Use a tuner (Fzone FT-009) clip on, set to "BASS", if it does not extend to five string switch the tuner to "Chromo", chromatic scale and it will then identify the low B string.
What about using harmonics? Once you have one string done you can tune all the others using the 5th and 7th string natural harmonics. I takes some time to get used to it but it works quite well IMO.

I prefer tuning my 5-string bass to the "high C" tuning, but I think I currently have "low B" strings and I think I kinda like it with them tuned to "high C" though. Does anyone know if tuning the strings to a different tension than they're meant for will screw up my neck or anything?
@nwj55 There's no way you could switch from BEADG ("Low-B") up to EADGC ("High-C") without snapping all your strings - an entire string's 5 steps is much too far to tune. Could you be thinking of "C-Standard" (CFBEbAb) which is just tuning up one step from a standard B-tuned 5-string? (A good deal of Modern Metal bands use this tuning, Dethklok being a great example). The typical "High-C" tuning is not using the low-B and replacing that with a C ABOVE the G on a 4-string, and there aren't...
@nwj55 ...many string sets made for that which come to mind: most people will buy a 6-string set and save the Low-B if they have a BEADG-tuned bass, or buy a standard EADG set and a single High-C string to make up the complete set. There's only a small difference in tension between Low-B & High-C (the latter needing more to be tuned higher) and would need a minimal adjustment if any - the biggest change would be the nut, that would need replacing between the two tunings. Hope this helps!
If someone watching this actually needs the subtitles they obviously don't need the english translation of english or they are hearing impaired and wouldn't be playing bass in the first place.
The subtitles would be helpful if the viewer speaks English as a second language and wants to see the dialog written out so it's easier to understand. Or, they can be translated into the viewer's first language.
@Fischer667 Hey have you ever heard if a high C setup? wow you people are super critical even though this kid really has NO clue what he is talking about. if you want to use a tuner get the harmonic on the fifth fret and tune each string there it will be more accurate btw
@mastertung7 lmao, you didnt get that? its simple, learn how to tune a 4 string, then youll understand how to tune a 5 string. he wasnt going step by step, but more like giving you tips.
@coldpizzarules lol i know right////lol" so the guy asks, hey do you know the difference between a 4 and a 5 string bass? guy answers......1 string' lol
Oh!!! I've never played a 5 string before. I erroneously thought the 1st string to be a C addition. The additional string is actually above the low E, and tuned to B. Wow, I feel like a real dufus.
I just now got a 5-string bass from my friend, but how do I know which setup it uses (BEADG or EADGC)? Or does it not matter and I can tune the strings how I want?
Thats what I would do too. You can play both the notes and get to the headstock easily without holding a fret down by doing 5ths. I have an Ibanez bass, and they are really easy to do harmonics on, so If I was stuck without a tuner I would do that.
on a 5-stringed bass where the tuning is BEADG, does it still sounds OK if i tuned the B to A or it sounds like fart?

How to tune a 5 string bass?
Let me guess, you tune the four strings as per usual, then you tune the 5th string to B.

Anyone can recommend me a home practice amp? My Peavey Minx 110 doesn't do the B string off my Ibanez SRX705 well.
It doesn't give the "grrr" sound of a string at all ...
adamcrookedsmile 2 years ago
Ive got a peavey max 158, sounds good with my 5 string; plus it's not huge and fairly cheap I payed £70 (about $120) and it's served me well.

I ended up with a Laney RB3 bass amp, it's got a 12" speaker and a built-in simple compressor.
It's everything I could have wished for at the size and price.
