BTW, any concerns about the glass breaking under heat? I've heard of this happening when people try to heat a real lava lamp on a hot plate or in boiling water...
Awesom solution to the lava lamp problem. It looks like paraffin has a density of 0.83g/mL at 71.1 degC (slightly below melting point) and 0.0.80g/mL at 82.2 deC (close to boiling point of isopropyl alcohol. Pure isopropyl alcohol has a density of 0.786g/mL and 70% isopropyl alcohol...0.87g/mL at room temp. (BTW, the airspace in my lava lamp base is 76.6 degC at steady after 4hrs.) I like the idea of using oil pastels for coloring te paraffin. Thanks for the video!
@12booked ya but you cant put an animal on your desk make it stay all the time and watch it when your board at your computer....unless its a fish but i rather watch a grooving lava lamp:D
hey, i used exactly the same ingredients with you, except for the beeswax, cause i don't know where i can get any of it in indonesia.. but why can't i seem to get the paraffin wax to melt inside the bottle of 90% alcohol..??
i melted the wax and the blue crayon outside the bottle, poured it into the bottle, waited for the wax to cool down and hardened before i get the 90% inside the bottle..
i am using a 40watt bulb to heat the bottle. it's been 2 and a half hour and it hasn't formed any blob.
@Alxmir23 --yeah, ...... glitter.....huh - huh.... -said in bevis voice... love glitter. my surfboard even has glitter on the bottom. you should check on ebay for these cool led light projector things made to splash light on your ceilings. they have one that looks like you're under water and a space one. they're super cool and cheap. and when i say cheap, i refer to price AND quality. not made very well, but again, cheap. so buy 2.
cool, what if i only have 99% alcohol instead of the 91%? will it screw it all up? cuz i cant seem to find 90% alcohol anywhere................... PLZ RESPOND!
Hi trying to complete making a lava lamp using the method you demonstrated in your 5 Part Video Series. In the beginning while the wax is starting to get really warm, individual balls begin to surface, and everything seems like it's gonna work fine.
However, when the wax FINALLY gets completely hot, and begins to look like lava, it just forms into one big ball, and stops moving.
I've tried tinkering with the amount of (70 percent ALCOHOL) over (91 Percent ALCOHOL,) but no matter what, the wax either just forms ONE big ball (at the top of the bottle) or One big ball (At the bottom of the bottle.)
I will note that I couldn't find the Beeswax Pellets that you showed, so I used
4 0z of."Murrays" with 1and 1/2 POUND of PREMIER CANDLE WAX.
Wondering if it's the fault of the Beeswax. Is this something that should be happening? And if not, what am I doing wrong?
the wax in this vid is enough too make like 100 lamps, the alcohol is a little spendy the bottles are kinda free cuz they are so easy too get from people who buy them would otherwise just throw them away. the dyes go long ways. so i guess if i spend a hundred bucks i can make every color como you can imagine.
I can see that, but I think the point of this video is to let you make one and put it in any bottle you want. Think any cool bottle you can put some heat on with a light bulb. Thanks for this information
i think u are going 2 have the best outcome ive seen so far!!

Instead of using 70% alcohol, can I just use the 91% alcohol and balance it out with drops of distilled water???
Greetings from Germany
