :).

  • Wat een bazen!

  • no passport in 1942

  • Yes, tulips from Amsterdam

  • dit vinden die moffen prachtig

  • Formation cycling and do the band drill at the same time...

    Now that's skill!

  • Note that the bikes have no brakes, and the pedals are tightly coupled to the wheel. Note some if the instruments: no slide but valve helicon trombones and helicon basses.

  • @tweha72 as far as I know the bikes do have brakes, but they are operated by the pedals. Just push the pedal in the reverse direction. Thats quite common in the Netherlands, nor is it quite difficult to ride a bike with one ore without hands. A lot of Dutch do this every day, including myself

  • @Rens1989 No you are not correct, The brake system you are referring to is the so called 'terugtraprem', and that is very common in the Netherlands indeed. But these bikes are so called 'doortrappers'. The pedals and the wheels are tightly coupled. If the wheel spins, the pedels do as well. You can even drive backwards with these bikes.

I was part of the band when we performed a similar act during the Musikschau in March 1989 (Stuttgart).

  • I was in the predecessor of this band in '88 (drafted in). We managed to get these old (authentic pre-WWII) instruments, bikes and uniforms from historic collections to use in shows like this.

I participated in the March '89 show in Stuttgart.

It was just: hop on the bike, take some tours on the parking lot (about two days rehersal) and go for it.

This band still exists!! they perform a regular act walking and this bikeroutine. last august they performed in Edinburgh: saw them live.

  • wow this brings back some memories. I was in this band in '91,all drafted back in that time. we didnt have years to practice as we only served a year so it was more, get on your bike, follow the one in front of you and try not to fall .. :)

  • Playing an instrument with one hand....and driving with the other.Unbelievable!!

    Great performance.BRAVO,musicians of the Netherlands.

  • en die drummer zonder handen aan het stuur? wow....

  • wow! knap!

  • I'd like to leave my MP3 at home and have these guys follow me when I ride!

  • absolutely amazing! never seen anything like it! bloody brilliant! tulips from amsterdam brought a tear to my eye. well done the netherlands. come to the edinburgh military tattoo. YOU WILL BE A SMASH!

  • @MrJimmyboy1972

They were there in 2002 as 'normal' military orchestra with a show and as bicycle-band.

  • @rfggj missed that one, was in another place. great stuff.

  • @MrJimmyboy1972

Also in comming august there will be a Dutch orchestra: Fanfarekorps Koninklijke Landmacht 'Bereden Wapens'. They have the traditions of this bicycle-band, so probably they will be there this with their bikes...

  • @rfggj i would love to see and hear them.

  • @DutchyinBrasil

Krijg jij lekker de vinketering met je bommen op Amsterdam mongool.

  • My lord! I can't ride a bike properly let alone play an instrument at the same time!

Well done the Netherlands :D I like!

  • My God! Is that the Dutch Mounted Division right there?

  • Geweldig saluut aan het Regiment Wielrijders!

  • Tip: bicycleshowband Crescendo from Opende in the Netherlands, also on YouTube.

  • Haha I wonder how many people fell from the bike while the reharsals :P Amazing job!!

  • Hoe heet deze muziek?

  • This is amazing! Well played and well executed. If only marching bands could play as well when they march!

  • This is an absolute hoot ! How do they do it? A most unusual display by a very fine band. Brass instruments must be specially made for bike riding. It must take years of rehearsal. Well done!

  • They do have specially-made ringed horns for this band. Although I believe that some of their instruments are actually vintage items because Dutch bicycle infantry did actually have their own band many years ago.

  • Thanks very much for the info. My, one learns something new everyday. I'm actually quite enthralled as to how the snare drummer steers his bike. As a drummer myself, I doubt that I could do it. Cheers Hartley.

  • I was actually a side drummer (snare drummer) in a cadet band some years ago. I now play B-flat flute.
