Troops are authorized a certain number of baggage during their travel to be paid by the government. If they exceed the number of items authorized, they must pay on their own. So this situation all depend on the number of items they were authorized.
So if soldiers are entitled to free checked baggage, why can't you or I get free checked baggage as well? I'm better behaved, I'm not bombing and killing little kids and civilians in the Middle East.

Isn't Delta airlines a private company? Why should it matter whether they were in the military or not? Rules apply to everyone equally in a free market (not that we have one). To say Delta should not charge them is to say Dunkin Donuts shouldn't charge them for donuts. If anything, the government should reimburse the soldiers for these charges. The extra baggage fee, however, does seem steep to me, but people if the airline says no more than 3 bags, and you show up with 4, then you should expect and accept that there's going to be an extra charge. I think they could have at least given the soldiers a discount on the extra bags, though.

This story got a lot of attention and of course I was outraged right off the bat. Looking further into the story though there are reimbursement provisions for travel for our veterans in this situation. At first glance it's MAJOR RANT MATERIAL. The Airline should have handled it better but they were covered for their additional costs automatically via their travel agreement with the Federal Government.
Am I missing something here? Delta airlines is a private company and even if they decide to charge someone extra because his ass is too big, they should be allowed to (in a free market economy).

My husband was a career military officer and is now an employee with an airline. I am sympathetic to both. However, it's highly annoying to me that a kneejerk reaction with a cellphone has caused so much undeserved bad press to a company who prides itself with its relationship with our military. Much of the airlines are made up of prior military personnel. It's a reimbursable expense. The government is paying it. This is not coming out of the troop's pockets.

Isn't Delta airlines a private company? Why should it matter whether they were in the military or not? Rules apply to everyone equally in a free market (not that we have one). To say Delta should not charge them is to say Dunkin Donuts shouldn't charge them for donuts. If anything, the government should reimburse the soldiers for these charges. The extra baggage fee, however, does seem steep to me, but people if the airline says no more than 3 bags, and you show up with 4, then you should expect and accept that there's going to be an extra charge. I think they could have at least given the soldiers a discount on the extra bags, though.

Looking further into the story though there are reimbursement provisions for travel for our veterans in this situation. At first glance it's MAJOR RANT MATERIAL. The Airline should have handled it better but they were covered for their additional costs automatically via their travel agreement with the Federal Government.

My husband was a career military officer and is now an employee with an airline. I am sympathetic to both. However, it's highly annoying to me that a kneejerk reaction with a cellphone has caused so much undeserved bad press to a company who prides itself with its relationship with our military. Much of the airlines are made up of prior military personnel. It's a reimbursable expense. The government is paying it. This is not coming out of the troop's pockets.

That said, I don't think they should get special treatment just for doing a job that no one else wants to do. Lots of people have jobs no one else wants to do.

I think that the bigger problem for Delta, or any other airlines & Boeing, is to make the seats & leg room bigger. People are much bigger now than they were 20 years ago. I felt sorry for a lady in front of me who has to sit by a fat man that his love handle keeps touching her arms. I do not put my foot on your sides, so I do not want your fat on my sides either.
