i think people don't give the guitarists of dillinger the credit they deserve. i dont know how they use to write together, but you should notice that chris is hitting all the accents that the guitar is hitting. it sounds all crazy and chaotic and mathy because the guitars are the same way; chris is doing a fantastic job of masking and adding that flavor that we all love. i'm a drummer and i love chris, but acknowledgement is due to the band as a whole for helping write drum parts.
I don't care what people say, Coheed is and always will be my favourite band. And Chris Pennie is not wasted, he obviously gets to play a completely different style then before, you can't say he's wasted when he's doing a different style. Child of the Fence for life<3
@FluffyMuffina Yeah dude exactly, Coheed and Dillinger are two of my favorite bands of all time, and seeing everyone dissing one or the other because of Pennie's switch is just super disappointing. You can like both for fucks sake haha
@monssavmik exactly. a great band to match his tallent. really give their guitarists and bassist a listen if you cant stand the vocals (big turn off for many people). they are very well rounded musicians
That's a perfect description. Miss Machine feels like a concept album in more than one way. It's hard to believe such level of technicality can be so powerful without turning into something boring, quite the opposite. It's like being stabbed in the balls!
Is Chris the one responsible for that drum sputtering in 82588? I heard he recorded a few of the tracks, but I think that is the single most mind-shattering moment in Dillinger history.
I dont know....as a drummer, I do like the new guy but the precision and Jazz-infused licks of Pennie just cant be matched...one thing's for sure,he is completely wasted on Coheed and Shitbria.
@Reegatron2 Seriously? have you not heard Guns of Summer? he goes into insane polyrhythms in that song. He may not be playing crazy mathcore any more, but he's still creating beats that are far above most drummers' calibers.
Yeah but that's the thing you see....I am of the belief that Chris Pennie was put on this earth to absolutely shred balls at breakneck speeds like a man possessed.
Sure his expertise blows every other guy out the way, but is he ever going to reach such heights again without being part of the wild animal that is Dillinger?
@Reegatron Maybe him being in a more well known band IS better for him. He could get the notoriety he deserves and eventually take his drumming career to totally new heights. But no lie, DEP was an absolute beast of a band when Pennie was in it.
@Reegatron2 Coheed and Cambria are not shit at all. They are just a different genre (one you don't like it seems) but they are all great musicians. Chris's tallents are wasted in them i agree and Coheed is my favorite band so i hear you on that one. Im both a coheed and a dillinger fan. kinda rude remark just because you don't like something though.
yeah true it would be a rude remark....if it werent for the fact that theyre shit muahahaa I wish Dillinger had broken up sometime between releasing the Patton EP and Miss Machine. That way they would have had a perfect run... (you might have guessed at this point that I think Dillinger, too, became a bit shit after a certain point, even with Pennie still on board).
Why cant hardcore bands take the hint and break up after 2 albums! Instead they go on forever like NOFX

Peenie was indeed the essence of DEP. Dillinger are such a drum-led band in terms of how their songs are played.Itt really won't be the same anymore...but then again,I don't think anything they did after Calculating Infinity could beat that record. Irony is a Dead Scene EP was great,Miss Machine was disappointing, but it's never gonna be as good without this guy.
have you guys seen gil sherone? the new DEP drummer. he is the sickness. i am sad to see chris go, but gil kicks so much ass that i am not going to let it bother me. "fix your face" is awesome.
Both Chris pennie and Ben Weinman wrote the music for Dillinger. "He's my musical soul mate." Weinman says of Chris Pennie. So this is CERTAIN blow to the band. Dillinger won't be the same but i am certain weinman and puciato can come with crazy shit as well.
yeah, well - I still wouldn't call it such a BLOW since I don't think they'll totally loose their ability to write good music or play really astonishing live shows. I think the bottom line is that, if this would've been such a devastating thing for the band - they would have quit already. I still like both Chris as a musician and DEP as a band and i'm not here to flame anyone. I just strucks me odd, like people have already decided future's going to suck.
Yeah,I'll be honest..I had serious doubts about DEP as well when Chris left,he's unbelievable. But I saw them last night with Gil,and I can assure you they havnt lost anything live. Gil has done a nearly inhuman job learning the old stuff, and I was incredibly impressed with how tight the band was.If you closed your eyes would think Chris was still in the band
I honestly don't get this "Pennie was the essence of DEP"-talk. I mean sure the guy is a machine, but there's a lot of videos and recorded music to portray his followers skills and to me it just seems that the sticks are in good hands. And besides - do you listen DEP becouse of the drummer, or becouse of the music? To me it's the music. How about waiting the new album to come out first?
..or maybe chris just wants to do CoCa? I personally like both bands, and playing both simple and complicated stuff. And well - For now I can really say that Sharone made me very convinced. Things don't look too grim.
i feel as if the pure essence of dillinger comes from this guy, the rhythm changes he comes up with are amazing, not only do they sound great but they're hard to play, not the type of music a poser could have ass and get away with, each beat contributes to raw emotion felt in each song, man i hope this next album is something legendary, thats what they're making it out to be, i just want this type of music to go back in the dark and gain its respect and prestige it once had
Why? It's not the music's fault if it falls on thin ears. i do understand the whole passionate drummer thing, though. I heard the guy who replaced him also packs quite the punch, so.. you never know.
Perhaps when a poser gets tired of such skirmish, s/he can start some shit.
what does it for me is the way he uses shit that you would never think of using in this kind of music, and yet uses it so effectively you're just like DAMN. or something
this tune has got to be his finest hour(or 2 mins), dont know how someone can come up with these kinds of parts and arrange them so effectively, there's no chance of getting bored by endless technical crap
the begginin of this song is... it cant be played

He didn't record any drums for the new album, but he did write most of them. So I'm willing to bet he wrote that part, and Gil just recorded it.

If Coheed keeps using 4/4 much longer, I think they will find themselves without a drummer, and I think Chris will see that Dillinger was his mecha.
It's not often that drummers has such a power over the bands influences.
