The actual jobs created under this bill is optimistically 1.3 million (BHO promised 4 mil.) costing over 360K per job last time i heard the numbers crunched.
This bill is a trojan horse for socialized medicine, amesty for illeagals and more lib crap.
In January 27 prepared testimony before the House Budget Committee, CBO director Douglas W. Elmendorf stated, "In CBO's judgment, H.R. 1 would provide a substantial boost to economic activity over the next several years relative to what would occur without any legislation."

Obama mentioned that in the press conference. Did you listen? His goal is to halt the downward spiral by introducing a short term boost to aggregate demand. After that is achieved, then focusing on long term growth should be the goal.
In other words, the stimulus package is primarily designed for short term economic activity, so making the criticism that it doesn't help long term growth enough is baseless.
That's exactly the misconception I'm trying to eliminate here. The report by the CBO was overall in favor of the stimulus package. Some columnists and pundits took the part of the report that said that long term growth would be hampered by 0.1% to 0.3%, but missed the bottom line: that short term relief is both desirable and achieved by the spending bill.
Focusing only on the long run is (ironically) myopic. We're all dead in the long run anyway.

1) The CBO predicted a very minor decrease in long term *growth* in GDP of 0.1% to 0.3%. We would still be moving forward not back, so I don't see how you can claim that's putting a burden on our children.
2) You may be personally willing to go without healthcare, face eviction, subsist on food stamps, not be able to provide for your children now, etc. in order to for you and your children to be much better off in a decade. But I don't think many other people feel the same, and I don't think you have the right to make that decision for them.
For me, I'd rather experience modest but consistent growth than wild swings from economic booms to busts, even if those booms are really high.

The government can take 800 Billion bucks and give it directly to 800,000 American people and pay them 50K a year to do nothing for the next 20 years and it would be more productive than the crap they are pulling.

Remember with building projects - it creates stimulus not just with the jobs but also the things needed - lumber, concrete etc to build those infra-structure projects. How many jobs will this stimulus bill produce? There is no guarantee it will employ 800,000 people.
You could take that money and give it to the private sector to hire 1.6M people by giving those companies 25K/year per person hired on for 20 years! Then that company can pay only minimum wage on top of that and provide a decent check.

They are usually local companys that do the building except in the case of rural areas where the companys are in the next city.
There are city, state, and federal inspectors for contruction and those are government jobs but they are a small fraction of the enormous number of private sector jobs that will be created.
90% of the jobs created with this bill will be in the private sector.
You have no idea what you're talking about. The government contracts out a huge amount of work to the private sector. Example: Federal Highways are paid for and maintained by the federal government, but the construction workers aren't government employees. They are employees of a private company that won a government contract.

Obama's answer for why taking so long to comment on AIG is not acceptable. " needed more information." The AIG bonus have been know by his admin. for sometime now. He sign the approval of it. If he signed something he did not know about, it was his mistake.
It appears to me that Obama did not comment on it because he didn't think he would need to. But once the public got upset he had no choice. I find that disappointing. If he really cared he would have gotten upset from the beginning

Obama, is right that we need better education, and that we need to invest in the future of this country. But that is simple to say. The cash needs to come from somewhere...Or is he going to just keep on printing it and let the next generation deal with it? He needs to make more drastic and harder decisions if he wants this to work. I am afraid he is thinking more about politics then the good of this country.. Please, let us not just believe his words. Obama gave reasons for why he is spending so much money, and they are for good things.But, money does not grow on trees. He will be spending a lot more money then the country will get back. He said he would not pass the debt to the next generation, but he is doing that. He lied to us. I think he is thinking short-term so he can get re-elected; this is wrong. We need a solution now for the long-term goal. He can not just spend and forget about the consequences of spending so much.

There are going to be recessions. But Bush assured us that tax cuts would make everything OK and there are still people saying that now, even though the last 8 years of tax cuts have been a disaster. The tax cuts per se are not the problem. The problem was the lack of a balanced budget and the illusion that you didn't have to balance the budget, that tax cuts by themselves would balance the budget. That insanity got us where we are today.

The president doesn't write the laws. He approves them. If there is bad legislation on the books, blame Congress and the president who signed it in (unless he was overriden).

Not all 5 million jobs would be in construction. Look at the actual plan and the proposed areas of spending. Other industries that are targeted are education, health, financial, mining, retail trade, information, among others. Don't make assertions you can't back up.

For those of you not following the news, the non-partisian congressional budget office said Friday that this bill would increase inflation, shrink the private sector, deepen and lengthen the recession and eventually cause a net job loss.
The actual jobs created under this bill is optimistically 1.3 million (BHO promised 4 mil.) costing over 360K per job last time i heard the numbers crunched.
This bill is a trojan horse for socialized medicine, amesty for illeagals and more lib crap.

Obama mentioned that in the press conference. Did you listen? His goal is to halt the downward spiral by introducing a short term boost to aggregate demand. After that is achieved, then focusing on long term growth should be the goal.
In other words, the stimulus package is primarily designed for short term economic activity, so making the criticism that it doesn't help long term growth enough is baseless.

That's exactly the misconception I'm trying to eliminate here. The report by the CBO was overall in favor of the stimulus package. Some columnists and pundits took the part of the report that said that long term growth would be hampered by 0.1% to 0.3%, but missed the bottom line: that short term relief is both desirable and achieved by the spending bill.
Focusing only on the long run is (ironically) myopic. We're all dead in the long run anyway.

That's the point. Our goal is to "promote the general welfare," which often coincides with increasing GDP, but not always.

1) The CBO predicted a very minor decrease in long term *growth* in GDP of 0.1% to 0.3%. We would still be moving forward not back, so I don't see how you can claim that's putting a burden on our children.

2) You may be personally willing to go without healthcare, face eviction, subsist on food stamps, not be able to provide for your children now, etc. in order to for you and your children to be much better off in a decade. But I don't think many other people feel the same, and I don't think you have the right to make that decision for them.
For me, I'd rather experience modest but consistent growth than wild swings from economic booms to busts, even if those booms are really high.

Funny, the right-wingers did not complain as much when Bush originally signed and agreed to 350 Billion TARP1 and TARP2 to bailout AIG, Fanny, Freddie, Chase, etc. And they do not complain about the Billions we spend for Iraq, Afghanistan or Isreal. But when Obama tries to pass a bill that helps our own people, they complain that it is wasteful liberal spending. They argue we need the $ for Iraq to keep us safe. But, a stable economy is critical to our national security also.

Oh, I don't kow randyparmd, it seemed to me there were plenty of GOP upset when Bush2 signed the TARP last fall - but definitely not upset as you say when it came to going to war - especially in Iraq. Iraq was never a real risk - we made it a risk by being a lightning rod for terrorists coming over from Iran and fanning the flames.

Yes, but it doesn't create any jobs. Sure, it helps those people, GeneralDevestation, but we have a lot more than 800k people who need help. Remember with building projects - it creates stimulus not just with the jobs but also the things needed - lumber, concrete etc to build those infra-structure projects. And that keeps people working indirectly - which is a double whammy stimulus.

You could take that money and give it to the private sector to hire 1.6M people by giving those companies 25K/year per person hired on for 20 years! Then that company can pay only minimum wage on top of that and provide a decent check.

That's a good question. That seems like something that qualified economists should try to answer. Oh wait, they have, and you just don't like what they said:
"CBO estimates that the legislation would raise employment by 0.9 million to 2.5 million at the end of 2009; 1.3 million to 3.9 million at the end of 2010; and 0.6 million to 1.9 million at the end of 2011."
That adds up to 2.8 to 8.3 million jobs over 3 years.

You know the one. it creates a database (which will give bureaucrats access to our most private records), and a Fed. Health "Care" Board which will dictate the treatments your doctor will be allowed to give you based on cost rather than effectiveness.
The rationing will apply to all of us, but it is mostly aimed at the elderly, who the socialized medicine proponents believe need to die sooner for the good of the collective.

He is pathetic. Now we find out that he has handpicked all the questions that were asked. Under Bush everyone would have complained, but under Obama it is somehow different? Obama has failed to simply answer the questions we want to hear because he refuses to allow those questions to be asked. That is not the actions of a president, but a politician. A total tax break of $13 per week is this great plan? Infrastructure accounts for less than 5% of this bill = pathetic.

Hawkins is absolutely correct.
There is no federal highway building company.
They are usually local companys that do the building except in the case of rural areas where the companys are in the next city.
There are city, state, and federal inspectors for contruction and those are government jobs but they are a small fraction of the enormous number of private sector jobs that will be created.
90% of the jobs created with this bill will be in the private sector.

You have no idea what you're talking about. The government contracts out a huge amount of work to the private sector. Example: Federal Highways are paid for and maintained by the federal government, but the construction workers aren't government employees. They are employees of a private company that won a government contract.
