I try and use canvas bags but of course I always manage to still have a ton of plastic bags, so I take my plastic bags and cut them up and crochet them into tote bags and give them to friends to use at the grocery store.
Cool. I'm making a short film about this issue. It deals with the fear that, if we don't do something about plastic bags, they'll rise up and attack us!
Re-usable canvas (or similar fabric) grocery bags work great. My local grocery has been selling them at cost (no profit) for a couple years. They're very tough, hold as much as a standard brown paper grocery bag. Handles don't break, even with heavy loads. They've become very popular and most customers are using them now. The ONLY disadvantage is that you do have to get into the habit of remembering to bring them along when you go grocery shopping.
Plastic grocery bags really can't be recycled easily. The best way to deal with them is to either 1) reduce or 2) reuse them for some craft project. Just on youtube, I found two videos showing ways to use them to crochet a tote bag or to iron-fuse them to create a messenger bag. Either one can be used for grocery items rather than wasting more plastic bags.

Recycling plastic is bad,
To prevent global warming, Carbon taken from the ground should be returned to the ground in what ever form possible. Plastic included.
