It makes me want to puke that people think music is so important that making money off of it is offensive. Especially these pretentious "artists". Its just a song. While it may have a profound affect on some people its just a song and what others do with it that shouldn't affect you. Now that they did a version of this song more people know who Daniel Johnston is.
The cover your talking about is found on the album Noise Floor, which contains rarities that aren't found on Bright Eyes' full length albums, like songs from EPs or compilations. I think if they were doing if for money it wouldn't be a rarity
Plus, in the lyric booklet for Noise Floor, it says "This Daniel Johnston cover was recorded for the Discovered Covered compilation... I relate to this song a great deal and it felt wonderful to sing." You might not like the band, but they're not sellouts.
It's not the band's fault if their fans don't realize it's a cover. I myself think most Bright Eyes fans are stupid.
But I love this song and what Conor did with it, and if it weren't for Bright Eyes then I wouldn't know who Daniel Johnston was. So I'm pretty glad they did the cover.
Also did anyone see some people had done about 300 postcards with drawings about daniel johnston eating madeline mcann? Was pretty weird but must admit i laughed a lot. He didn't really eat her did he? It would explain a lot...
Yeah, they were kind of similar, he basically played the same songs each time, but he didn't play organ first time, and he didn't do Devil Town second time. Third set was the best!!
good song, i feel bad how he shakes that much....

Look up a CD titled The Late Great Daniel Johnston - Discovered Cover.
They covered it in tribute to him.

well...
for one, I never claimed to be an "artist".
that was you putting words in my mouth...
you type in Bright Eyes Devil Town, here on
YouTube, and see how many of them actually say "Daniel Johnston cover"
even with the song on a tribute CD, people ignore the fact that it was a cover, attributing it to the proper artist...
now tell me that wouldn't piss you off...
the term "commercialism" was for laughs...
but the cover was terrible

If Britney Spears did a version then you could cry about commercialism.

This fact could be true, I'm on anti-psychotics and anti-depressants and they do make you shake like nothing else.
I wish I'd been at this, ATP is the best festival around. Ten Years of ATP was perfect, sadly Daniel didn't play it.

Didn't he do 3 sets and a guest appearance with yo la tengo? I heard a rumour he also did late night raids on pizza hut and burger king?

I must have been a few metres to the left. How did you meet him? Incidentally were the other sets he played identical to this or different?
