  • at 1:25 why is there a gate

  • Nice video work, but you need to recognize the big difference between "abandoned" and "not in revenue service". City Hall on the IRT and City Hall on the BMT are not in revenue service, but they are in daily use by NYC Transit - City Hall IRT is used to turn around Lexington Avenue local (6) trains from the downtown side to the uptown side and City Hall BMT is used to store extra trains during off-peak hours. 18th, 91st, Worth are in fact abandoned.

  • Thanks for the video, excellent work. If I might ask, do any of those stations still have cars in them? It really is as though there's an entire city under the ground that so many people are oblivious to, just think of all the work that went into creating them. :(

  • Metro 2033

  • yeah i remember those stations when i was younger i use to ride the trains and saw plenty of stations that was not in use,and i always use to wonder why, thanks for uploading this video, that city hall station look real pretty, with that decorated round shape.i knew the subway system was so damn large.that is another world under ground.

  • very cool. may i ask how you get to these stations?

  • Why are there so many abandoned stations?

  • mignight meat train. there could be demons in those stations

  • did they still have trains rolling through the abandoned stations? i would imagine it would be difficult to reroute around those stations without building new tunnels

  • there is a new chambers st station..was built a few years ago..the old one has been closed up.

  • INCREDIBLY haunting video. I might be tempted to actually explore some of these tunnels if I wasn't so frightened of what or WHO might be lurking down there.

  • @edgeninja The people down there are not bad. most are friendly as long as you make sure they know you arent tranist authority or a cop

  • is a shame all the hard work to build um they just let them go into disrepair.

  • Chamber st Is just disgusting

  • this vid is like a guide for the world to come over and fix these places up with some good graff, love it.

  • Youtube is for videos, not pictures. :P

  • Many have lights and activity because trains travel through them without stopping. Others were too close to each other. Over the years, as nearby neighborhoods changed, one of the stations was closed. The City Hall loop is still very much in use because the Lex local uses it a a turnaround, like South Ferry, which was recentl replaced.

  • There are very few totally abandoned subway stations in NYC. This video is very misleading. Take 42 st -- only a lower level is abandoned. The upper level is very, very busy. Some of these levels were originally built for projected new train lines that were never built.

  • these places u took pics of r a good place to get killed.

  • How did you get the chance to take these photographs tho? Are you like one of those tunnel wanderers??

  • Remains of an era..

  • @754GLENMORE ???

  • @754GLENMORE Hahahahahahahaha....meth does crazy stuff!!

  • you forgot MTA musem downtown brooklyn station and like 20 more this video show me nada

  • The graffiti art makes certain areas look better and less neglected/abandoned.

  • @fr8ARTruleZ At least they are keeping the walls painted. XD

  • Why not build residences?

  • @mvhuse Would you want to live in a smelly damp noisy tunnel that still has trains running through it or over it?

  • The last one...City Hall ( IRT ) abandoned?? With those beautiful stained glass windows?? That's a shame! The music you chose is not a shame!! For all the bugger headed asswipes that keep asking what the music is...read the description! And if you don't know who Portishead is...you fail anyway!!

  • @gyqz The City Hall station was abandoned due to safety concerns as the curved platform made a rather wide gap for passengers to negotiate. Even though it's not in use, the City Hall (IRT) station is quite beautiful and a admirable reminder of a by-gone era. It should be a museum in my opinion.

  • @gyqz It was the same station they used in the second "Ninja Turtles" movie.

  • @gyqz That's a shame because it looks beautiful for an abandoned station.

  • this makes the London underground look like heaven.

  • HOw can I get here?

  • @msnubootysux You already are here.

  • Well really bthe real reason that Chambers street was neglected Because of 9/11 but now it looks like that they are now refurbishing it wheile the new towers are being buit

  • @SketchupDesigns12 wtc chambers is not the only A train stop many more trains stop on chambers is a street name WAKE UP go look at mta map and 911 was an inside job ONe more time wake up your govenment blew up the world trade and you still love them.what a shame deep asleep you stay

  • i want to see a video were they are walking on the tracks

  • Abandoned and neglected? You talk as if the stations were alive or some shit, its a TRAIN STATION wtf is wrong with you? lol

  • @Casideee they are alive lol. The whole city is and its sad that the atwork and designs have been left to rot. Artists and builders of today do not have that kind of creativity its sad they do not.

  • QUESTION.....I see a lot of abandoned subway tunnels and stations ...why are there lights on in some of them if they're not in use.....I've seen other videos that are supposedly abandoned, too, with lights on...anyone know?

  • @1206Simi Some have minimal lighting for emergency exits, some are used for track workers. At least one (Myrtle Ave after Dekalb) has a "moving" art display from the 70's that was in disrepair for awhile but may have been restored. It has multiple images behind a slotted wall that, when lit, look like a moving figure when the train goes by.

  • Urban Spelunking is awesome

  • Why do they even leave these abandoned? Just board 'em up and reassure passengers that the subway is mantained and there are no ghosts!

  • man, a slideshow..

  • creepy

  • 42st is not abandon its in times square

  • @TheiPodguy250 Yes, Times Sq-42 St is still quite in use, but it's lower level was abandoned sometime near the 80s, and has recently been demolished.

  • @Watchthetube2140 chambers is neglected?

  • @MrNintendoguy1 yes by the J train. the side that goes to brooklyn. you have to see it for yourself.

  • @Watchthetube2140 Seriously? The station is already demolished? I remember going down there few times after school to take pictures. It was certainly the easiest abandoned station to get into.

  • @Watchthetube2140 Which line(s) used the lower level?

  • @TheiPodguy250 The lower level of 42nd street has been abandoned for years they use it for storage

  • @TheiPodguy250 the lower level is

  • Sad to see

  • Thumbs up if this should be the site of Blair Witch Project 3, in a post apocalyptic setting where they're trying to figure out why beings from the subways are haunting the survivors of the apocalypse XD

Wait... sounds too much like metro 2033

  • @evolutionpr

Really cool movie idea :)) but it should be about a mole people witch :)) not beeings from the underworld... write it up and send it to Lionsgate perhaps :))

  • @RoninVargaz Think there's a documentary that was filmed in a mole community in the subway tunnels.

  • Just wondering. Does one of the Brooklyn ELs towards coney island still exists but has been abandoned for at least 15 years. I saw it as I was walking from and existing el towards some camera shops 15 years ago.

  • Civil Rights results....and don't say it's not !

  • MUSIC TRACK? NAME?

  • @XuLePrOdS The music is Roads by Portishead

  • WE WROTE GRAFFITI IN ALL THESE ABANDON TRAINS STATIONS .ASK ANY REAL GRAF WRITER AND HE CAN WALK YOU THRU THESE STATIONS WITH THERE EYES CLOSED . • @kjrehberg Quit whining

  • @kjrehberg You idiot! Get a life!

  • all good places for a band of crazy homeless guys to kidnap and rape women at

    get the video camera!

  • just remember, as long as tracks still run past the stations there is always a possibility for emergency useage

  • worst is Court St. Borough Hall for 2/3/4/5/R...hot, crumbling, smelly, crowded. After that, Fulton/Chambers for 2/3/A. BTW there are abandoned LIRR stations throughout Queens.

  • @sethdog1000 Bryant park is horrible too, so is the lower stations in brooklyn from 14th to stillwell

  • Comment removed

  • do they have any use for some of these stations for example... mow equipment?

  • Like the video...keep the music...needed to shut the sound.

  • U 4got 3 ave-138th street that station is neglected

  • are there still strains in them

  • waitt what movie was it that had the abandoned city hall train in it.. it looks soooo familiar in some movie

  • how about myrtle av upper level?

    money st. platforms?

canal street and bowery (other side)

  • Here in buenos Aires, Argentina we had a few abandoned subway stations that has interesting stories about them. Anyone has a reason why they have been abandoned or given other uses.

    Greetings

  • cool

  • I agree with Chambers St. They need to clean it up -__-

  • @xXrockyiszhereXx That station is terrible -__-

  • ratmans somewhere down there. i know it!!! that bastard was running when i was driving through the subway..eer nevermind

  • Wait, I know what you mean now. "Hoyt-Schermerhorn: abandoned/in use." There's one side of the Hoyt & Schermerhorn station that hasn't been in use for decades. When I used to catch the G at that station, I used to stare at that side of the station wondering why it wasn't in used. I remember now.

  • Hoyt-Schermerhorn is abandoned? Is this the same Hoyt-Schernerhorn where I used to catch the G train at from 1983 up until 1994 (I moved to Queens)? How can it be abandoned AND in use?

  • I was hoping to see Jackie Estacado at City Hall...

  • who wants to play fallout 3

  • Chambers street is the worse tunnel...the smell of piss..tiles coming off the wall..shit is crazy i felt like i was in a map for black ops zombies

  • well now i know where the nyc subway rats come from

  • haha peep the JA tag at 2:35

  • 2:39 - 2:55 Outside track connects to the Transit Museum.

  • Hold up, Nevins St. is not abandoned, I use it every day!

  • @Samoliver Yes, but Nevins Street has an unused/abandoned lower level.

  • @Watchthetube2140 My question is, how does the Train Operator know when to close the doors in those curved stations, without passengers getting caught in the doors? Since the Train Operator can't see them?

  • Why are they even abandoned in the first place? isnt it cheaper to fix them than to build new ones?

  • @luis3826 Some just outlive their uses, like some abandoned stations can't fit the length of today's train's, for others there is either just no use for them or it's not worth to repair it and put it back into use.

  • @Watchthetube2140 They could use them for something else..

  • @Watchthetube2140 As I understand it, 91st Street was shut down in 1959, when the TA extended the 96th Street station. Question: regarding the 9th Avenue station, where is it, and what line served it? Great vid!

  • And where the ninja turtles at?? lolz......

  • The stations in the Wall Street/City Hall areas were beautifully built....with the mosaic tiles and art work....it's a shame that they became abandoned and neglected.

  • It really would help to say the name of each train line these stations are on, there are several stations with matching street names, hello?

  • Really creative movie of the underground.Shame about the sound which is a liitle distorded for me,maybe try filters ?next time, thanks for taking the time out to post it for viewing.nice work .

  • WWIIIIIIIIINNNNNNSTOOOOOOONNNNNNN!!!

  • I believe Chambers street was ruined due to the September 11th attacks, but I'm not sure. I always see 18th Street.

  • What trains went through 91st street?

  • Ruined by shit music and shit effects. I've seen better tunnels in your mom's undies.

  • i love abandoned and neglected places the atmosphere and feel is strange but good

  • WTC E train station is partially abandoned and been re-routed the stairs to lead towards C-A line. but R train station Cortland st, station has been abandoned, it never re-opened, they claim that partial station has been opened, but they always by-pass it..

  • @phadukaran From what I remember, it's being rebuilt, and the Manhattan bound R trains actually stop at that stop. :\

  • animoto?

  • oh, also scary!

  • WOW time 1000,000

  • World Trade Center's station. Is it in use or Abandoned?

  • @Ohet006 It is still under construction

  • @Ohet006 it reopened when they rebuilt it

  • The song Roads- Portishead works perfectly here!

  • awesome video reply and i will subscribe

  • beautiful song, anyone knows who sings it?

  • @BabyLove2003 portishead "roads"

  • 2:37 is a picture of JA a legendary graffiti bomber :D

  • What year were most of these stations decommissioned?

  • to remain closed, just goes to show how big the US is,i live in England,if we have a empty stadium 90% of the time would be knocked down, and rebuilt on,facinating stuff

  • Why does New York has so many abandoned subway station???

  • Hoyt/Schemerhorn is always being used for movies. For example The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009), SALT (2010), Hanging With The Homeboys (1992), Coming To America (1988) & a music video made by MC Lyte in the early 1990s or late 1980s.

  • @csouth28 Don't forget: Michael Jackson's "Bad" video was shot at the Hoyt/Schemerhorn stop.

  • @csouth28 When in the Taking of Pelham 123 was that station featured

  • @NJTCOMET When Garber Was Delivering The Money To The Train At "42 Street" & When He Drove The Train Through "42 Street" Was Actually Hoyt-Schermorhorn Sts.

  • @csouth28 oh i see it now, thank you :)

  • 2:49 looks ok 2 me

  • it would be awesome if u could fix up nd furnish an abandoned station nd use it as a clubhouse

  • these are very good pics. im 16 and what is considered a "train buff" and i love and know almost everything about NYCT; my parents both worked for transit. and i am currently doing a documentary on nyct for my school project to be submitted to the tribeca film festival and this peice has really inspired and sparked another idea for my film. this was really good work, on everything from the shots to the music and the editing. good work, oh and whats the name of this song, its hot.

  • why are they abandoned? do they run out of funds to keep them open or are they just falling apart?

  • @luis3826 many stations have been used in the past like in the 1920s or in the 70s but the mta didnt need those tracks or just had no money for them,so they leave the trains stations like that. its pretty sad.

  • was there graffiti down there from the 70's and 80s?

  • Since when is Hoyt/Schermerhorn abandoned? I used to turn out of there - I know there was a closed platform and a closed east end mezzanine. It was 25 years ago though. I've *got* to see the old City Hall station. Nice work...

  • @hogdriver88 The outer platforms of Hoyt Schermerhorn are abandoned. They used to be used until quite some time ago. That's what the photos were trying to point to

  • @Watchthetube2140 And thanks!

  • @Watchthetube2140 Thanks for the quick reply. That closed platform has been used for movies. I worked in the subways in the early-mid 80's, primarily Brooklyn, so have a certain attachment to Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the tunnels...

  • @Watchthetube2140 They still use the outer platforms for shooting movies though.

  • Song? :o

  • @sKratch1337 Roads by Portishead

  • @Watchthetube2140 Such an amazing song... Kind of gives you a feeling of lonelyness :o

  • So wait a second, at 3:00 what you're saying is that Chambers street is still in use? By those pictures, it looks scary and haunted. (Sorry I from the San Francisco Bay Area where we have Bart (bay.area.rapid.transit.) which is like the Subway for San Francisco and the other cities surrounding it). You should research it sometime!

  • @impulsw Yeah, Chambers St. is still in use. It's freaky, but true.

  • I live in NY and I only knew about a couple of these stations. For one thing, I always wanted to see what's in the lower level of the 9th avenue station. I figured it was a training facility since it has the sign "training" on it.

  • @Matoro4Ever I always wondered about the lower level at 9th ave as a kid. I used to think a killer was down there and if you go down there you'll die.

  • @GAMEFAN501 I didn't think that. :P

Although I remember having a nightmare about it as a kid. But when I actually thought about it, looking at the training sign above the doorway made me think that it was used for new conductors to get used to the controls.

  • Very interresting video all that abandoned places. I did't expect this. Specially the lower 42nd street level. Thanks.

  • Interesting video
