  • If anyone is curious to the arrangement, much less the interpretation, please do not consult Handel's Messiah. Consult "A Soulful Celebration", in which the composer rewrote the entirety of Handel's work in R&B and Gospel choir versions. I'd suggest getting both recordings and compare them musically to enjoy both.

  • @janeiromusic25 Thanks for your comment, but I do not want such bad language on this page, hence why I am deleting this comment. You do have a right to opinion, but please do not be overly offensive and crude when I'm sure you've been blessed with more intelligence than that. I will not block you, but please make your comments without the swear word, or I will change my mind.

    Thanks

  • OMG!!! When I ran across this, I was primed to slash and burn and the word "bastardization" came to mind. But, the concept is amazingly powerful. The singer presented intimidated, apprehensive, possibly because she knew the audience had no clue about the nature of this piece. Not to worry, though, Ms.Mitchell.Those of us who know the work realize that you OWNED it.You simply need to CLAIM it next time you perform!Well done to you from an old, Handel classic "highbrow". WELL DONE!!

  • MERAVIGLIOSO!!! marwellous!

  • Thank you very much for this video. I really enjoyed it. She seems very young and he does make her own interpretation of the piece. I love it. Would not compare Patti and her because it would be useless. Performances of this song are so hard to find. Thank you for uploading this one. If you have another performance of Who May Abide, please, upload it. Thanks again.

  • Que guai!! M'encanta.

  • Hmmmm...with different words, the music itself would be alright. However, this vocal style is not appropriate for the text. i think, despite the talent of the musicians involved, that this is a real massacre of the aria. i'm not anti-contemporary, but this interpretation is unsatisfactory.

  • Having just visited your page, I am intrigued with the lyrics you would put to this arrangement, Arcane Master!). I enjoyed Daphne's rendition is based on another version of the piece and not the original; so the comparision is only partially valid at best. However, again all comments are gratefully received and will assist any other production we do in the future on this scale.

Even macgregor42's comments are considered; so Thanks again.

  • @Dougitoons Thanks, dougitoons, for this post. I am most impressed, but I GET it on all levels, as some of these posters (sadly including the audience, as evinced by their only lukewarm response :( ), so very clearly do not. Your kind response to this "master" (?) was gracious and classy.Kudos to you and the cast. Keep it coming!! Love and blessings!

  • a pity the band playing ain't always right. great vocal interpretation! just the accomplishment is a bit thin compared to the "original" Patti Austin version.

  • I def. appreciate the interpretation...kinda cool..minus the dancing it just doesn't work in my opinion

  • Great interpretation of a great masterpiece. The tempo might be a bit slower than I am used to, but much of 18th century music was left open to interpretation, a mistake many so-called authentic performances make.

  • nooooossssss... para... acabaram com a música...

  • im sorry

but handel was NOT MEANT to be sung like this. i dont mean to sound like a prick...but what is the deal with that dancing? it doesnt even fit the song! this is criminal

  • oh, I would not to be so absolute... it's a way of interpreting. Respighi did it with his "Antiche arie e danze", taking old renaissance dances with a full orchestra didn't exist in 1500. And the same set a ballet on Rossini's piano music "La boutique fantasque". Is it criminal? It's just a different kind of operation. I like a lot this vocal performance (orchestra is very bad...) and this idea of Handel according to an african-american sensibility. two Handels could live together :-)

  • I'm usually all for artistic interpretation, I probably could have expressed myself better on that one. My point is just that it doesn't seem to be a proper interpretation of the song, I don't see where the dancing connects with the piece I guess. It could be done more tastefully, I suppose. I feel like if I were to watch this on mute and I thought "They're doing Handel" it would be alright, but it just didn't match up in my opinion. Good point though.

  • @1beldivedremo Great point! Love it and right on from an old Classicist!!!!

  • I LIKE...BUT HAENDEL, I DONT KNOW!!!

  • I LIKE!!! EXOTIC!!!

  • Handel

    have mercy upon them!

  • i was ministered by this today

  • Then this clip has served its purpose. May the Lord continue to bless you each day.

  • Screw you f66w42

  • I LIKED it!!!... I can appreciate this remake of the GREAT classic. Yet even more important to me is it's message; "who shall stand when HE appears?" I pray we all will be ready on THAT great day. Peace!

  • poor poor over song again by a black singger

  • Jackass f66w42! What does black, white yellow or red have to do with it? When Falco ( white Austrian...remember Hitler's origins?) did a remake of Mozart ( Rock me Amadeus) or the Electic Light Orchestra( definitely white!) of Beethovens Fifth those were their interpretations according to their musical inclinations..and I'm sure that was alright by you.

  • A soulful celebration is just what it says and of course it's based on African-American music interpretation ( thank God for Quincy Jones)...I suppose you'd have been happier if the Mormons had thought of it..predjudiced idiot

  • I really think this is a classical piece and should stay that way Marietta Simpson sung it so much better. Some things can be jazzed up but this can't and the singer kept going flat but she can sing.

  • beautiful man, keep praising God like that. That song is my fav of the soulful celebration

  • That's pure garbage...poor Handel, hope he didn't hear that ...

  • Thank you for your comments, good and bad. God bless you for watching. Hopefully, those who did not enjoy this will be blessed with inspiration to provide something better. I personally felt inspired by all of this production, even though there will always be room for improvement. Pray that we get the opportunity. God bless.

  • I agree 110%...this is complete garbage. Handel is rolling in his grave. Why do people feel the need to turn something so great into mainstream crap?

  • crap? it was stiff and tird before they put some flavor to it! White people hate it when we take something of theirs and do it better!

  • coool!

  • guacala...

  • where was this performed?

  • Nottingham 2004. Currently seeking sponsorship to take this show out for 4 performances Nationwide. Any suggestions gratefully received.

  • oh, so this was performed in the UK?

  • ¡Uácala!
