"marijuana" is a wild Mexican tobacco plant and as speedy is Mexican the song is just talking about having no tobacco to smoke. "marijuana" has become only a slang term for cannabis and does not actually mean it was referring to cannabis.
@millersb Actually, the term "marijuana" was completely fabricated in a magazine around the turn of the century. The etymology of the word isn't well known, and it certainly has nothing to do with tobacco. The song "La Cucaracha" does in fact reference cannabis.

Just so yall know, Marijuana is sorta a slang that America came up with to label what is ACTUALLY Cannabis. It was all in focus to scaring Americans cause Cannabis was putting the Pharmaceutical Industry in trouble cause of its many contributions...
Not completely sure, but heard something like there is an actual plant(unrelated to Cannabis) that is called Marijuana...and I think its originally from Mexico.
It was all a scare so Conglomerates could keep profiting, basically.
I am spanish and this song when I was 8 was the first time that I heard it and I didn't give it any thought of what it ment then. The song does not promote marijuana it just states the fact that the roach was out of weed and wanted more.
Actually it is about weed. Back when this episode was aired marijuana was still legal and was often used in cigarettes when it became illegal the episode was removed. There are version of the song where the word marijuana is replaced (for obvious reasons) but still cucaracha (like roach) was slang for marijuana... but like i said wasnt illegal at the time. If you dont believe you can watch episodes "Mexican Boarders" and "Gonzales' Tamales" (which is this one) from Speedy.
Yup. But this one is though, that's what I was saying that's why i talked especifically about the episode. This is just one of the versions of the song that probably appearedduring the Revolution i think.
well a cucaracha is a cockroach.. nn its usually what people that smoke marajuana call the end of a marijuana cigarette.. a roach.. n in spanish the song says: the cockroach can no longer walk ( as in the cigarette run or burns down) becouse its missing, because its out of.. marijuana to smoke.. this is how the song goes. that song has ben arround for decades!

you know whats funny, alot of caucasians/white people. have alot of meth labs in california, and all throughout the u.s.a. hhmm, i wonder whats worse.... ROFLCOPTER!!
What i believe and it's probably the truth from all my research. They make speedy sing that version of te song because during the time the U.S were making marujuana illeagal, mexicans were being accused by the goverment were using references to marijuana being the reason why mexicans are crazy from all the marijuana they smoke and bring to the U.S.
This song was especially associated with Pancho Villa during the revolution. It was an anti government song...a satire..as mentioned above. I guess no one in Hollywood knew that marijuana meant THAT MaryJane! Ha! Or they did and thought they could sneak it in...which is probably the more likely scenario.
Cucaracha translates directly to cockroach but you have it backwards as the term "roach clip" derived from the La Cucaracha song not the other way around.
la cucaracha dates form the times of Mexican revolution (1910-1921)at the time it was a satirical song, and had more lyrics talking about goverment or famous revolutionaries, years later WB made Speedy Gonzales, and they just put the song just because it was the most fitting with the stereotype, I doubt they mind about the real meaning of the song.
marijuana actually was illegal at this time -_-

Before 1910, Marijuana was not forbidden in Mexico.
Hemp was used ti elaborate textiles, rope and other items. Campesinos used to smoke marijuana after working.
The USA established the prohibition of Marijuana in Mexico.
Marijuana now a days is legal in many U.S states like Hawaii, California, oregon, Washington, Alaska, Nevada or Maine...

What i believe and it's probably the truth from all my research. They make speedy sing that version of te song because during the time the U.S were making marujuana illeagal, mexicans were being accused by the goverment were using references to marijuana being the reason why mexicans are crazy from all the marijuana they smoke and bring to the U.S.

thats the original song

This song was especially associated with Pancho Villa during the revolution. It was an anti government song...a satire..as mentioned above. I guess no one in Hollywood knew that marijuana meant THAT MaryJane! Ha! Or they did and thought they could sneak it in...which is probably the more likely scenario.

the original song says:
La Cucaracha, la cucaracha,
ya no puede caminar,
porque no tiene, porque le falta
las dos patitas de atras
The roach, the roach
he already cannot walk
because he doesn´t have
his two rear legs

It was just a song dated from the revolutionary period... and it's exactly like bonnejenet said...
speedy gonzalez is not a dealer...he's just singing an old song...
and obviously if a roach is "high" it can't walk (or not too well at all).
saludos
viva mexico y sus tradiciones !!! :)

Cucaracha means cockroach in spanish, or roach, another mary jane connections. *LOL*
lordzaphodbeeb 4 years ago
Cucaracha translates directly to cockroach but you have it backwards as the term "roach clip" derived from the La Cucaracha song not the other way around.

la cucaracha dates form the times of Mexican revolution (1910-1921)at the time it was a satirical song, and had more lyrics talking about goverment or famous revolutionaries, years later WB made Speedy Gonzales, and they just put the song just because it was the most fitting with the stereotype, I doubt they mind about the real meaning of the song.
