I am happy that prop 8 was overturned but I am remaining cautiously optimistic to see what happens next before I start jumping up and down. Did you see the flash mob video celebration? Too cool.

By the way, I agree with you about it going all the way to the Supreme Court... I don't know if you read Judge Vaughn Walker's decision, but it's pretty bulletproof. It is filled with well established legal precedents, and it would be immensely unlikely that his decision could be overturned. Because he was 100% correct. Ironic thing is, Judge Walker is a Republican appointed by Reagan, and his appointment to the court was delayed for 2 years by gay rights activists protesting! Wow!! LOL

I hate how when religious lunatics talk about an "activist judge" ignoring the "will of the people," they ignore the the will of the 6.4 million people in California who had the good sense to vote against this bullshit. Prop 8 passed with 52%, so really the judge overturned "the will of about half the people." I wonder, if we managed to get a 52% vote to outlaw religion in California, how would the Prop 8 supporters feel about "activist judges overturning the will of the people" THEN??

My fear is that it's a toss up as to which way the US Supreme Court would vote, once the issue finally gets there. Four of the justices are consistently conservative in their votes and a couple are swing voters. It could be a great day for, or a total devastation to our cause.

The genie's out of the bottle now, so to speak, and there's simply too much awareness now (thanks in part to the prop 8 campaign itself, IMO) for there to be any real potential of getting it shoved back in.

Besides, the way Walker worded the decision was just so incredibly beautiful, I can easily see it influencing the entire political landscape in the U.S.

I know Prop 8 doesn't directly affect us here in the UK, but it is still a cause that I have followed along with many other people the world over. The fact that common sense has prevailed is uplifting for the spirit, because it shows a forward progression in the constant battle for equality. When I was a gay teen, they were still strapping gay men up to electrodes and trying to ZAP the Gay out of them! So, I'm obviously extremely happy to see another chunk of the intolerance mountain eroded!
