only 8.39 the astra vxr can nail it in 8.35 hence why vauxhall released the vxr nurburg at only 835 ( the time it goes around the track ) i serpose its down to the driver really
3 of my friends own these things. i drive a stock 09 Rex and i havent been beaten yet by either of them. they are also all stock standard. at the dig i pull about 1.5-2 car lengths and they never recover. on boost rolling start we are neck to neck. they are definitely quick for a FWD turbo but no revelation.
i have roasted 7 scoobys in my mps now ...nobody realises what it is and laughs then i fly past them ...i have teddys in the back window to make it look like a mummys car too
I bought my wife one of these things this year. I hate little cars and drive a 2007 M3 but this thing is out of control fun. I sometimes take it out instead of the M3 when i want to go down the shops... shhhh dont tell her. LOL
'In all seriousness this little car amazed me and she always has a smile on her face. Thanks Mazda.
Solid car again, and powerful too but it's the same engine in the 3. I just like the fact that they have taken the engine from an AWD monster like the 6 and shoe horned it into the smaller and lighter FWD 3.
Nice video. Mazda 3 MPS is one respectable car. Was gonna get 1 but decided to stick to my roots and get another Subaru but the MPS also rocks my boat :)
Don't get me wrong I love the scoobies and Evos but I won't get a 4wd anymore. Too easy, too much grip. On the roads it means you are well within the cars limits even when thranging it around like a lunatic. Much more fun to have a rwd or even fwd and be on the ragged edge, makes it man and machine not just machine.
I can sort of relate to what you are saying. But to classify a AWD car as "too easy" to drive is simply incorrect. Try doing a corner above the cars capabilities and you will find yourself in some trouble to control it. Hence, there is no difference between an AWD and FWD/RWD when it comes down to being on the "edge". Push anything to the limit and you are bound to get the "edge" you are after.
Read my comment again... I don't think you understood what I meant... What cars have you owned? I'm 31 now and I can guarantee you I've probably owned more cars than your parents. Yes I change them like clothes but I know the difference between FWD, RWD and AWD....
I understood you. "Hence, there is no difference between an AWD and FWD/RWD when it comes down to being on the "edge". i do not think a FWD car has capabilities as close as that of RWR or AWD. so being on the 'edge' is easy to get to, but it won't be to the same level as a RW or AW. especially FWD cars that have higher power outputs.
Doesn't matter. Just push whatever you drive to the limit and you get the edge. And trust me, people that think AWD is the easiest to drive is just wrong. Once they loose traction you're a gonner. Not enough rear wheel bias to power you out of a corner without sliding sideways if you decide to push the "easy to drive" AWD to the limit. Gutter, tree or power post will be the last thing you will remember.
You need to find the videos where they compare the Mazdaspeed 3 and the WRX STI. They are almost identical in comparison. With the Mazda coming out on top in almost every category.
what cars have i owned? why? what has that got to do with what im saying? you might own a GT3RS for all i know, yet I could possibly beat you to the corner store in a suzuki swift. we're talking theory here after all, covering it with the ego of our 'experience'. i guarantee you noone on this board is a schumakker! :)
Well what I meant by my comment with the difference between open and closed track is that when the cobalt driver had a closed track, he did not have to worry about other drivers and more importantly slow down for anyone on the track he might have had to wait a few turns to pass, with the speed3 being timed on opened track and at a track as long as nubur im sure he was affected by other cars on the track
Funnily enough we also had a closed track at the end of the day to get a lap in but the closed track took longer as the driver was nervous after being told that kids with skateboards often go on to it after hours and there was no way of knowing if they would be around the next corner.
the cobalt is lighter, the 08 has 55 more hp then the previous cobalt, and the most important thing is that the cobalt was tested on a closed track, wheras the speed3 was on an open track
no only that, when the MS3 got timed on the Nurburgring, it was with a driver new to the track and new to the car. I bet the cobalt driver probably has a driver that knew the car and the track. Honestly, I could see the MS3 running in the 8:20s if you put it on a closed course with a somewhat experienced driver.
Hmmm lets see RWD mid engine car vs FWD front engine car hmmmm..... last time i checked the BEST handling cars in the world were rear wheel drive mid engine cars. To be honest with ya it isn't fair to compare the 2 cars since they are 2 different classes and just because the mr2 has been out of production doesent mean that the car was a POS.
I honestly don't mean any offense by this but I happen to have an mr2 mk3 amongst my cars. I hate the mr2, they are sh*t. Check the 0-60 times, the mps whoops it (7.7 secs for the mr2 but 5.9 for the mazda. Plus they are different types of cars, the mr2 is a 2 seater rwd convertable with no bootspace that looks incredibly camp with great big blushing eye headlights. If we were talking about the mx5 then there would be a comparison (but to be fair not favourably to toyota).
Iam not a fan of the mk3 but i have also been in a mazda 3 and have seen mazdaspeed 3 perform and I will give it its props and personally it being a 16 year old vehicle I dont think its bad at all and a 16 year old car can still nearly keep up with it on top of that the MK2 3sgte engine can SAFELY handle up to 400+ horsepower leaving the engine plenty of room to improve.
Yeah, but the best acceleration time of the 2008 Cobalt SS Turbo model is 5.7. There is a guy on YouTube that got the time of the MS3 at 5.5 seconds at 0-60. To an average driver, that really doesn't seem like a difference at all, but I'm just saying. Besides, I bet the 2008 turbo Cobalt will be 26k+ atleast.
The cobalt sucks, no fun to drive and most uncomfortable seats ever. Mazdaspeed 3 is phenomenal, the turbo lag is so much fun, get new tires if your gonna drive it in the snow though.
Turbo lag was fun? Many car makers try to make anti-turbo lag... Subaru has made one on their concept model... They say anti-turbo lag was dangerous, it could heats up the engine so fast.
the mazdaspeed 3 makes more power than its competitors with the same size engine by uping the boost to 15.5 psi, its slow until the turbo kicks in around 3100rpm, gotta keep it between 3100-5500 in order for it to be a fast car.
Watch that video. The new T/C Cobalt SS is going to kick ass in its car class. Yes the previous Cobalts suck, but not this new one coming out. And you haven't answered me on the "turbo lag is so much fun", thing. Judging from that comment, you really don't know what you're talking about.
yeah, that cobalt is going to be fast, but i doubt it will be faster than the MS3, take it that the test cobalt ss ran in the 8:20s on the nurburgring, and the ms3 ran in the8:30s, the cobalt driver knew the car very well and also knew the track very well, where the ms3 driver here was newto the track and new to the car.
...(continued) I know you're not supposed to dial on the power before the apex but it's nice to have the control, rather than feel like the car's computer has the control, and also it's annoying when I haven't pushed the throttle any further while in a corner, but the car starts accelerating (sometimes quite violently, for passengers anyway!) after the apex as I straighten the wheel.
The ECU is hard coded and limits torque according to speed, throttle setting, and steering angle in first and second gears to reduce torque steer and it's related inevitable screw ups. I don't think you can get around it without a box that fakes the sensor data to the ECU.
I always felt that without this active engine torque managenent, you could pontentionaly get a faster launch and thus 0-60 times. Hopefully someone will make a module.
I'd be interested to know if you altered the torque limiting system on corners (not sure what Mazda's technical term for this is), because I've noticed with my 3 MPS when driving hard around corners it won't give me all the power I've dialled up until I've gone past the apex and I'm turning out of the corner...
"Absolute heart in mouth" eh Mark? haah. Missed out the "get out the way" stuff involving the bikes early on though. How much faster would it have been without them? Amazing for a standard car though.
The Mazda 3 MPS goes really fucking hard for what it is.
I was lucky enough to drive it around Oran Park (sydney, australia), and i've gotta say, as good as the other cars were on the day, the mazda 3 MPS really gets the adrenaline pumping more than any of the other cars!
The videos from the day are uploaded to my youtube account, so check them out!
i just bought a Suzuki SX4. its peppy and fun to drive. but I still wish I got the Mazda 3. its just plain fun car all around. maybe I'll trade it in for one in the future. who knows what the next Mazda 3 will look like! :)
I know whatyou mean, the SX4 is a quality car but I think that the Mazda is not only a better all rounder but if you want balls out driving then there is no comparison.
Right on guys, I wouldn't be surprized if those stock tires started to get chunks ripped out of them with such hard driving. Were any temps a noticable problem? Be cool if mazda gave you an rx-8 as well, id be curious to know its times too. Congradz on the great time!
Funnily enough no chunks were taken out of the tyres that I know of but as you can hear they were used to their maximum potential. It was not me driving (maybe next time) however the guy who got the 8.39 (Mark) insisted that when driving this car that you should really try to lean on the tyres into the corners because even though you feel like you are driving on the ragged edge even at those speeds the car and tyres have a lot more in them.
Almost forgot to answer your Q. Temps of the car itself weren't an issue however the tyres were standard and therefore designed for road not racing use. Due to the heat generated by racing they wore much faster than you would normally expect on UK roads and it just makes me wonder what this vehicle could do if it were put on cut slicks and was derstricted (yep, the cars they were using were restricted to 155 mph). Quite irritating for me when I drove one back to the UK ;)
Yes, the tires are the definitely the weak link on this car in stock form. They are pretty good until they overheat, then they are greasy. No chunking, though. Stock brakes are very good.
Car was as you would buy it from a dealer, the reason the time was not quicker was due to flex from the tread. The spare tyres were there so the cars could be driven home after a day on the circuit.
Decent time for the type of car, wonder how legit that was though. I saw the wheels removed and that makes me wonder of brake pads were altered or better tires were installed.
The reason I have this video is because I was part of the team that went out there to test it on behalf of Mazda UK. The wheels came off because we did more than one run and needed to change the tires and brakes due to wear (as you would expect ragging any car around Nurburg). These vehicles were 100% standard in every way from the aerial on top right down to the manufacturer spec tyres - no alterations were made!

These vehicles were 100% standard in every way from the aerial on top right down to the manufacturer spec tyres - no alterations were made!
