What a shithead I am. I punched "Nils Lofgren" to see if anything was going on with the musician I met years ago on M Street in DC!!! I don't know whether to hide in shame or just bust out laughing! Nils!!!!
i cant believe this, this is the most unbelievable feeling guitar solo i have heard its absolutely crazy im not saying hes the fastest or the best guitarist but this piece has hit a special part its bloody amazing i cant believe what im hearing its phenominal :D i want the record i really could listen to this daily like i have done with Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing :)
You must be one of those that only know him from the E street band! I have been seeing him live and buying his albums since the mid 70's. I'm telling you, he loves playing w/ Bruce but he just in the last few years of touring been able to show some of his stuff. ( now if Bruce will just let him sing once in a while! )
Bill Lawrence pups, and Larry Cragg made the pick-guard from a piece of Oak, i saw this Strat when it was still in original condition many times in the seventies, it was my dream Strat, ....natural finish with a rosewood fingerboard, and the scratch-plate (pick-guard) was black with white pickup covers and control knobs, ......."come on Fender.....make those again........please"!!!!!
@MITCHWILD that may be a bill lawrence pup in this vid, but in the past nils used a joe barden in the neck, like one of his DC area heroes, danny gatton.
That is NOT a 1961 neck at 0.30 .. it is a modern replacment neck .. the neck pick up is replaced, the bridge replaced ,pickguard replaced.. not really much left of a "1961" strat here .. bit of a silly title to this video. That isn't the guitar I watched Nils play 30 yrs ago !
They are definitely Golden Gate thumbpicks. I asked him a couple of years ago after his show in Manchester and managed to find a shop in the UK that sells them :)
Nils is such a Rock God. He really is IMHO the BEST guitarist out there. I hope this video gets more views b/c he is so freaking AMAZING on stage. BUT is should have been done somehow on a split screen so you could see his wild gyrations as he's playing. AMAZING!!
"underated". People who knows him always rate him TOP CLASS, so, maybe he his just not known enough. Personnaly, I rate him top 5 of best performers in todays rock stage.
I know. In the other video you can see that maybe the neck and body of the guitar are the only original parts. He has graphtech string trees, a Gibson speed knob for his volume control, a weird new jack, and all 3 pickups replaced with blade humbuckers. It makes me want to cry. I mean its okay to swap out a few parts in a strat but not an original '61 strat assuming it is in great working order. One can only hope that this guitar is restored from a beat up rocker beyond its prime.
I realise that this is a 1961 Strat but I've played a 1963 Strat a while back, but it was right handed and I am left handed so I had to play it upside down.
It was still absolutely beautiful though. You can't beat vintage Fenders.
i play with the strings like albert king you know? I learned to play regularly, but i was in exile for 3 months in my uncles house and he had the most beautiful hand-crafted acoustic guitar i ever saw. With the urge to play something, I just started to learn how to play upside down. Came back home and restrung my strat. Heh.
holy shit! you really realize the unbelievable playing that nils is doing after seeing taht shot on his guitar, possibly the only guitar player these days playing that melodic stuff but still a little left of center as not to get boring. thanks fender for giving more attention to one of rock n rolls most underated guitar players
Tom Morello was awesome but Nils has the edge with melodic interpretation.

I love Nils because he finds those perfect minor notes, and digs into them and plays them out for all their worth.

you may be able to get useable tone with high-dollar pickups, but the stock pickups on my strat don't do much for me. I like teles.

Nils is an Ace player - lookout the 1975 'Nils Lofgren' album for some real classics. BTW: What is it he says he keeps blowing??

His 10 inch speakers, he replaced them with 12 inchers.

what's so bad about a humbucker in the neck?
baconstealer1 2 years ago
Its bad when its an ORIGINAL 61 strat.
Besides that, nothing beats the sound of a single pickup in the neck position in any a strat.
katarzis27 2 years ago

golfnut20 2 years ago
this is the top reason why i learned to play upside down, without inverting the strings.
VercettiVice 2 years ago
I can still play fine either ways but better with a left handed guitar.
But yeah, I can see why you would want to be able to play these kind of guitars with your best ability.
