  • So you use aluminum oxide in windows for high pressure apparatuses, because it is strong and thus suited to the task. But it's also extremely expensive. Why not instead use a very very think piece of glass instead? Seems like it would be cheaper...

  • F-16 fighters have a synthetic sapphire canopy. A 1kg granite ball fired at it at 300mph shatters and doesn't scratch the canopy.

  • 5:19 - Nice guys don't always finish last, eh? It makes me happy to see he married such a beautiful young woman! :)

  • Question is, is the diamond in your wifes ring still there or did you burn it? ;)

btw I would really like to see a video of you burning some diamonds

  • Prof. Rarity, PhD. is now CANON!

  • Imagine his honeymoon! Imagine what his chat up lines would have been... "You know, that's a rose cut Diamond.. Diamonds will burn away if heated and plunged into liquid oxygen ;)"

  • Where is the official description of the ring? I smell wikipedia!

  • 5:19 awwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  • Sapphire is used in high-end watch crystals as well.

  • Was this the first or second threat to burn a diamond in this series? This man is big on burning diamonds, that's all I'm saying.

  • Burning diamonds has got to be the most expensive lab demonstration i've heard of.

  • Here is a ring with some carbon and some iron contaminated aluminum oxide, I love you!

  • Ive subscribed ;)

  • hehehe he hasnt changed much since his wedding

  • that is confusing ! i thought you meant pieces of vegetable.

  • you can make synsethic "gems" at home if you have a good burner: melt any metal, alloy it with melted glass, and its pretty cheap and based on the metals, it determines the color

  • Nice.

  • "damn... u are supposed to be the prince! and all you bought me is aluminium with iron in it?!?!"

  • @Mormagor666 ALUMINUM RUST

  • Artificial rubies have one other practical application - in valves of some pumps (i.g. in HPLC pumps)

  • I remember being lectured by you during the Exploring Chemistry workshop of 2010!

  • So her ring is rusty aluminium... :-)

  • the general name is corundum

  • Nice class :)

  • You should have talked about refraction index : Gemstones cuts are made with certain angles because of their RI. Oups! sorry, physics. :S

  • Do people recognize you in the street?

  • Wow the prof and his wife are a handsome couple.

  • LOL! your wedding picture.

  • i find all of the videos from this channel to be very interesting. I can watch these all day

  • The professor's wife is so beautiful, just sayin lol

  • Haha, great video. I'll be sure to fire the ring up and dunk it in liquid oxygen if I ever get one xD

  • When I want to learn something boring, I go to school. When I want to learn something awesome, I go to Periodic Videos!

  • "But chemically, it's really quite interesting" Are the bes words i can ever hear.

    WOOH!

  • Your wife is beautiful... why did she marry you? lol jk we love you and your periodic table videos!

  • lol his afro is cool.....thats one cool professor i would love to be his student

  • Thank you so much for the very interesting lecture:)

  • great gemologist

  • Punching above your weight! Your wife was fit!

  • That man is brilliant.

  • Not trying to be funny or anything but in tthat photo of him and his wife he looks a little like screech from saved by the bell!

  • tanks for lesson

  • Wow, if even he was young once, i might have to start believing my parents

  • I once did some work on a ruby-bearing rock from northern Russia. We were vaporising the rubies to work out their oxygen isotope composition. The first time I did it I left the vacuum open, and sucked ruby vapour right out of the system. Most expensive mistake I've ever made.

  • i would like this professor in my school :P

  • Why is industrial sapphire, used for pivot points and co-ordinate measurement, pink? is it impurities that are too expensive to remove or are they purposefully adding the traces to change the mechanical properties (e.g. make it as hard / dimensionally stable as possible)?

  • @lexichronicle2 i think it has something to do about it being a large chunk and not in a "diamond" shape

  • @lexichronicle2 I highly suspect that they simply choose the additives and proportions for the maximum usefullness of the properties of the stone. Natural gemstones are, without exception, always containing impurities, defects in the crystal-grid etc etc. They are much inferior to modern man-made xpecimen. but what makes the natural ones so extremely valuable is that they are quite rare

  • The prof. hasn't changed a bit since that wedding photo, just his hair has gone grey :D

  • I think you should just wait it out. When Kate leaves William, she'll be down for burning her ring to get the gold out of it. It's more literal gold-digging.

  • shouldn't this guy be working on some doomsday weapon?

  • Yes Somewhere outside the UK-R-Tard....It is A war Prize from the Ottoman Empire..... Turkey is Rich with Aluminum...It Is a Conquest Stone.... and has nothing to do with the House of Windsor...... This Stone is of the House of Edward

  • It was the Hilt of Harolds Sword lame ass. It is the Rightful Property of Edward the Confessor and property the Heirs Of SAXE-COBURG_GOTHA. After Consecration It became Trust to the House of Edward. It is Repulsive to think these Half breeds would Dawn our Jewels......

  • If you were judging off the value of the gemstones and the white gold, (i.e. an equivalent ring), what would you say the fair market value would be? Setting all sentimental/royal value aside.

  • 3:23 i just noticed the scren saver and how it seemed like it went from one laptop to another o_o

  • How come Professors live longer than drug addicts or retirees? It must be brain activity that keeps people alive. So stop killing yourself with tv and video games and do something.

  • @SmitHolm its kind of dry though. better to have lived a good short life then a dry long one. NOT promoting drugs, just live life to the fullest, which for some people is doing this, for others its not.

  • @mmmsdtv1 Yeah but living life to the fullest can involve things besides doing whatever your body says it wants.

  • @SmitHolm of course it can! doing what this guy does is "living life to the fullest" for some people, and im sure he enjoys what he does, why else would he be doing it? I just thought id share my opinion that sure tv and video games are great once and a while, you need time to chill. However, making the most of your life doesnt always have to require book-smarts and "school knowledge".

  • Hey!

Can you come up with a equation between, How smart you are as a scientist VS just how crazy your haircut is.

It seems the smarter the scientist, the crazier your hair is!

  • New shoes,stil suite,black jack...sharp dressed men

    thumbs up

  • soooo sweeeeet /watch?v=qy623awiAxo

  • hey i remember you! You're the guy that did something with oranges to demonstrate helium!!1111

  • @HiJaayD we've done well over 300 videos! you should subscribe! :)

  • Einstein had a SON?!

  • In short:

    Your hair is awesome.

Dissolving chromium into aluminum oxide creates a ruby.

Dissolving iron into aluminum oxide creates a sapphire.

Natural sapphires are worth much more than synthetic ones.

Diamonds are created from single carbon atoms binding to four other carbon atoms, each.

The cut of a diamond makes it more valuable. We understand better how to cut diamonds now than we used to.

Your wife is gorgeous, and this cements you as the most badass scientist I've ever seen/heard.

  • Thats Mother Creators ring

  • this guys hair is intense ! :D

  • Must be Giorgio Tsoukalos' friend

  • you make me feel like a complete genius just listening to this

  • Is you're wife was smoking hot back in the day. You must have used some periodic table magic to land that!

  • your hilarious, in an awesome way buddy ;]

  • he drinks too much red bull

  • Is the carbon model a dog toy?

  • mad scientist ?

  • this dude is a fucking stud. rock on homie.

  • hair.

  • it the mad scientific dude. wht up teach teach.

    thats strong

i wonder if that had anything to do with their mariage that it will be a strong one and rich.

  • it the mad scientific dude. wht up teach teach. lol

  • 20 people don't have a sapphire ring like us (:

  • wow....shiny!!!

  • uh was that a bong?? at 2:38 XD

  • Alright Einstein

  • mad scientist

  • The engagement ring is a huge expense when it comes to getting married. However, jewelry can be looked upon as an investment. It's important not to get into a lifetime of debt over one piece of jewelry; the appreciation may not outweigh the interest expense. Also be sure it is properly insured. See more on saving money for your wedding on our channel, MoneyTV.

  • I reckon this is quite interesting. Thank you for the video
