@neelburt The physical size of Israel is not an issue. Britain is tiny but it once controlled the world. The issue is the constant violation by Israel of international law. From what you wrote, I take it that it is your opinion that Israel should comply with international law if - and only if - the states surrounding it do something to protect their "brothers and sisters"?
Hamas was freely elected.
It is the duty of all states to uphold international law because it is the right thing to do.

There is no choice to be made if you do not believe that Israel's existence and right to self defense is unjust. You seem to focus on a very minute point in @rothschildofericas remarks, such as the expulsion of Jews from Europe during the Holocaust, but you have conveniently ignored her point about the lack of aid from other Arab countries, and the fact that Palestinians were expelled from the plethora of surrounding Arab countries.

Are you going to continue to passively accept injustice - no point in spelling out why Israeli apartheid is injust, if you can't figure it out on your own - or are you going to make the hard choice, and align yourself with the struggle against Israeli apartheid - which, sorry to break it to ya, doesn't get 3 billion dollars of military aid a year. The question is essentially, how will you be remembered? As someone who renounced their privilege to stand against injustice? Or as another Eichmann?

Now, unlike the Palestinians, they didn't have multiple Arab countries they could turn to for citizenship, housing or even help. Its a shame all the Arab countries HATE the Palestinian people and have done nothing to help them out & only further exacerbate their sufferings.

I think neelburt's last point is particularly important- Jews have been getting kicked our of their homes since 722 BCE. This has occurred in almost every generation- most known are the expulsion from Spain in the 1492 and virtually all of Europe during WWII, specifically 1941 and onwards. The only reason the Jews needed a state was because in every place they have ever lived they have been discriminated against, harassed, killed, or expelled.

I'm very curious to know out of those 50 or so protesters, only a handful of whom were visibly Muslim, how many have actually been to Israel/Palestine and witnessed what is happening, or simply protest other University's events because they believe what an aggressive, manipulative group on their campus tells them.

If for nothing else, have a dialog to educate others as to what is going on, but you all seem so afraid to talk about things. Because as college students in the tiny town of Amherst, it saddens me to think that your probably private school education funded by your parents is not teaching you how to interact with people who may disagree with something you've learned.

The truth of the matter is, we are all Americans currently living in America and most of us are going to college. So unless you are planning on going to Israel/Palestine to physically help the people in need, learn about whats going on, or become a victim of this terror as you choose to call it, you are thousands of miles away on a campus or in a town with other people who may have a different side of whats going on to share with you.

Their ignorance doesn't surprise me, and neither does their manipulation of words. After all, honestly knowing and presenting both sides of the story takes away from the false points they constantly try to make. The part that bothers me the most is their lack of respect. They claim to be peace loving people, but they are simply disrespectful and filled with hatred. They spend their time protesting, but never actually engaging in anything that involves inter-belief dialog or advancement.

That being said, Student Alliance for Israel is a student group comprised on many diverse opinions on Israel, and our only position as a unified group is that Israel has the right to exist and she has the right to defend herself. We hope this speaker will portray one perspective for all of our constituents to hear and further illustrate the complexity of the conflict.

ONE. Suggest that Kenny Sachs survived a "terror attack" INSIDE OF GAZA, thus reversing Sachs' role as aggressive occupier in Gaza into one of passive victim. Overlook the fact that an attack on a member of an occupying military power is entirely legitimate under the Geneva Conventions (which Israel and the US consistently violate anyways).
TWO. Call Kenny Sachs an "immigrant," thereby innocenting the colonial act of moving to Israel from the US in order to serve in the IDF.

This gives you the ability to defame an action which calls attention to the outrageous violations of the IDF (we were wearing the names of the 352 CHILDREN killed in Operation Cast Lead, in case you missed it) as childish, irrational, ignorant, mislead, without calling into question your own ethical position.

UMass SAFI takes pride being on a campus where diverse opinions coexist we can discuss controversial issues in a respectful manner. I love how the content of my speech was focused on working towards peace and that was all cut out just to show that a black and white perspective of "I think it's ok that the Palestinians have lost so much land". This is despite the fact that the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters estimates around 300,000 deaths in Darfur can be directly attributed to the ongoing genocide.
