Facebook had 20 million users and was growing at 100,000 per day in June. These numbers have increased since then.
Meanwhile, the Ivy League in total has less than 150,000 active faculty, students, and staff.
To claim that Facebook is constrained to the Ivy League or to Eastern academia is preposterous: in two days, the site will add more 50,000 more people than the entire Ivy League in total.
