Dios mio! Que belleza de hombre!! That's a real man...not the pussified males of today that shave all of their bodies to look like a metrosexual whore.
is it possible to get the entire movie uploaded? im a huge baseball fan and a big fan of japanese culture and i remember seeing this movie once a long time ago =)
I liked this movie, the actress that played Hiroko was really good. I have not seen her in anything else. Supposedly she had a hard time finding roles after this movie. Something with the Japanese culture
I found that to be one of the most interesting things about this study. The Japanese (largely) seem to embrace films like Black Rain, and perpetuate the stereotypes portrayed by Hollywood. I am hoping to do a similar study with Hollywood and China, but will take the research further and also analyze the portrayal of America in Chinese cinema.
Also, If this is about the relationship between hollywood and Japan, the depliction of the East from in American cinema is not only accepted, but perpetuated by Japan's own utilization of their Soft Power. As demonstrated by their involvement and deplictions in many of their video games and gender studies. As cited in as Miyako Inoue: Vicarious Language Kowaichi Iwabuchi, and Feeling Asian Modernities: Transnational Consumption of Japanese TV Dramas to name a few.
Yes, that is a fascinating portrayal of the Japanese. I decided not to use it because most of the film was made during the war, and I was trying to focus on purely post-war representations. Have you seen "The Purple Heart"? That's another classic!
Yep. On another note, many of the movies you've selected reflect a pre-1995 relations between japan and the US. I chose 1995 because it represents many changes between their relations. IE the clinton Hashimoto Summit, and increased Japanes involvement in US militaristic affairs. A combination of the second wave of propaganda promoting US goods in the 80's, which reflects the "cunning" japanese has diminished significantly since then.
I'm guessing this Youtube channel's clips were posted either by a self-important community college professor teaching an Asian studies class, or an Angry Asian Dude who thinks Hollywood demonizes Asian people.
This was actually a pretty good movie. It treated Japanese people far more respectfully than the "look at these freaks!" attitude of Lost in Translation, for example. I think Ms. Hiroko is actually a pretty sly one who subtly manipulates 'ol Jack. Stereotype subverted!
Your first assessment of me is closer to the mark, kyletherealninja. This page was established to supplement my master's thesis with clips from the films that I analyzed. My thesis explored Hollywood's mercurial portrayal of the Japanese.
Thank you for your comments but I must disagree. Portraying Hiroko as "sly" fits right in with the common stereotype that all Japanese are crafty and untrustworthy. That is not to say that Hollywood is evil, but that we continue to accept the stereotypes.
I just watched this movie for the first time yesterday...I like the movie for its' redemptive aspects (people learning to improve relational skills, etc.)...as a guy, my heart can melt over women like this - she has a sweet, gentle way about her (I'm a born-again Christian, and her manner reminds me of the "gentle and quiet" qualities mentioned in 1 Peter 3:4)...I know God can help me find a woman with similar sweet qualities...

Thank you for your comment selty. Yes, the sterotypes are rather blatant, but not as bad as some of the other films made about Japan at that time.

I have read this film has terrible Japanese stereotypes and the Japanese didn't want it

I second that notion. A few people have told me it's extremely accurate with its depiction of Japanese baseball.

It's too bad the actress playing Jack's love interest here only played in this movie. Love her looks & her accent.

Watch the whole movie and then come back to me thinking the same way. The chick is manipulative and selfish. But so is the Tom Selick character
