:) When my former french catholic mom was told that she was going to go to hell by a priest for leaving the church she said "I can't go to hell. You have the keys".
I don't celebrate Christmas so this would blend in the background for me like a muted television commercial. UNLESS SOMEONE POINTED IT OUT WITH A DISPROPORTIONATELY LARGE SIGN.
In 2001 the US Census Board calculated that 902,000 Americans are Atheist but we cannot assume that they object to the nativity scene nor can we assume that the remaining 28,789,000 non religious Americans do either.
We can assume that the 167,246,000 religious people would object to a "Religion is but a myth...".
Current numbers put that the amount of agnostic and atheistic people in the US at around 11% of the population, so about 3.3 million. (Wikipedia puts it at 16%)
To put that into perspective:
# Jewish (1.7%)
# Buddhist (0.7%)
# Muslim (0.6%)
If Christmas blends for you, you have a higher tolerance for pain than I. For me, it's hard not to notice it when you turn on the television, go into a store, a restaurant, interact with people .. most of whom are talking about the holidays.
BTW, I used to work in retail... Yeah... So I had to pretty much train myself to keep busy and not notice the incredibly repetitive music. Just like a framer tries to ignore the wonderful smells he has to deal with. :)
Most of my friends and family don't celebrate it so that helped. When I got home it was an escape.
I now mostly spend my time just watching DVDs and listening to music at this time, just to avoid it all.
If you're having to go out of your way to avoid it, then you're not really avoiding it, are you?
Some people joke about starting anti-christmas, or something similar, as a way to get around christmas. But then they're just celebrating something in reaction to Christmas, which is nearly as bad.
We should be able to, if we don't want to celebrate it, simply not be bothered by it. It shouldn't be something we have to work to ignore, I don't think.
Well, it isn't in my life at home until I happen to turn on the television, or turn on the radio or look at my mail during the season.
I also dislike rap and whiny nasal pop but that's on the radio, Much Music and Musique Plus all year round.
In regards to the nativity scene, it's like when they say Merry Christmas. It's a common cultural pleasantry like goodbye and "May the Force Be With You", not "the baby Jesus will boot your ass down to the fiery pit of Hades, the eternal sinner's BBQ".
"Religion is but a myth and superstition that harden hearts and enslaves minds" is much more explicit and inflammatory than the nativity scene though.
The nativity scene may not represent all religions but it represents several. And the sign not only attacks the religions the nativity scene represents but ALL of them.
They're simply trying to exaggerate the nativity scene as a discriminatory offense when that was not its purpose.
I think the point in part is that it's a casual attack, which in some ways makes it worse, because then they can hide behind a claim of "what? it's just a nativity scene!"
How many faiths does the Christian Nativity scene represent, incidentally?
As far as the nativity being innocuous, it may not be a sign literally saying "you're all suckers," but it's showing the birth of the guy who, if you don't kneel down before, will burn you in hell forever.
The nativity scene basically represents all Christian religions that subscribe to the idea that Christ had been born around this time of year.
The Roman Catholics had assigned the 25th the day of Christ's birth out of convenience because of their previous pagan holiday and calender but a few of the factions that broke off kept it anyway, some of which moved it around a bit - Santa was also pagan and adapted into Christianity, but then processed to be adopted by many of the RCC derivatives.
Seriously, is chrismas!who gives a damm about those who dont celebrate it even when they are living in a place where is widely celebrated. Just imagine this ... when you go to a hotel you dont protest the rules of it just because you dont follow them back home but because those are the beliefs to be rigt.We Should respect the belief of the vast majority rather than trying to be all fair. just let it be the way things had been for the last century or so. Thats the idea of democracy!
You dumb, ignorant, stupid, uneducated, staggeringly moronic idiot. Following the rules of a public business has NOTHING to do with government promoting religion and that's what happens when faith starts getting space in public facilities. Further, I'm not bound to respect your beliefs, ESPECIALLY when they are based on the ignorant ramblings of desert goat herders from the iron age. Lastly, if the idea of democracy was "status quo" as you say above, WE"D ALL BE BRITISH CITIZENS YOU STUPID FUCK!
Well.. You see i dont mind it even when i am mexican and live in canada.. i dont care about the islamic , jewish , indian or chinesse traditions that you see around here all year round because of tolerance. TOLERANCE is the key word of the whole idea of it. Yes i might i had sound a bit too catholic if you will but arent we allowed to have a simple representation for it? I dont know how you feel about other traditions/cultures but i do feel interested in others cultures rather than offended.
Lol great comment, you say you don't have to respect Christians beliefs YET you say that your non-belief belief must be respected by all, you are a complete hypocrite
I said no such thing, read my comment again after increasing your literacy skills.
aronedu,
I don't care what you mind and don't mind because, quite frankly, I have tried being tolerant of other people and their faith and the only thing I and other like me have received in return is prejudice and ridicule for not sharing the beliefs of others. Dogma and faith is intolerant and prejudiced by it's own definition. I will no longer extend to others what they refuse to extend to me.
frankly i agree with you. Being jewish I'm sick of hearing "holiday _______" and seeing only christmas related things. Just call it what it is. But that doesn't change the fact that one of the core ideals of the US is that there is suposed to be a seperation of church and state and that means that anything religious has NO place in or on the property of a government building.
