0:40 "Because the proteins are larger than the size of the capillaries." Proteins are not larger than capillaries. Some proteins are too large to pass through capillary walls, which results in oncotic pressure a counterbalance for fluid loss from the capillaries. But proteins can, and do certainly pass though capillaries.

@coomason5 There is a slight firmness and warmth(noticeably different from the normal body temp) in an area that's congested. She is actually moving a bit faster than what I was taught, but, the movements are the same as well as the quadrants addressed.
I believe the reason people are a bit leery of lymphatic work, is when you have a lot of edema, the affected area gets sore. When a therapist who doesn't understand that that area is sore pushed down hard and pushes upward, it hurts. A lot. The gentle moves Athena does looks a lot more tolerable and helpful!
I have this done weekly..I do not feel anything while I get it, however..something is working because my leg is improving tremendously (they measure me each week)
After the massage they put me in my comprssion boots for both legs
I have Lymphoedema and have been to many therapists for Manual Lymph Drainage over the last 20 yrs. Athena has given the best description and demonstration of MLD that I've seen. And given a very superior treatment here.
Though I've read a lot myself, it is most helpful to see someone actually provide such a good quality treatment, know what she is doing and describe how the lymphatics work.
Here in the UK there is an acute shortage of people adequately qualified to provide MLD. Largely because those who organise the training are very aggressive in their delivery. Unfortunately many therapists struggle with this attitude & do not continue in this field. Hence a severe lack of therapists in most parts of the country.
You have inspired me to explore Cranio Sacral Therapists to see if I can find someone as good as Athena who can also do MLD
I have a question, I suffer from Chronic Cellulitis on both my legs, this causes fluid build-up on my feet (more so on the left foot). Would this treatment help alleviate any excess fluid? I'm currently having to wear compression leggings but still get the build-up on my left foot which causes pain and stress.
The view angle is very poor. It hides what you're doing so anything that can be crucial to your technique is not seen by those of us who are trying to learn something. A topographic view would be far more educational that this is. Also you don't go into the theory as how you find these flows you're talking about.
This video seems to assume the viewer already knows about it.
@FletcherHabit Movement will help to keep the lymph fluid moving. If the fluid is congested, the techniques of manual therapy may be needed to stimulate the congestion and clear the nodes. When lymph fluid is not moving, or moving slowly, it has a tendency to become more gel-like. Friction from the techniques will bring it into a fluid. Once the system is working, movement will be more effective.
@wateryskipper It would help the healing, and help to move medications out of system from the surgery. It does take some experience and more advanced training to do the work if nodes are missing.
Speaking as someone who has had Lymphatic Drainage Massage (specifically to relieve the underarms and neck), I'd highly recommend it to anyone who experiences inflamed lymph nodes, very relaxing and very effective.
@jazzplayer9 The nodes feel swollen, hard(ish) and are tender. Sometimes the surrounding area is endemic. When pumped they fill up very fast. Once the flow is occurring, the nodes do not fill quite the same. So much of this is difficult to explain. Once drained the client/patient feels better upon completion of the session.
those towels make her look like she's in a gown =)

Sweat is bacterial and as she said she was going to be working on other parts of the body it was a hygienic precaution..

Why are there paper towels in the armpit? Does she have body odor? She doesn't use anti-perpirant?

@adekenyon I doubt it. Do you exercise? How is your diet? Fix those two things and the body will handle all the rest of the problems on its own.
