Update... I conquered my old foe! Last night, I went out to the open mic at the Revue here in Fresno, and armed with my black 5 string Peavey DynaBass bass guitar as my lance, I slayed this beast! Considering it was just me up there on stage, without a drummer to lock in with and help me keep in time, I did really well! I was so worried about the second verse, I neglect to practice the "oh's" in the bridge, and almost lost ti there. But Booyah! I did it! Might do it again tonight!
Andy Summers is one of the most underrated guitar players of rock n roll. The greatest Minimalist guitar player in my opinion. He plays nothing more or less than what is exactly needed for a particular phrase. If he needs to play fill in with a lot of notes, he does it. If the phrase calls for long, bended notes, he does it, and perfectly. The Police sound like there are a lot more instruments than a 3-piece band, and Andy is responsible for that. Synthesizer, horns? No, that's Andy on guitar.
Life in fast-forward (at 2:32). The other day, I heard this young cat say, "Maybe God should clobber the earth with a fastball from outer space, and wipe out humanity, and then give it all back to the Thunder Lizards -- they didn't screw each over for a percentage." Frustration -- people -- frustration. "Yeah,'" I told him, "'life used to hold much promise -- much optimism. That was pretty much how life was in the early 1960s."
Where in hell did most of the money go that was slated for Haiti (following the earthquake of Jan. 12, 2010)? Talk about "too many cameras and not enough food" (or shelter, or medicine, et al). Where is the UN in situation such as that?
God, I love that guitar solo! It still gets to me after all these years. I read that Summers was going for a John Coltrane feel, as he did in "Peanuts".
the entire reason why i had to play drums these traccks are the shit. grew up houston 83 ibeg my bro ty to get him to take me but mom wasnt haven no part its cool thouhg my dad was hip and had thoses tracks on his trusty akai reel to reel. afterwards time to ride my pkripper those were the days
I wish they would do a version where Copeland swings behind the beat just a little bit harder--it would make it even more compelling. Too bad most folks have no idea what I'm talking about. Any takers? (Not just for Jazz enthusiasts, either)
I'm a bass player, and just as a bassist, Sting gets great respect within the bass community. He is deceptively good. Yes, the bass line is pretty repetitive...But that is not the whole of it. Try playing this line and singing the lyrics at the same time... Nightmarish!!!!! It is DAMNED Hard not to trip up on the bass line while sing these disjointed lyrics. So many of his songs are like that!
PS. I'm doing a Police Tribute band, and this is one of my greatest challenges!
@sonicfrogdotnet I'm a bass Player and have been playing since 82. Sting was one of many bassists I tried to emulate. Like you, I have always marveled at his ability to play and sing at once. But what I've really admired was his vintage fender 1953 precision bass original. Since then fender has reissued that same model. I'll have to look into getting one in due time.
@MrMallymal68 As yet another bassist, the guys that heavily influenced me were the likes of Geddy Lee, Sting, Paul McCartney, Cliff Burton, Steve DiGeorgio, John Entwistle, and John Paul Jones.
@sonicfrogdotnet As a fellow bassist, I agree with this entirely. I played for years in a technical death metal band that held heavy jazz and classical influence to our hyper speed riffs. I grew up with the drummer in that band, and we played in a jazz band on the side. The lead guitarist in the band was classically trained. The Police was one of the bands we'd listen to a lot before writing sessions, because all three members are just incredible. Extremely inspirational.
@jacksonbiscuit I don't think he does on the record, but I know there is some live vid out there of him playing various songs on fretless.... It's just not nice that he does that! :-)
@sonicfrogdotnet It isn't nice! To be honest, I never really gave the Police much thought, until now. Half the songs on this album are REALLY good, very glad I checked them out!
these dudes can really go!!! Stewart absolutely kills the drums on every track i've ever heard from the Police, Andy Sommers is an animal on guitar....and Sting's vocals are a perfect fit for every song....not to mention his funky bass playin! this my folks is what you call a complete band! wish they hada played them more on the R&B stations when i was growing up. Music is the universal language because it's color blind. good music is good music regardless of race, color or anything else!
I remember listening to The Police as a kid, now I am jaming to them as an adult, They were and still are a great unmatched band, They don't have a bad song.

often overlooked in this gem is Andy's solo which is very cool and a bit too short.
