  • This song reminds me of a gentler day...

  • What a beautiful song and woman.

  • Freddie Mercury (Queen) did a great version of this.

  • @sherhrtatk - That he did indeed - under the psuedonym Larry Lurex. R.I.P Dusty and Freddie. They were both legends! If only they been in the studio at the same time to record a track together. I'm not saying Goin' Back, because their versions are great and different from each others.

  • A totally Beautiful song brings tears to my eyes everytime i Hear it ,No one can touch this version

  • so much talent period!!!!! she is singing to god and his angels now how lucky are they!!

  • Quite simply, nothing comes close to this, absolutely wonderful ! Today`s hippo mouthed yodellers haven`t got a clue, all hype and sweaty full volume effort but sadly no class, no individuality, and all sound virtually the same. Thank you Carol and Dusty,

  • This was the song that was played at Dusty's funeral, and this is the song I have picked out for mine....I just love it and have told everyone this is the one!!!!!!

  • @kimmixxxxxx That is interesting for me especially. I sang this song at my Mum's funeral in October 2010. Mum and I had both admired Dusty and the other mourners pronounced my effort " poignant".

The song always reminds me of my Mum and saying goodbye but in a wistful, not despairing way

  • I also like the version by ELKIE BROOKS

  • @Thepast2012 Dusty Springfield recorded this tune in 1966 a year before the Byrds did.The tune was written by Carole king and Gerry Goffin

  • Dusty & Queen.... Both versions are amazing, because this is amazing song :)

  • I've never heard anyone else singing this, and I don't want to. This is pure, poignant, irreplaceable Dusty.

  • brilliant

  • What can I say? Pure essence.

  • Can't stop crying when I hear that song sang by Freddie Mercury... So pure, so simple, so... Magic !

Oh Freddie, I wish you can go back, we miss you so much.

I love you. Forever. And ever.

  • this was my favourite Dusty track when it came out and decades later it still is and ALWAYS makes me cry! She surpasses all praise. Thanks for giving me the chance to listen again,

  • Fantastisch gezongen met zo veel gevoel

  • it stands to reason roger mcguinn, got the byrds to cover this carol king ,written song . he worked with her at the "brill building" in tinpan alley as a music arranger. david crosby did'nt want to do the song because it did't seem like byrd music.but the harmonies mcguinn arranged for it were so beautiful crosby did something he almost never does.....admitt he was wrong.

  • This was my Dads funeral song, never cried so hard listening to a song befoe.

  • This is one of her best such a brillant talent

  • Whether you had a good childhood or not, this song has something everybody can relate to. Once again, Dusty and Carole King prove themselves the perfect duo!

  • Superb Dusty. We will ne'er see your likes again.

  • what can you say just great

  • @GEMINISTWIN1 Here here!!!!

  • Carole King herself said nobody sang "Goin' Back" better than Dusty Springfield. She ought to know, I'd say, and I totally agree with her. In my opinion, "Goin' Back" is a perfect song for Dusty's soulful delivery. Dusty's version is the gold standard, and no male singer or group even comes close.

  • Extremely emotive. This is my all time favourite song and beautifully executed by the late great Dusty.

  • Dusty was perhaps the greatest British female singer of the era. Her voice was full of feeling - God, I miss her................

  • @TV175mod She was Irish actually. Both of her parents were 100% Irish and her real name was Mary O'Brien. Her ashes were scattered in Co. Kerry

  • @PassWorId Wow!!! I had no idea she was of Irish descent!!!! I remember dis song from an Irish ad years ago (I was very young) an' I tought her voice sounded Irish (strangely enough)!!!!

  • @TV175mod not perhaps. she was and still brings joy to me

  • This song is bringing me back now to my youth which I am going to have to do soon. I think this song will be the perfect vehicle for it. It was used in a sweet little ad in Ireland during early 80's advertising our national electricity provider( back when ads were innocent and more effective )

Dusty, you are still bringing us joy. Thank you from my heart.

  • It's not as good as Paul McGrath's version.

  • The Best for ever more

  • So great to hear this again. It is my favourite version. I still like the others but this is the one I keep in my minds eye!

  • she's British but her name sounds american

  • @BackInAGiffy . Irish actually, well Irish emigrant parents. She was born Mary O Brien and changed her name to dusty

  • @shrickman didn't know she had irish parents or she changed her name

     thanks :)

  • One of Dusty's best.

  • beautiful vocal, beautifully written song

  • Remember hearing this on the Bord Gais ads (I think) as a child.

  • @GEMINISTWIN1 True, however, Dusty's version is the one I instantly fell in love with on first hearing as a child, and now I'm an old bugger, even though others have recorded good versions in their own way, none of them really ever touched the original for me! That husky voice full of emotion, that haunting lilt, gets me still.

  • R.I.P. Dusty loved your voice

  • This is the real thing - forget all others.

  • Great song. Elkie Brooks did a cover which was very good too.

  • Elton John said he'd like this song to be played at his funeral

  • Neil Tennant's favourite!

  • you gotta be kidding, the best version ever and the original one is freddie mercury s recorded when his aka was Larry Lurex

  • This was Dusty's song, BRILLIANT!, no other version touches this one! This song makes me cry everytime I hear it.

  • @kazzamac1000 same here - the line "live my days instead of counting my years" always makes me well up. One of the best vocal performances ever.

  • @kazzamac1000

This song was used very effectively in an Irish Television ad over 20 years ago, see "1980's ESB advert Going Home".

An aspect of interest here is that Dusty was of Irish extraction, her real name was Mary O'Brien.

  • Carole King recorded a version of this song in 1980 for her album, PEARLS: SONGS OF GOFFIN AND KING.

  • The perfect song,sung perfectly

  • Love Dusty singing this, beautiful

  • Epitome of real talent and charisma...

  • Who wrote originally this track?

  • @MrRenealexis Carole King - one of the best songwriters around

  • @sap59red Carole wrote the music, Gerry Goffin wrote the lyrics.

  • good thing phil remade thid song

  • A haunting version, you are sadly missed Dusty.

  • This song was made for Dusty to sing, but then they all were. It was a moderate hit compared with some of her others, but deserved better. Thank you for putting this up. It's a great song no matter who sings it.

  • My first listen of Dusty doing this. Beautiful tho after listening to the Byrds' version for decades it sounds a tad slow. On to Carole King's now... then Queen.

  • Love it =)

  • Thanks to YT our loves never die .We can see and listen to them as they were before age and tragedy took them .Star star star .Say no more .

  • What we should all do - And live my days instead of counting my years

  • Dusty we will ne'er see your like again. You are a talent that is so unique. Miss and love you.

  • byrds version is best without doubt

  • I'm in pieces everytime I listen to this

  • good but not as good as Freddie Mercury's

  • @tdevil101 DS version reduced its composer Carole King to tears when she heard it.

I dont think Freddie Merc is in the same league.

    Listen through some decent earphones

  • @tinker1960 You´re right, Freddie Mercury is not in the same league, he´s in another one, the better one, of course.

  • @TheJumpyPopcorn I think not ...neither would FM

  • I will Have "Catch me if you can, I'm going back" on my gravestone. Love you Dusty.

  • This has to be my favourite Dusty song and believe me there are many; her rendition is sad and emotional.

I think even Carole King who wrote the song, said it was the definitive version. I have to agree.

    Love you Dusty.

  • Every time I hear Dusty's Goin' Back I can hardly reach the end without welling up. Haunting is the right description for her interpretation. Dusty's voice draws on regret, desire, melancholy, and gives the lyrics a meaning well beyond the words themselves. Others have tried nobly with this song, but only Dusty makes it real.

  • What an "Extrodinaryly Haunting" Voice Dusty Had.

I Love This Sad, Sad Song.

  • @stewmil231 tottlay right, The Byrds mis soul and emotion. With them it's just another Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young kind of song (not saying they are bad, they don't match the profiel needed for this song). Though I tink Dusty did a very good job, I like Phil Collins' version better.

  • I prefer Dusty's version to the others. I think she could sing with such passion and emotion because she had known great pain in her life. From the womans soul most definitely. Great Post.

  • I'm in tears already, only 40 seconds in! This is my personal favourite song by Dusty, my love for this and her every performance will never diminish! A true gift to the world, Dusty's voice and her legend will endure. Like diamonds her voice will always be here allowing us to enjoy it's beauty whenever we choose to reach out for it, even though, so sadly she is no longer with us in person. Thanks bathsideboy for this post I am truly grateful ;) Please support breast cancer research for Dusty

  • THE ONE AND ONLY, DUSTY, ONE OF HER FINEST SONGS, GOD WE MISS YOU, DUST. THE BEST, FORGET THE REST.. OUR DUSTY. colindaleradiosutch

  • I LOVE DUSTY

  • Carole King used to object when performers changed her lyric. Most versions, including her own, sing of electric trains rather than colouring books, toys, rather than skipping ropes' to lend etc, but what the heck? Everyone who loves this song must agree with its composer, this version brings tears to the eyes.

  • While I appreciate her voice, Dusty's version of the song does nothing for me I'm afraid. It certainly pales in comparison to The Byrds' lovely jingle jangle rendition...

  • The only Dusty Springfield record I ever bought - always a tear to my eye when it's played

  • Definitive version to be sure! I don't know how Phil Collins had the nerve....

  • Hiya all.

    R.I.P Dusty: 16 - 4 - 39 to 2 - 3 - 1999. Twelve years ago today at 10.40pm the world lost one of it's greatest female singers ever.

    Ray

  • Catch me if you can******I'm giong back!

We Can't Catch Dusty****** Can We!

    Gone Forever******RIP Dusty

  • Freddie Mercury is better!

  • @cengizkaan

    aaaah...no.

  • @cengizkaan In covering this song Freddie is the best when you're talking about a male singer. Of course Dusty is a female so its different. Great job from Dusty.

  • great tune

  • delicious, rich voice, so powerful, so easy, so natural -hugely underated, sadly died so young

  • Totally agree, in the words of another great song, nobody does it better.

  • just so beautiful, so moving....

  • I love all her songs, this was on of my favourites, I could listen to this all the time. One of the best singers I was a great fan.

  • DL the audio from this vid at thetunify doht cohm.

  • still a queen of the futuremusic

She was so nice and beautifull,,in everything

  • Some nice versions of this song around all right - but Phil Collins 2010 Version can not be topped!

    beesimon1

  • Es geht nichts über Phil Collins' Version!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I first heard this as a teenager many moons ago, and just loved it.

  • Freddie Mercury's version rocks too.

  • @neapolitanjoe I was pleasantly surprised at how good Mercury's version is!!! In fact I was blown away!!!! His version is very different from Dusty Springfield's or Byrds!!!! I actually tink d'song really suited Mercury!!!

  • Elkie Brooks does a great version.!!!

  • You are all right...my late mum got called'dusty'in the 60s before i was born...heavy eyemakeup,hair...but dusty had emotion, sang from the soul like the late eva cassidy.Watched interviews.,also she was blessed with humour and charisma...wonder what happened to all her cats:(This is the only version of this song that brings tears to my eyes...lyrics are some what true also.godbless her.

  • And yet...the Byrds version is better. Fuller and more fluent.. Dusty somehow missed the point here. Her notorious aim at perfection perhaps, but her vocal performance turned out a bit flat and tired.

  • @dedeurs i cant agree because a song like this should strike a deep chord of emotion which dusty does i have heard many sing this but only dusty made me cry maybe its just personal or maybe the flatness and tired quality adds to the weight. I guess music is a magic that affects us in different ways. The byrds mr tambourine man has a similar affect but for different reasons mostly because it evokes childhood memories.

  • @dedeurs

Are you mad? This is the definitive version of the song, Even Carole King said she cried with emotion when she heard Dusty`s performance. Listen to The Byrds attempt at this and if you think it`s better than Dusty there`s something wrong with your ears.

  • @stewmil231 The Byrds' version of this is a true classic from the psychedelic era. Those of us who lived through that can't imagine this song being done any other way.

  • @stewmil231 Can't we just like all versions? Who cares whos is the "definitive" or better version. Just listen to the music.

  • @stewmil231 its apples and oranges friend. dusty version is a solo the byrds a group harmony. both are to be enjoyed for what they are not to be compared. dusty version is beautiful. the byrds version is beautiful too with rich soring harmonies. perhaps its your ears needing an adjustment.

  • @stewmil231 Love her to death, but I prefer the Byrds version, too. And I'm as big a Dusty fan as you'll find

  • @stewmil231 I am a big fan of Dusty Springfield and The Byrds. This is my favourite Dusty song with that great orchestral backing in the middle. but I do like The Byrds version as well. It's that great guitar sound which featured on so many of their hits. If you asked me to choose..well I would just side with Dusty's version.

  • @stewmil231 The byrds version is better dusty sings a little flat the tempo is too slow and the strings water down the arrangement chrissie hyndes version is better too

  • @spacepatrolman you're joking right? This is the definitive version. Others record this song at their peril.

  • @tinker1960 no im not joking how could it be at others peril if they never heard her version

  • @spacepatrolman Hmm, agree to disagree, the other two versions are good too but i think Dustys yoice is the more Beautiful and suited for this, only an opinion of course!

  • She was a rare talent, sadly missed. You can never mistake her voice for any other singer. Unique.

  • @WalkerBros4Ever very very true.

  • There's something about this version of the song which is very alluring. It most certainly is from a time gone by where real talent existed. I love to listen to it for some self indulgence.

  • A classic song that reminds me of the good old days when everything seemed so much better.

  • so brilliant - so missed

  • there will never be another dusty.......sad loss..

  • Pure unadulterated class! Sadly many young 'uns will miss out on Dusty, but that's a generation thing. It's also their loss. RIP Dusty Springfield OBE

  • Dusty keeps us going back with her melancholy sound to days that were far to short and full of fond memories.

  • Heel gevoelig zoals zij dat kan.

  • Heel gevoelig zoals zij dat kan

  • Just one of the lovliest songs of all time...everyone can relate to it.

Beautifully sung as always by Dusty.

  • forgotten about the song Going Back until Monday night at a Nils Lofgren concert when he sang it, Just had to get back home and see if it was on YouTube, brings tears to the eyes!

  • I got introduced to this tune by the Byrds on "Notorious Byrd Borthers" way back when, but this cover by Dusty Springfield naver made my radar.Like pretty much everything else she did, she sang the hell out of this one, too.

  • Ths song is amazing.thanks for sending Steve. Deb

  • Wonderful lyrics

  • this is such a lovely song makes me weepy. i bought dusty's greatest hits i discovered this song i love the way she sings........ DUSTY YOU ARE GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

  • This is beautiful, I LOVE this version. don`t care for phil collins version.

  • @bashalfca

You should listen to it and watch the video...

  • Carole King, the co-writer of this song, has stated that this is her favorite version of this song. that's good enough for me. this was played at her memorial. I requested that it be played at mine, too. A classic, one that will live on, for new generations to discover. Thank you!

  • Byrds version is better.

  • @borntoend94 No it isn't.

  • @mtend06 The Byrds version is beautiful. This is...lame.

  • @mtend06 yes it is!

  • A truly magical voice. Thanks for posting.

  • I love the Phil Collins version

  • @kerrygordon Love this version, the Elkie Brooks version is better than the Phil Collins version.

  • @Eamonn20a hmmm. i really enjoyed Phil's version. He put his touch on a classic and I loved it :-) Dusty's version is nice too.

  • @mikemacjunkie1 Nah !!! he hasn't a good voice. It's Dusty or Elkie for me.

  • beautiful tune, forgot about it till i heard it on the radio today!

  • From the Dutch: tears, tears, tears....

The look of the eyes, combined with the music.

    This only canbe DUSTY!!!

  • So lovely! R.i.p lady! Another nice version by the BYRDS, another legendary Gary Usher's production too!

  • Phil Collins has just released a cover...good but he isn't Dusty

  • This song doesn't require 'energy' - it requires genius - thanks Dusty.

  • Renee Gayer does a much better version. Dusty never put much energy into this

  • @greywolf271 You're an idiot

  • @greywolf271 why post a silly coment like this nobody here agrees with you

  • What a song the melody gets m every time

  • Carole broke into tears when this was being recorded

  • 05855191...join the queue.

  • I'm still in love with you Dusty.

  • this beautyful song makes me cry

  • Carole King wrote the music and Gerry Goffin the lyrics.

  • "I can play hide and seek with my fears, and live my days instead of counting my years" - great line :)
