This isn't a love tribute. It's a tribute to the friendship they shared aboard the ARK. The story regarding Maria and Shadow is both a sweet and a sad one, and it really makes you feel for the characters.

The following question is for anyone who cares to answer:

Why is it that some people make such a big deal out of Sonic's relationship with Princess Elise in Sonic 2006, and yet no one seems bothered by Shadow's relationship with Maria? SHE was human and HE's a hedgehog, and yet no one calls Maria a "slut" or a "whore". And what about Molly from Sonic X? She and Shadow clearly had feelings for each other. How are they any different from Elise? I want answers, people!

But don't get me wrong--I like Amy as a CHARACTER. The "rowr" was just a little joke I threw in there.

Personality-wise, the Sonic the Comic version of Amy is a logical progression of the version featured in the games. As Amy grows older, she will eventually mature into a character similar to her comic book counterpart (although I find it unlikely that she'll give up her hammer in favor of a crossbow).

From the other responses I've gotten, the general opinion would seem to be that since Shadow and Maria never kissed on the lips, their relationship was merely a very close friendship, or at most a brother-sister kind of thing. It's hard to tell how close they were, since all we have to go on is flashbacks. The two could very well have kissed each other on the lips at some point and Shadow just forgot about it. (Cont'd)

As for Molly, I think she probably had a crush on Shadow. Shadow himself seemed to consider Molly a sort of surrogate Maria, so his feelings for Molly would have been the same as his feelings for Maria, whatever those were.

P.S. On the subject of Sonic and Elise: she may have been infatuated with him, but I don't think he considered her anything more than a good friend. He was just being nice to her, and she misinterpreted that. Sonic loves Amy and that's all there is to it..

hmmm... im going to be a freak of nature and put my two-pence in. i'd say that i am a SonAmy hater... but not so much that im going to be rude about it, especially since that was a kind word and not being rude in the least bit, i am a SonSal fan for the comics (and, heck, all the way through), but for the '06 game... id say i actually liked SonElise. probably 'cuz Elise was the closest thing to Sally that we ever got in the new games.

Well, to be honest, when I said I supported Sonamy I only meant in the context of the games, the Fleetway Comics and Sonic X. As far as the Archie Comics and SatAM are concerned, I definitely support Sonally. In fact, in most of my fanfiction Sonic is with Sally and TAILS is with Amy. (The reason I paired Sonic with Sally in my stories is because my first experience of Sonic was through SatAM and Archie, so I'm used to Sonally.)

On the other hand, when it comes to Elise: she and Sally are both princesses, and there the resemblance ceases. They don't look remotely similar (being of two different species), and personality-wise they're completely different.

on that note, id have to contradict. they both are princesses, they both have short red hair, they both have blue eyes, they have both been kidnapped, they have both "died" and been brought back, they have both "lost" Sonic, they have both kissed Sonic, but, of course, there are differnces... Sally broke up with sonic to fufil her duties, Elise tried to get with Sonic to get rid of hers. there are more differences, but i feel no need to go into them. you know the differences VERY well.
