How did you know the Chickadees weren't vocalizing in response to your presence?? Maybe the trick to finding E. Screech Owls is to mimic them by squinting!!
I saw a screech owl in Colorado sunning itself in a tree cavity...I was amazed to see it...it hid when I walked by...but i went back to see it...it peered out at me...perched motionless and allowed me a few pictures...we are back in NJ now and we hear them often, but have yet to spot another
Does ANYBODY know the name of that owl that makes a distinctive 4-part call usually during the day/morning? It goes kind of like this: (Who, Who, Whoooo,Who) with a longer third "who". I live in Western Washington and have looked up great horned owls, Barred owls, barn owls, and screech owls, and still can't find it anywhere on the entire internet. It's very pretty and not very uncommon here. LabofOrnithology, do you know?
@youarelovedSOmuch Sounds like you are probably not hearing an owl but a Eurasian Collared Dove. This Eurasian species has spread rapidly across the continent in the last decade or so and can be found in your area now.
@LabofOrnithologyThank you very much for replying but I looked on youtube at Eurasian Collared Dove calls and it isn't what I hear. The call can be heard in both eastern & western Washington.I was wrong though when I said that the 3rd hoot was the long one. After listening to some more recently it is clearly the FIRST hoot that is the long one.Basically it sounds like this:"Whoooooo who, who who" with a quick break after the second hoot & a pitch change after the first hoot. Thanks again very much

I've only ever seen captive Screech-Owls. I hope I get to see a wild one, even if they're rare.
