I also loved the way the soaps did flashback scenes back then. The character SLOWLY starts to think back, and the 2 scenes SLOWLY merge together in a blur, with the flashback scene always having this halo of colors floating around it. Today's flashbacks have this horrible swoosh sound, and the flashback scene is as bright and clear as the scene with the person remembering.... The production values daytime has lost over the years is staggering.
That period of time was often called, "The Golden Age of AW" and damn it that isn't the truth. This was masterful storytelling at it's most absolute finest. The thing that make it so brilliant was this was ultimately a story about two strong and powerful woman - one good the other bad - fighting for the soul of one man (Mac). That fight scene - written, acted, the music and the superb direction and editing, makes it one of the greatest moments in soap opera history. Simply awesome!!
One of the most memorable TV moments of my childhood. The cliffhanger of who got stabbed...Rachel or Janice...haunted me for years. I was 8 years old. It's amazing how many of those intense moments stayed with me. I loved Another World! Would be so happy to see more clips from the Golden Era of the 1970s.
Here in Pennsylvania, AW ran from 2:30pm to 4pm during the 90 min era. I believe it moved to 2-3pm when Texas premiered in Aug 1980. Texas ran 3-4pm here on the East Coast.
@BruTube Ok. This would explain why I have a subtle memory of this storyline. My mom had the tv on watching this and I can remember asking her questions about what was going on and actually getting into it. I distinctly remember Mac being kidnapped and poisoned and the island location. I must have caught the part from about 3:15 to 4 pm since we arrived home from school just a few min's after three. I can't believe I even remember this at all!
On East coast time, did Another World air at 3pm? The reason I ask, I vaguely remember , getting home from school, and my mom was glued to the tv screen and I can't believe it but I think this is what she was watching......It had to be around this time because this was a couple of years b4 my mom and dad divorced in 1982
@SoapsGoldenAge ...i can believe that considering it was the days when the majority of us did not have VCR's in our homes...if you missed something big especially on a soap you missed it for good..and yes i also remember this storyline as a kid thanks to my Mom who was a fan of the show back then
Janice simply wanted to get all of Mac's millions and chose to slowly kill him with poison.(She got the idea from one of the novel''s that Mac's company published called Harry Must Die.)If the show wasn't on for 90 minutes at this point, this would have made the show almost #1 for a few weeks.
oh my GOd i've been DYING to see these scenes for years! my mom loved rachel and mitch, esp. mitch! lol. thanks for posting these! is the scene here where she sleeps w/mitch?
Pamela Buchanan just stabbed Mitch Blake! LOL This talented actress went on to play one of the many Mrs. Asa Buchanans on OLTL! And she was great on there, too!
She also was a surprise addition to the crowd at the watch party for the finale ep of AW held at a popular (and soap-friendly) sports bar on NYC's Upper West Side.
The amnesia from all those soap storylines over the years must have gotten contagious!! :D Just think what most soaps would be like now IF ONLY capable writers were around....
That's what I have always wondered about that scene...I wonder if Janice had some sort of secret reason for wanting Mac out of the way (she wanted Rachel).
Belated thanks for sharing this on You Tube. It is too bad the AOL episodes did not cover the St. Croix storyline, but at least they picked up at the trial of Mitch's supposed death.
Watching this clip makes the 25th anniversary clips of Janice, Steve and Rachel even more striking. If only AW had kept using its rich history over the years.

@SoapsGoldenAge - Yeah, this was a fantastic storyline. I liked any storyline with Mitch in it. I had such a crush on William Grey Espy back then. =)

Is this a soap opera? Cool video

When Janice was stabbed, wouldn't she bleed into the pool? Unless Rachel stabbed her in a hidden place.
