I ertainly agree that the intro by Brigss with the morph into the snow scene is soo much more to my taste than the Bowie intro and I too, really like and respect like David Bowie. I was very disappointed in the UK extended edition DVD that this is not the case and the cartoon intro is the only alternative that leads into the film.. the others are available but only as film extras..... I may have to buy another!
brings me back to my childhood traditions. never realised when I was younger how emotional this story is. I'm going to take a trip down memory lane tonight and watch it on VHS. might need a box of tissues aswell! :)
Superb animation and story, and always brings a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye when the Darling snowman melts and the scarf comes out of his pocket. Thank you so much x
I love Bowie, but I prefer the intro by Briggs. It is more meaningful since he wrote the book.... and the landscape morphing into that beautiful snowy scene...
oh my GOD! my family and i still have this VHS somewhere in our holiday movie sections! Sigh.... :) I last saw this at the age of... 8? 9? its been at least 5 or more year's since i saw this. man... has time really gone that quick? I wish theyd make more relaxable and more classics like this even if they arent by disney they're still memories from growing up :) we may not get our childhood back, but our memories never die :D
I am 17, this was supposedly my favorite film when I was little. I sat in the car as my parents described it to me and how I used to watch it all the time and how we constantly had to renew the tape because we rented it from the church we went to. I looked it up after a football game. It brought back all the memories and reminded me of who I was and who I wanted to be. I cried for longer and harder than I had in years. I realized how far I had come. Thanks for the childhood snow man.
I own the 20th anniversy DVD copy of The Snowman". As I daydream far too easily and I can get lost really badly, I used the "Santa" mode (ie "Santa" narrating the story as it went along) to watch this. It is a very good Christmas movie to watch. I often daydreamed at school and stared out of windows and learnt nothing. I need noise to keep my brain "on the job".
My mum threw this film away by accident and it's my little brother's favourite. He was crying because he couldn't find it. You don't know how much this means to me, thank you.
Alright guys, does any1 remember a film similar to this, was always played around the same time at xmas, and was possibly the most brutally depressing cartoon i've ever seen in my life. I think it was called Grandpa and it was about a girl and her granddad goin on all sorts of adventures before he inevitably dies. Can't seem to find any info about it anywere on the web, so wonderin if anyone knows were this video can be found online. Thanks
OMGsh this is epic, I haven't seen this since I left England in 1991, I was 7 at the time. I think my parents must still have the old popup book with music that plays when you turn pages.
@Mr5D1074 I think what he means is that there are better versions of this out there i.e it is available on DVD and broadcast in HD (upscaled) on 4HD - so he's wondering why those who upload have compressed the video making it look blurry/poor quality. Anyway, I love this brilliant cartoon. I do hope they don't replace it every Christmas Eve with the new version. That would be just wrong.
@JoshAlexful Done, just uploaded part 1 in 720p. Part 2 will be ready by tomorrow, but you may already want to check out my vid - it has a load of high quality versions of The Snowman in its related videos (though mine actually seems to be the highest quality, though it uses the Santa introduction and is widescreen), strange that they don't come up when searching for The Snowman on YT!
Oh my God, i still have the original one of this somewhere. This brings back soo many memories. This has to be one of the most original Christmas, not only that, Winter animations i've ever seen through my childhood and still rests as one of the best.
The first time I ever saw any of this was when I was 18 in the mid-80s, digitized on an Atari 520ST. It was the most incredible thing I'd ever seen on a computer at the time and set my mind right there to getting one for high school and university. So I have a somewhat different Canadian memory of The Snowman from most younger, British folks. :)
I was born in 1987 and can only remember life from 1990 onwards. I'm not sure I've seen the version without David Bowie before. assumed it was always him. What year did they start using Bowie?
I actually liked the David Bowie intro better. But this intro is also good, the author's own words speaking. I remember when I watched this short film all the time when I was a kid. The music is gorgeous.
