Liberty and justice for ALL....so yes...I am happy that it is overturned...because people are people and they should have the right to join in a union...you go Curt...I wanna see your wedding :)
Nice Susan B. Anthony quote! I had never seen that one before and how true it is. Cute with the fairy circle too!
I am happy that prop 8 was overturned but I am remaining cautiously optimistic to see what happens next before I start jumping up and down. Did you see the flash mob video celebration? Too cool.
Oddly, I heard about this the same way PaintedRavensong did, after I got home from work, on SYTYCD. I too hope it's a step for all states.
It is a breath of fresh air to see something positive occur in this country. Yes we have a long road ahead of us when it comes to the fundamental rights that should be granted to all that love, but this gives me hope that one day we will get there. In the meantime to quote Chad Griffin, "BE who you are, LOVE who you love, and MARRY who you wish to marry."
And I for one am a little bit tired of paying taxes for everything I buy- contrubuting to the salares of these people who set up in our goverment and feel they have a right to tell me what I can or cannot do.Its 6 grade school yard bull shit.Lets all grow up.I am a human first. Not a minority figure.
That is awesome news! I have an aunt who is friends with a gay couple and my mother is gay and if she ever wanted to marry someone I'd be very happy for her. I hope other states and countries follow suit with this decision.
By the way, I agree with you about it going all the way to the Supreme Court... I don't know if you read Judge Vaughn Walker's decision, but it's pretty bulletproof. It is filled with well established legal precedents, and it would be immensely unlikely that his decision could be overturned. Because he was 100% correct. Ironic thing is, Judge Walker is a Republican appointed by Reagan, and his appointment to the court was delayed for 2 years by gay rights activists protesting! Wow!! LOL
I hate how when religious lunatics talk about an "activist judge" ignoring the "will of the people," they ignore the the will of the 6.4 million people in California who had the good sense to vote against this bullshit. Prop 8 passed with 52%, so really the judge overturned "the will of about half the people." I wonder, if we managed to get a 52% vote to outlaw religion in California, how would the Prop 8 supporters feel about "activist judges overturning the will of the people" THEN??
It just never made sense to me why some people are against gay rights. If anything, guys should be happy that other men are gay because it narrows down the competition.
I was having this same conversation with a dude from work this week, and he was talking about how in his country(Ethiopia) men are still beaten up and killed for being gay... Fucking people still live in the Dark Ages. Really makes you lose hope in humanity.
I was SOOOOO excited when I heard this. I actually had been gone all day working on the rental and the way I found out about it was through a judges comment on So You Think You Can Dance which is live!..hehehehe I hope that this is a step for all states in the long run!!!
Congrats to you & everyone else in California. I think if Texas were to ever get on board, everyone else would follow suit. Even though Texas is full of bigots & religious fanatics... Hope springs eternal :)
RE the end quote from Susan B Anthony: People do what they want calling it the will of God (instead of checking this "will" against the scriptures). I can't tell you how many times I have heard "God told me...." and I wanna say, "Oh really? That's not what the word says." Conversely, some Christians are quick to apply the word of God to others yet not meet that standard themselves. I call it convenient Christianity.
What I find a bit crazy is that something like this can even get to a referendum in the first place, y'know? If it's the kind of thing that can be turned over by a judge down the line as unconstitutional, then why are people allowed to vote on it to begin with? Blah! Anyway, this is brilliant, and bring on the haters! There's nothing more exciting that seeing dinosaurs realise they're about to become extinct.
My fear is that it's a toss up as to which way the US Supreme Court would vote, once the issue finally gets there. Four of the justices are consistently conservative in their votes and a couple are swing voters. It could be a great day for, or a total devastation to our cause.
@Perroquet51 I hear ya, Marc. Even if it were to go that way, though, I doubt I'd see it as total devastation. The genie's out of the bottle now, so to speak, and there's simply too much awareness now (thanks in part to the prop 8 campaign itself, IMO) for there to be any real potential of getting it shoved back in.
Besides, the way Walker worded the decision was just so incredibly beautiful, I can easily see it influencing the entire political landscape in the U.S.
I know Prop 8 doesn't directly affect us here in the UK, but it is still a cause that I have followed along with many other people the world over. The fact that common sense has prevailed is uplifting for the spirit, because it shows a forward progression in the constant battle for equality. When I was a gay teen, they were still strapping gay men up to electrodes and trying to ZAP the Gay out of them! So, I'm obviously extremely happy to see another chunk of the intolerance mountain eroded!
I am so thrilled that this has been overturned! I just can't believe that it has taken so long for the courts to realize this as a civil rights issue. I've been saying that for more than a decade.
LOL - I was taking a sip of coffee right when you were at the end!
Yay! I'm so happy!! Finally some sense in the world!
I wish I could go to the SM Meet up. But maybe it will be an annual thing and I can go next year. I so love Santa Cruz and the cool peeps that wil be there!! I might even go camp in Big Sur for a few days...My favorite campground in all the world!
It's not a moral issue with those that run things. It's about money. It always has been. Everything is about money. If it didn't involve money, nobody who issues laws would be involved, and most of that money is in the insurance sector. Why are they involved? Because they just don't have enough of it already.
And when you get right down to it, marriage in the U.S. is mostly just about property rights anyway. "Traditional" this, that or the other thing changes by definiton from one conservative corner to the next. Even THEY can't agree on all the fine points... yeesh.
Judge Vaugn Walker is my hero..the precedents that he set here are validation of the contributions made by the many true GAY statesmen throughout history..The courage to face truth for the benefit of all humans , gay and straight, was embodied yesterday in this man, one of OURS!! :-D :-D We LGBT's to society = a net plus; the hater to society = ?????
