actually, you're right, that what metallica does to get that wierd sound, they do it to in "all nightmare long", Im subscribed to guitar world and i have the transcription for it, so im not just taking crap

the noise is caused by hitting the A string and then fretting at the 21st fret on the High E then (if have) a toggle switch between picks make sure one pickup is turned completely down and the other is all the way up. Then begin to move the toggle switch up and down between pickups
