I'm just on to learn mandolin and i always wanted to play that song especially the begining...=)

  • I was wondering if I would be able to get some kind of cord outline. If not cool, thanks for taking the time to read this anyway. I'm not sure how to get a hold of you, or how to let you get a hold of me as I do not want to put my E-mail on this comment. Again thank you very much.

  • so much more to do in life than play xbox live... I wish people would wake up from their stupor. Too many don't see how enriching this is. thanks for spreading some of what being human could be on the high end. 22,077 hits as of this post... there is hope :-)

By the way the new addition to my clan of "Irish" jack Russells is named after this song. A temp name from the breeder we enjoyed and decided to keep. No docking of tails! The way nature intended it to be and so breeder leaves it.

  • My husband and I were very impressed with the sound you were able to get from this homemade mandolin. You also have a very, very nice singing voice. It was a pleasure to hear.

  • I NEED to get around making one of these.

    Great work.

  • I was just searching for "Beggarman" song, but You make my day with this guitar, BRAVO !!!

Btw... i was thinking about Ibanez, i'm gonna change my mind now :) :) It's important to play, no matter on what...

  • nice playing!

  • keep it up son, good bit of singing ,i'm making a mandolin and that looks home made too, character is what i call it!!!!if you make one the same ,try using a pilot hole thats almost as big as the srew ,its less likely to split the wood and if you leave a bit more wood on the head it helps too ,or try making wood pegs and drill holes instead.cheers,jake.

  • great

  • nice and has good sound . the song is tuonge twister I see. keep up the hard work.

  • Honestly, that's how I would imagine Abraham Lincoln singing.

  • This is wonderful. I love the biscuit-tin instrument, and your voice is mellow and very listenable. I'll look for more of your videos. Thank you.

  • mate fuckin legend

this is my new life mission

yopu are the only one who makes me feel the lyrics :) (for example "when i sad puu" :D:D )

  • I played Beggerman with Gaelic Storm at a celtic festival last year. Amazing song if you can get the harmonies right. Great Job!

  • Excellent !

When is your new CD coming out !...LOL

    You should !

  • Truly amazing as the others have said, I have a mandolin that I wish to convert to a biscuit tin, any advice would be helpful

  • Truly amazing! I believe this is straight to the core of what "cigar box" building is all about - only with addition of extreme talent and musicality. Great work & very motivating! :)

  • Fantastic!!! If I hadn't seen it, I would never have known it was an apartment made biscuit tin mandolin. On a side note, I don't know if you write, but if you don't write a song called Biscuit Tin Mandolin, I will.

  • Jesse, there's something truely brilliant about you. I'm enjoying the hell out of the Celtic spirit you seem to channel when you sing and play, as well as the good old, home grown American kid you seem to be. Astounding!

  • Argh! Cutest thing ever. And it has a good sound too; not exactly a mandolin but pretty damn close for a biscuit tin. Great work!

  • how did you get the sound holes cut out so nice?

  • I laid the tin over a piece of softwood, and punched them out with a screwdriver and hammer. The inside edge is sharp, but outside it's smooth.

  • awesome, just like your cat;)

  • AMAMZING!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • you are very good. i will try to make the same. very good!

  • Jesse, you're really amazing!

Have you ever been in Moscow (Russia)?

  • thats awsome, cool style of music

  • sounds like a banjo, tuned like a mandolin. it's a manjo.

  • haha i sang this song in school! great job!

  • Alles top banana!

  • what did you use for strings just regular mandolin strings

  • Sounds like an Irish Tenor Banjo

  • Thats cool. You have a good voice too.

  • That is awesome!!

  • Positive :)

    Good luck man.

  • Great Job Thanks for sharing!!

  • That's an awesome work you have done there!!

You should play in a folk metal band! :)

  • Nice tone.

I just finished an Asian lute made of scrap plywood wall panels and a pine board. I can't play at all, but it was a fun project.

I went with traditional tapered pegs. They're hard to make but might work better than the screws. You might also try carving out the neck under the sound board to see if it improves the volume.

For my next project I'll have to give the tin can instrument a try.

  • that kicks ass dude!

  • How cool, the cute biscuit tin mandolin, the song and your singing, all great! : )

  • hey man great voice! deep and warm

  • just plain awesome...it sure goes to show that it is not the equipment, but the talent behind the equipment. And I loved your tune by the way...nice work!

I just gotta try making one of those.

  • it sounds great dude! nice job

  • Love the mano!!

  • Are you canadian?

  • Sweet Mandolin!!!

  • You sound great. Your choice to NOT use factory tuners was a bold one. And hey, it worked!

  • What four strings did you use? Just so I know in case I want to make one of these for myself.

  • Shortbread is thee best

  • alls u need is a pipe and a dog on a string and the look is complete, a job well done sir!

  • de nicki! :D

  • wie geil !!

    super !!!!

  • That's awesome. Amazing job making music from trash!

  • Great!!

  • Well done. I really enjoyed the video clip

  • hey thats brill fella...well done

  • nice job man-lovely sound.

  • Absolutely brilliant performance, my good sir. May you live as long as you want, but never want as long as you live. Peace.

  • where can i find this tab?

  • yeah!!!

    that sound great!!!

  • For such a crudely built instrument, I thought it had a great sound to it.

  • very innovative, well done...........

  • Nicely done!

You could even screw in some bolts so you can use a guitar strap.

  • HAHAHA I actually did see the cat at the time 0:10 . whats it's name? :D

  • i think thats amazing.

  • heh, sounds better than my "real" mandolin.

  • Nice. Very nice.

  • FOCKING GOOD

  • Just awesome, favorited for sure.

    Amazing rendition for beggarman.

  • Bard, I know a few people (including myself) who have homemade guitars & mandos. The "not loud" sound is generally a common problem, many fix it by installing an amp jack into it. Then you have the option of doing alot more! -Peace

  • Amazing

    absolutly class

  • That is pure class mate, loved your remdition of the beggman

  • thats amazing. i want 1 now.

  • I would buy a CD as well, especially if it included instructions on making a mandolin~ Heh, you could just take this audio and put it to CD, that would be fine by me.

  • Wonderful!

  • Great job .Your vocals are perffect!you are a great performer i would buy a cd!

  • awsome dude I'm about to start my cigar box guitar tommorow...the inspirations we get from the internet. wow

  • very interesting

  • You're awesome.. this is really great, I love your singing and your playing.. keep it up Jesse :)

  • If I werent watching him play it, I wouldn't suspect it wasnt a mandolin... maybe one of those less expensive ones that don't have an amazing tone compared to Rogues, Gibsons, Fenders, Ovations... etc.

Amazing though. I tried to make a box bass guitar once, didn't work out well. I couldn't improvise tuning pegs :/

  • Thats Great!! Sounds good!! It has a good tone. Great tune too.

  • AWESOME! I'm playin the beggarman in "my" Irish Folk Ensemble for about 2 years, hey, this kinda interpretation is really cool, hope we'll do some records, so you can here ours :)

    More Jesse, please, more :D

  • watched the videos in the wrong order lol

like i said in the other video, love the mandolin! and another brilliant video.

  • Best ratio of musical quality to instrument quality that I've come across on youtube. Good work fella.

  • freakin awesome!

  • awesome! I think im going to try to make a tin whistle.....You know anything about how to make one of those?

  • Damn man, that`s amazing, you could hardly tell it was a tin mandolin!

  • were can you find the chords to this awesome song?

  • This is a real way to work on music, this is the evidence of your love to music. Good work man.

    Franc

  • hehehe; fantastic. as wonderful as herding your own sheep and going from sheep to shawl all by the work of your own hands. cute tune as well.

  • Very well done Jesse. I'm really impressed. U should get together with our Peter Pervis, he only lives about an hour from ya :-)

  • Jesse you'e Amazing.

I'll make my own tin mandolin,

    the next weekend.

    You are my Hero

  • incredibile!!

    grande!!

  • Different class Bard,

    From Glasgows poorest fifer.

  • you're ridiculous.... amazing

  • Bard, You are just amazing. . .

How is "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" coming? I know you get a lot of requests, but your style (and talent) just scream to cover that song. BTW, I am looking for the movie to watch. (The Butcher Boy, too.) Thank you once again for letting us glimpse your world.

  • Amazing!!! Great voice, great talent!!! Congratulations from Aragón in the north of Spain.

  • That sounded way better than I expected, perfect for that song. Beware of splinters with that pine neck, lol.

  • A man of many talents Eh!Excellent!you never cease to entertain me.Well Done best wishes x

  • So cool! One day, I shall learn to play the mandolin. XD For now, I shall stick with the doumbek(I know I spelled that wrong) and the baurahn(I think I spelled that wrong, too). Very awesome. Your voice is amazing!

  • Just as I always suspected - you can get a tune out of ANYTHING!! And a damn good one too if I may say so! Great stuff Jesse!

  • This has inspired me to make a harp out of rubbish. I will let you know the progress!

  • i like that your accent changed half way through explaining your instrument.

  • totally rad!

  • The sound is great and the song is perfect! :)

  • Outstanding!! I've got a cigar box uke, and there's just something about the goofiness of playing a non-traditional instrument that brings a crowd! Very inventive-Great rendition of the song as well!

  • impressive!

  • Very good. Now maybe you should do a 5 string banjo. Your creativity is delightful and inspiring. Also, you are a very good musician and vocalist.

  • you are awesome man..

  • Great Idea Jesse, yous so talented.

  • Out of intrest, how is the neck held still? did u mention some nails or is it just tension?

    J

  • I tacked it on with a few finishing nails, but I was also careful to cut the tin so that it would fit snugly over the wood. The tension of the strings, as you guessed, also helps keep it all together.

    Best,

    Jesse

  • hehe...redhaired boy...that the bugger!

  • Thats pretty cool

  • Somebody get that man a cookie!!! :) Nice work Jesse! :) Very cool.

  • awesome!! as usual.

  • Your speaking voice belies your singing voice. Well done on all fronts!

  • thats really impressive

  • wicked.

    completely wicked

  • very creative. The song was great... as always.

  • bloody awesome!

  • Crude looking but a sound as tasting as the biscuits from the tin. As usual a wonderful song to boot.

  • man, you really are something else...

    that thing is crazy!

  • nice
