  • I ertainly agree that the intro by Brigss with the morph into the snow scene is soo much more to my taste than the Bowie intro and I too, really like and respect like David Bowie. I was very disappointed in the UK extended edition DVD that this is not the case and the cartoon intro is the only alternative that leads into the film.. the others are available but only as film extras..... I may have to buy another!

  • brings me back to my childhood traditions. never realised when I was younger how emotional this story is. I'm going to take a trip down memory lane tonight and watch it on VHS. might need a box of tissues aswell! :)

  • Why didn't he make another snowman -.-

  • Superb animation and story, and always brings a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye when the Darling snowman melts and the scarf comes out of his pocket. Thank you so much x

  • does anyone have it in at least 360p or a website

  • oh my god..this nearly made me cry...beautiful peaceful times ;(

  • @iberiano1981 i know

  • Why did the cat get frightened?.

  • @1993joshualiu Because He Saw The Snowman.......ALIVE!!!!!

  • Cough up 6 bucks and buy a copy of the DVD.

  • I love Bowie, but I prefer the intro by Briggs. It is more meaningful since he wrote the book.... and the landscape morphing into that beautiful snowy scene...

  • oh my GOD! my family and i still have this VHS somewhere in our holiday movie sections! Sigh.... :) I last saw this at the age of... 8? 9? its been at least 5 or more year's since i saw this. man... has time really gone that quick? I wish theyd make more relaxable and more classics like this even if they arent by disney they're still memories from growing up :) we may not get our childhood back, but our memories never die :D

  • A true classic. Magical and excellent. Not even a word through the whole film. A must see for everyone :)

  • My preschool would always play this movie during nap time. I could never sleep because I was so interested in the movie.

  • This is a very sad but beautiful story

  • I am 17, this was supposedly my favorite film when I was little. I sat in the car as my parents described it to me and how I used to watch it all the time and how we constantly had to renew the tape because we rented it from the church we went to. I looked it up after a football game. It brought back all the memories and reminded me of who I was and who I wanted to be. I cried for longer and harder than I had in years. I realized how far I had come. Thanks for the childhood snow man.

  • My favorite part is at 1:55!!!!! Check it out!

  • I hope I will live in such idyllic english countryside when I am older :)

  • @hello098890 It wont exist anymore. It barely exists now.

  • @hello098890 good luck :)

  • I own the 20th anniversy DVD copy of The Snowman". As I daydream far too easily and I can get lost really badly, I used the "Santa" mode (ie "Santa" narrating the story as it went along) to watch this. It is a very good Christmas movie to watch. I often daydreamed at school and stared out of windows and learnt nothing. I need noise to keep my brain "on the job".

  • My mum threw this film away by accident and it's my little brother's favourite. He was crying because he couldn't find it. You don't know how much this means to me, thank you.

  • i remember watching this when i was a child. i never thought id be able to find it. loved the orchestration and still do. thanks!

  • Alright guys, does any1 remember a film similar to this, was always played around the same time at xmas, and was possibly the most brutally depressing cartoon i've ever seen in my life. I think it was called Grandpa and it was about a girl and her granddad goin on all sorts of adventures before he inevitably dies. Can't seem to find any info about it anywere on the web, so wonderin if anyone knows were this video can be found online. Thanks

  • @rockyladali I think i may have found it its on youtube its called granpa

  • I still watch the cartoon every, I mean EVERY christmas and it makes me cry

  • Aww i remember watching this when I was little. I used to cry when the snowman melted and the beautiful music started. :'(

  • Omg I'm literally crying I never thought I would. Ever see this movie again

  • magical..and quite sad

  • i JUST LOVE IT

  • OMGsh this is epic, I haven't seen this since I left England in 1991, I was 7 at the time. I think my parents must still have the old popup book with music that plays when you turn pages.

    Thank you so much!

  • bester kinderfilm, erinnert echt an die alten zeiten.

  • cool if it was real! lol

  • 1 56 his butt

  • i so agree with the above comments the original intro is brilliant

  • Don't diss Bowie - He completed the Labyrinth you FOOLS!

  • @miniroll32 No! His tights did.

  • What was David Bowie's intro like?

  • I remember watching this when I was a kid!

  • hatten wir gestern in englisch geschaut....

  • is there some law that all snowman uploads have to be in shitty unwatchable 240p fuck

  • @mittROMNEY666 its the old version you cant bring it in 1080p just enjoy it in its magical original form

  • @Mr5D1074 I think what he means is that there are better versions of this out there i.e it is available on DVD and broadcast in HD (upscaled) on 4HD - so he's wondering why those who upload have compressed the video making it look blurry/poor quality. Anyway, I love this brilliant cartoon. I do hope they don't replace it every Christmas Eve with the new version. That would be just wrong.

  • @JoshAlexful oh ok

  • @JoshAlexful I'll upload this in at least 480p, sooner or later. Poor internet, but I'll do my best.

  • @JoshAlexful Done, just uploaded part 1 in 720p. Part 2 will be ready by tomorrow, but you may already want to check out my vid - it has a load of high quality versions of The Snowman in its related videos (though mine actually seems to be the highest quality, though it uses the Santa introduction and is widescreen), strange that they don't come up when searching for The Snowman on YT!

  • 3 people don't know how to build a snowman.

  • @Mi5terScratch lol agreed

  • wow Its so nice to finally watch it again I think i even still have my computor game for it somewhere.

  • Last time I watched this was in 2001 in the 4th grade. I'm out of high school now but this film will always remind me when I was a kid.

  • Comment removed

  • Oh my God, i still have the original one of this somewhere. This brings back soo many memories. This has to be one of the most original Christmas, not only that, Winter animations i've ever seen through my childhood and still rests as one of the best.

  • I love old animation like this.

  • Das hatten wir mal im englisch unterricht :DD

  • I still have a love hate relationship with this classic lol. Ending makes me sad

  • I did not realize this was a movie/show ect! This was one of my most favored childhood books though :)

  • Who are the 3 heartless bastards that clicked the "dislike" button?

  • His parents were ass holes 2 him

  • omg i was like 3yrs old wen i first watched this im 31 now...so many gud memories.thnks for postn it.

  • ...He didn't put any underwear on.

  • The first time I ever saw any of this was when I was 18 in the mid-80s, digitized on an Atari 520ST. It was the most incredible thing I'd ever seen on a computer at the time and set my mind right there to getting one for high school and university. So I have a somewhat different Canadian memory of The Snowman from most younger, British folks. :)

  • I agree that the intro is really important - "In the morning I awoke in a room filled with light and silence." Magical!

  • who else cried at the end of this film? i definately did... sniff .. poor snowman

  • I dont't think christmas has really begun until you watch this film.. beautiful in all its context.

  • I was born in 1987 and can only remember life from 1990 onwards. I'm not sure I've seen the version without David Bowie before. assumed it was always him. What year did they start using Bowie?

  • aww i love this movie :)) i watched it ages ago, it makes me teary eyed remembering it

it reminds me of my childhood so much :') and its actually a gud story but i h8 the ending, so sad

  • I remember watching this so much during Xmas when I was little...such a gorgeous little thing.

And now, Every time I hear Nightwish's version of "Walking in the Air", I get a serious attack of the warm fuzzies.

  • i saw this when I was 5...that was 26 years ago...thank you so much...fond memories of my childhood came back as I watch this

  • I love this film my cousin sent it over to America to watch and it was amazing! I love it so much!

  • dam this brings back so many memories

  • Im walking in the air ....... im walking in the Moonlight sky

  • Luv it thanks i watched this years ago when i was little x

  • I actually liked the David Bowie intro better. But this intro is also good, the author's own words speaking. I remember when I watched this short film all the time when I was a kid. The music is gorgeous.

  • i like this intro better than the david bowie intro.

  • childhood memories :) thank you very much for uploading:)

  • This is the best version because it's the original

  • The edited David Bowie intro ruins the film. This original intro is way better.

  • Ah, THAT'S the narration I remember. Briggs' slightly melancholy tone fits the story perfectly, and it's also perfect to see a bit of the Sussex countryside in live-action before we see its animated counterpart.

One of the best animated films ever.

  • this is the intro i remeber, thank goodness u put the best one up =)

  • I love this movie... I used to watch it when I was sick and it reminds me sooooo much of my childhood. Thank you for posting it :-)

  • Love it!!! My elementary teachers would put this on around every Christmas time. Great memories!!!

  • this is AMAZING! music is ahh lovely. 24.12 The snowman! <3<3 tää on nniiiin ihana. tää pitää joka joulu kattoo <3 From Finland <3

  • Original opening with the author sounding emotional is far better than David Bowie being cheesy. It prepares you for the tear-jerking story. :')

Cried at it every year between 5 and 14...

  • @tribecatom

I cried at it from age 3-20(my current age)

  • I remember this! To be honest, the ending made me cry!

  • Why did the cat get a fright?.

  • @joshualiu1993 because the cat saw the snowman and freaked out.

  • Where did you download this??

  • A very nice Story...

  • THis is awespme! I remember this as a kid, and always got so absorbed with the music and the story. Thanks for posting this, it just brought back a flood of childhood memories!

  • dude i am white.. and its funny how you answer to it all is go kill myself. is that all you can come up with? your just ignorant and thats all i gotta say about that.

  • I love this show so much. I always get so emotional through the whole thing.

  • Beautiful song, a classic in sweden

  • Beautiful.

  • I love all the comments on this video :P

  • And a Merry Christmas to you too!

  • and how do you know how I live? i prefer diversity. and and i live very diverse. and telling me to go kill myself after i call you racist??? ohh how dramatic are you? white people no ALL people should be able to enjoy life. And not have hateful people such as yourself try to irraticate a whole race. Who is the wimp now? Are you afraid that your ideology will never work. That one day there will be NO true race. Is that such a problem considering we are all human?

  • David Bowie STAY HOME!

  • THIS white person says don't be an idiot. Just enjoy the movie, xenophobe!

  • This is the version I have. But I think the speech at the beginning is slightly different and delivered by some else

  • i prefer the david bowie opening because its the version we used to watch at primary school back in 80's. good old days will never come back :(

  • @anaplat white people??? whit people only? how dam rude and racist is that? You have some nerve and you are people that make me feel disgusted that I'm even American. filthy racist remark!!!

  • i love this film reminds me of christmas

  • Really it should touch anyone.

  • yes this version is much better than the bowie version

  • This is fantastic - thanks for uploading the original version with the Raymond Briggs introduction

  • Thanks for uploading the original opening, I hate the David Bowie bit :\

  • me too!

  • I remember having some fun imagining what the story was...

  • i absolutely remember it (i'm 15 and i live in Estonia). this theme and this animation is so awesome it all came back to me now. there's nothing left to do, i've to download it.

  • This was the one version I definitely remember - I got the DVD for christmas a couple of years ago (I'm 24 btw) and there were two different intros: Father Christmas and David Bowie. The 1982 intro is definitely original and should have been released rather than the newish version.

  • To reiterate nickywuk, thankyou so so much for posting this original introducion. I prefer it to the David Bowie one, I think because its Raymond Briggs, the guy who actually came up with the story.

  • Happy Christmas everyone.

  • Thank you so much for posting the original intro. I have been trying to find this since I first saw it in 1982. David Bowie's intro was completely inappropriate and it should never have been released on the DVD.

  • I completely agree, whats up with all these people hunting for the david bowie intro...this was our roots

  • @nickywuk Totally agree about Bowie. Seems so cheap and tacky to get him involved. Was it not good enough as it was without having to get a "celebrity" and allowing him to hijack your imagination to make you think that's he's the little boy in the cartoon. Surely imagining that it's yourself is part of the magic?

  • This makes me close to crying :')

  • Wow..did you see the Bear? It was good too

  • It's so good to see the original Briggs intro again. Bowie's just doesn't have the same magic about it.

  • WHOA Home Alone Theme = 9:20

  • hey the piano sounds exact like nightwish - walking in the air :)

i love this movie! :) my favourite animation when i was a little boy ;)

  • this brings back SO many memories

  • This is so beautiful--I first watched it with my daughter who was five at the time--she's going on 24 now. Every child should see this. Lot's better than the usual holiday shlock they dish up!

  • I grew up with it. My grandmother was German and she loved classics so she made us watch it. She couldn't walk so she always sat in a chair facing that TV and a window that overlooked a field. I loved this cartoon but it always made me cry in the end, so she told us "Zen go build me a snowman." So we built one in front of her window. It never melted til spring.

  • Spring!??/ Jesus that is a long winter!

  • Even now 20+ years after i saw it in Greek channel ERT brings me tears....

  • wow, i just love this movie, I can't wait to see this movie in december 2009.

  • wow, i just love that piano playing that theme. and i can't wait to see this in december 2009.

  • what? are they makin a remake???

  • Now it become clear what the character on my old pen case was:)it's the Snowman!

  • an xmas classic

  • I remember having this on a video and before the film there was a short advert of this animated film about a little girl and her Grandpa. It shows all the fun they share together like story reading and going to the fair. But the end of the film is really sad because the Grandpa has died and the little girl doesn't know where he has gone.

    I remember it so well...

was it made by the same creators as "The Snowman" or "Father Christmas"

    Someone else here MUST remember!

  • Oh man I wish it was christmas already.

  • the intro with the man is never showen anytime i watch this on tv

  • I see The snowman every christmas, and I'm crying out my eyes every year.. I'm pregnant with my first son and he's going to grow up - seeing this every christmas :) - from sweden

  • same here. really good to know there are also people who cry their eyes out every xmas cause of this superb story. i am from estonia btw:)

  • Thank you so much for uploading this, the original Briggs intro has a magic all of it's own.

  • Really brings back memory from my childhood years, the show was (and it still is) one of my favourite things along with Father Christmas!

  • Howard Blake is the greatest componist trough the time

  • fantastic, its got the original (and best) intro on!!!!

  • Does anyone know the name of the intro narrator????

  • Nevermind.. It was Raymond Briggs! :)

  • Best intro by far.

  • Yep best intro. Beautiful.

  • best intro

  • I also love this intro so much better, it took me a while of searching to find this intro, the one I remember :)

  • i like this intro better, david bowie is so lame.

  • :'(

  • Wow I can't believe I found this. It must have been 15 years since I saw this, I remember the song was beautiful.

  • this guy does the intro so much better than the other guy

  • i love this one, im glad its up :)

  • Never even heard of this before! Love the animation so much.
