  • At 1:48 What year is that WGBH test card from?

  • @yuzuki120100 - Some time in the 60's I'd think..

  • At :49, What Song Is That?

  • To update: Chris Clausen has passed away from a massive stroke. He was a great V/O announcer and will be missed.

  • I remember watching WLVI 56's test pattern every morning waiting to watch Bozo the clown. I seem to remember the indian head test pattern screen. This really brings back the memories of my childhood!

  • Same here! I totally forgot about Bozo. I changed the channel when he came on. I just wanted to watch the test pattern (jeesh, what's wrong with me?)

  • Yes It was buging my why would be up so early to watch a test pattern. Thank you.

  • I remember getting up early to see the test pattern on WLVI channel 56 (now a CW affiliate).

If my memory serves me, the test pattern started around 6:45 AM. The first 5 or so minutes featured either a 440Hz or a 1 KHz tone followed by 10 or so minutes of music.

I don't think any other station in the Boston market played music during the test pattern.

  • I have the sign-on and off that you mentioned and I'll try to put it up next time.

Other stations like WXNE-25 and WJAR-10 played music with color bars, but I also only remember WLVI-56 running music with the 35mm test pattern slide.

  • Boy does this bring back memories! That "Off The Air" sound woke me up every time, after falling asleep in front of the TV, LOL! Thanks for posting this :-D

  • You're welcome. This is part 2, so be sure to see my part 1 video, and even more from my channel page; lot of older TV clips...

  • if i'm not mistaken, that same guy is still the staff announcer at channel 25 today.

  • golden years of television. hopefully someday they will do this stuff again

  • Kinda funny how WNAC Channel 7 Boston is Now WNAC Fox Channel 64, Providence, the sister station to WPRI. Channel 7 is now WHDH

  • Actually, WNAC's calls went to that Providence station. That callsign left Boston once RKO was stripped of its license. As for WHDH - those calls once applied to Channel 5 when it was owned by the Herald-Traveler - before that company lost that license, and another company operated Channel 5 as WCVB-TV.

  • YouTube is really something isn't it? And here I thought I was the only one staying up late and/or getting up early to tape these kinds of things. WOW! I remember all of these. The test patterns are cool too! Keep it coming!! JimMastersTV

  • Hmmm...got anything to offer, Jim?

  • Lots. I need to get it together and figure out how to go from VHS to You Tube. Also have to check was is allowable. NE Patriot I see from your channel you are right down the Merritt Parkway from me! Was going to subscribe to you, but don't see a link on your channel. JimMastersTV

  • Jim, I've subscribed to you--just don't have anything fancy to put up like logos etc. You never know when someone will try to screw around with your identity.

  • The V/O on the WXNE sign-on sounds like Chris Clausen.

  • It was. After Pat Robertson sold WXNE to Rupert Murdoch, Clausen defected to WNEV in 1987, where he is still heard today (and also now on WLVI).

  • Great voice!

  • Correct me if I'm mistaken on this, but after WXNE became Fox 25 WFXT, didn't they at one point use an NTSC version of Philips' PM5544 color test card? I seem to have a vague memory of them doing so, from a visit I paid to Boston in 1988.
