Leaving the side-doors open prevents the "oil-can"-effect, which to me was worse than the rotor/engine noise. With the doors shut, imagine being sealed inside a steel-drum, with both-ends constantly flexing in and out.
Lots of crews weren't above "loosing" side-doors, for that same-reason----not to mention overall weight-reduction.

I got to once fly in one over Devils Lake, ND. Awesome chopper. And I got to ride in a Blackhawk over the Black Hills of SD including Mount Rushmore.
