Dec of 1989 I wrote this comment down in my history of info, I discovered it about 2 days ago. I am suprised I commented on Ed Parker with this. I do respect his theory's and knowledge. Even now I find him amazing. I will never forget when he died around I believe 2 of 1991. My teacher at the time Eddie Chong was suprised and shocked when I told him when I sat with him in Flint MI about Ed Parker dieing.
Guys!, Guys!. Stop the nonsense. You need the mix of boxing, kick boxing, judo and submission wrestling. Sport fighters also have a street style and they are in better shape in body and mind. I use to fight in karate tournaments all the time. When i had to defend myself I just adapted with a wilder side of me. It's called hit the guy first or push him to get it started.
The ability to injure someone is very serious. It should only be used to prevent an attack on you, not to settle a dispute. Assault can send you to prison. Only diable an attaker, do not use lethal force. I earned my black belt in Tae Kwon Do, at 19, and was a real asshole. Luckily, I didn't kill. Now, at 54, I avoid situations that would cause a fight. Learn to defend, not to attack. Avoid being in altercations, so you are not in a situation where you kill by accident.
I was picked on as a young kid, because I was small. My older sister suggested to my dad to send me to karate lessons. I grew up in Sierra Madre, Ca, and the only place to get lessons in 1965 was at Ed Parker's Karate Studio in Pasadena, CA. I was already quite athletic, and I really took to it. Mr. Parker liked my work ethic, and I earned my black belt from him at 17 And he didn't hand them out to just anyone. He also kicked me out because he said I was too violent, and I would kill someone.
he says it at all at 2:54: "get out on the street and prove it". Parker was of the old school generation along with Bruce Lee, Mas Oyama, etc. who would actually go out and test their shit in street fights to see what worked and what didn't. Not like today's nut huggers who watch two apes grapple in a cage and think that's what will work in a street fight.
LOL, when do you think Paker last used his moves in a street fight? 1949? Come on dude. If your comments were reality, Parker would have spent most of his time in jail.
Talon you Dig Bat MMA is not REAL. Thereis a cage and rules with kempo there are no rules. to say he would have change to fit mma would be like saying he would water it down. half the strikes we use in kempo cant be used in a cage some one tell me im wrong
You misunderstand me. In other words...We now know that the muy thai kick is the most effective and most landable kick. We know that boxing type hand strikes land more than flashy arcing type strikes. We know that a striker with no ground game will usually lose. We know that bobbing and weaving is better than blocking. I think that Mr. Parker would have seen the realities of it and adapted.
Boxing strikes are useless without a serious, 8 limb acknowledgement
A striker will dominate on the street, in overwhelming odds, over a strict grappler
Blocking is better than bobbing because it leaves you more prepared for counters, and also less vulnerable to combos (blocking does not alter your stance, but bobbing throws it right off)
How do we know this? Because you saw it on UFC? Another MMA groupie. Loyoto Machida uses Shotokan and he's undefeated. You can't compare the octagon to real life, especially with all that hard concrete, asphalt, and broken glass that makes life difficult for grapplers. Use whatever works for you, and don't bow down before the gods of Muay Thai and BJJ, as if those are the only fighting arts in the known universe.
@allinthemix10 The only guy who uses Karate? I don't think so. First of all, Machida is hardly a has been. Second, Chuck Liddell and Frank Mir both use Kenpo, Georges St. Pierre and Bas Rutten use Kyokushin, Neil Grove and Gunnar Nelson use Goju Ryu, Assuerio Silva uses Shotokan, and Seth Petruzelli uses Shito Ryu. People like you really need to stop with your facist mentality that any martial art that doesn't come from Brazil or Thailand has no value or effectiveness.
@talon115 The Muay Thai kick is the most effective and landable kick? Mind telling me the police stats on how many people defended themselves in a street fight with Muay Thai? The Muay Thai kick is desinged for power, but it's slow, and if you miss you miss by a mile. Karate has a variety of kicks, some are like jabs in boxing, others are like crosses and haymakers where you turn your torso into the kick while spinning on the ball of your supporting foot. Muay Thai didn't invent that.
I actually like ed parker, I just wish that he had lived to see the arts tested in the mma events. I like to think he would have adapted Kenpo to those realities.
You are another person comparing sport to true combat, easy to do when watching people in the cage. I'm just finding out how much Parker really knew, it was unbelievable, nerve technique, true ancient knowledge that MMA doesn't come close to approaching. MMA = Sport , brutal, yes, but not true combat
great material!!! I train another martial art, but Ed Parker concepts are very interesting and usefull in any martial art, hope people be more tolerant and listen to any grand master and see beyond the form...
I've seen the rest of this interview. A young Tatum comes out with Mr. Parker and demonstrates on him. Poor Tatum almost falls by the chi force of Mr. Parker and Parker holds him up. And Mr. Parker DID NOT touch him. Its true what he said" Don't pull a punch but control ur punch" WOW!
Well, it's just so rare to find vintage Ed Paker---anything. The guy was a major force, behind-the-scenes (and influenced SO many), but he was hardly ever at the forefront---which is why it's so hard to find any vids on him.
Ed Parker = Legend, not more to say!

You know all this how?
SarahSunwalker 2 years ago
Because I live in the "real world"...not black belt theater.
talon115 2 years ago
In the real world,
A Muay Thai kick is just a kick
Boxing strikes are useless without a serious, 8 limb acknowledgement
A striker will dominate on the street, in overwhelming odds, over a strict grappler
Blocking is better than bobbing because it leaves you more prepared for counters, and also less vulnerable to combos (blocking does not alter your stance, but bobbing throws it right off)
So how do you know all the opposite of what I do?
SarahSunwalker 2 years ago
You are wrong. But keep thinking you are right.
talon115 2 years ago
What I said is all just common sense. Who tells you it isn't?
I see you don't know.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
If he thinks his crappy moves are the real deal then he obviously never has had "pure knuckle meet pure flesh".
talon115 2 years ago
excuse me! they are not crappy moves!! I have done this art for 13 years and it has helped to defend me many times!
people like you annoy me! there is alot of theory to Kenpo, its not just moving.
really you need to try it to really feel it!
