  • The most important part of an altar set-up is to have representations of the Enlightened Body, Speech, and Mind. This is represented by a Statue/Image, a Dharma text (preferably a Sutra), and a stupa. If the statue is consecrated then this is generally sufficient as the mantras inside fulfill these three, making the statue the same as having an actual Buddha present. All else is secondary or tertiary. Thanks for the video.

  • i loved it i used it and i stil have the same shrine

  • Hi , thank you for making this video. It is really nice and instructive,

    and nice to watch!

  • You need incense too

  • @russel123you Yes, It is true that you do need incense. However I didn't have any at the time, and forgot to mention it. Thank you for mentionging it! :D

  • @russel123you I have birds, and burning incense or any strong chemicals indoors is very bad for their respiratory system. I wonder what else I could use?

  • Dont worry, I brought a small ceramic bowl from target which I use as an incense bowl and filled it up with sand. I also made my own incense bowl from ceramic clay. Though it doesnt look extravagant but when I look at it, it makes me smile. There is always something about simplicity that rings a sincere beauty ^_^

  • Thank you for creating this video. It has been a great help.

  • i love your vids you help m so much

  • thanks this helped me so much

  • Hi. I just wanted to say how much I love your video! I am fortunate enough at this stage in my life to have some very beautiful altar things. But this was not always so. Loved the whole walmart thing. One of the most amazing Buddhist statues I found was at that horrible store. It was just waiting for me. You are lovely soul. Namaste.

  • Thank you, this was perfect and really helpful! Cheers!

  • One of the best things about this video is that it made me feel a lot better about not owning Shakyamuni Buddha either.

  • I love your video, I just wanted to say to people that you shouldn't get hung up about not having pretty a altar, the altar is there as a place of focus where we can meditate and concentrate on our inner thoughts, the altar is simply there to remind us of the daily inner striving to reach enlightenment, some of the best altars I've seen are those that people fill with objects that help them focus.

Again thank you for the video : )

  • This is very true. An alter is just used to focus. I think people get caught up in "the alter has to be extravigant". Me personally I would rather have my alter be simple.

  • Glad you liked it!

  • lol! walmart fill your buddhist needs!

  • Because i read allot of his holiness the Dalai lama i would answer your question about ill deeds ect among various relions well honestly all i can say to that is do what his holiness does for the chinese everyday. He doesn't hate the chinese people or the government for that matter he does however have compassion for them and that is how I treat people who have done ill to me i still have compassion for them. I do a metta meditation every morning for all beings

  • I am too not against His Holliness The Dalai Lama Ayla..I am also not too much concerned about the chinese people or govt.. But somewhere i felt that some Buddhists were so extremely clinged and attached with their religious values, that they even didn't bear to analyse what the actual issue was and they blindly made situations worst... afterall the Buddha has himself said that "Do not believe anything but with proper understanding and analysis" I wondered why that was not followed....

  • i cannot speak for all buddhist personally. i can however say that when I was 16 I researched and at the time I didnt know it but I did as the Buddha said and esearhed and analyzied each religion before becomming buddhist. Not all buddhist do this however because they may have been born into it ect. There are so many reasonas as to why people dont research before becomming a certain religion.

  • I meant I did as the buddha said and researched. Gorgive me I was typing to fast.

  • yeah... i go with ur words... I think that people must research and study the religion before they take it up...

and keep making videos about the Buddha and His Teachings... His Teachings are utmost needed in today's fast changing world...

  • @AylaCale you seem as if you treat buddhism as a religion. I remind you that it is a way of life and you should not lose urself in rituals. Keep in mind that "holy" in budhism is related to wisdom not to diety like in other faiths and that Buddha was only a man not a god. Keep up the good work,

  • @PotatoJim So true, if fact I rarely preform "rituals". Instead I use the Buddhas teachings in everyday life.

  • that tumbling sound of bowls scared me...

  • To answer your question Shakyamuni Buddha is Siddhartha Gautama the founder of Buddhiam. Avalokiteshvara is a Bodhisattva who embodies the compassion of all the Buddhas. Avalokiteshvara is also known as Chenrezig and said to be incarnated as his holiness the dalai lama. A bodhisattva is the name given to anyone who, motivated by great compassion, has generated bodhicitta, which is a spontaneous wish to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all living beings.

  • yes the tumbling of the bowls scared me as well. If you look real closely you MIGHT be able to see me jump.

  • can u plz explain me the difference between a Shakyamuni Budhha & avalokiteshwara Buddha...

are they different types of Buddhas or is it one with different names???

Can I follow just one and only one unique Buddha and instead of worshipping his statue, can I practice in actual life His teachings of compassion, loving kindness, humanity, non-violence etc???

Can I become a true Buddhist by actually applying Buddha's teachings in life and not just reciting the literature???

  • When I bought the statue of avalokitesvara I researched it before hand. Amitabha and Avalokitesvara do look the same but the statue I have of Avalokitesvara is his 2 arm form compared to his 4 arm or even 1000 arm..

  • Oops! I meant Amitabha!

  • Hey Ayla,

I stumbled across this video and I think that you've got alot of good info. I particularly like the fact that you said you couldnt afford all the fancy things...its all about humilty and offering what you can. So thats awesome.

On another note, I think the buddha image you have is actually Appermita, rather than Avalotikeshvara. But they do look similar.

    Keep it up! =)
