As far as I can tell, the instruments of this song are birds, guitar, cobain lyrics, and sinead singing. Yet this version of this song accomplishes more than your average 40 piece orchestra.
Okay so I'm a huge Nirvana fan and I love this rendition of the song. Personally I think all those so called fans who whine and moan about covers are exactly the kind of people Kurt never wanted his music to appeal to.
@kingcassoni You are totally right. The same kind of people that want their favorite artist to play the same songs the same way forever, until not far along the way they become a cartoon of themselves or blow their own heads off.
@kingcassoni I agree. Especially because those people probably never heard David Bowie's version, the original version of 'the man who sold the world' or the original version of "Where did you sleep last night" by Ledbelly. Those were also covers, but Kurt brought them with great respect for the composers of the song. Just like Sinead O'Connor brings this song beautifully.
Kurt Cobain wrote some of the most cover-able songs ever -- Smells Like Teen Spirit, in particular, is so universal you can play it in ANY style or genre and it still works. SO WHY THE HELL ARE SO MANY NIRVANA FANS SO FREAKIN' OFFENDED WHEN SOMEONE DOES A NIRVANA COVER? Hell, Kurt LOVED Tori Amos' cover of Teen Spirit -- he used to dance to it.
This is a great cover version - I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion but for so called hardcore Nirvana fans to slag this off is nothing short of pathetic and these idiotic douchebags should stop mouthing off if they're so narrow minded they cannot see that this is a different interpretation of a beautiful song. Kurt Cobain wrote amazing lyrics and had a lot of respect for genuine artistic and musical talent. I am confident he would have had no problem with this cover.
She is so forthright, and honest. It makes me wonder why I tiptoe around the truth as not to either offend, or reveal the person I feel I need to hide?
i think this is the only cover of all apologies i actually enjoy just becouse she didnt try to emulate kurt, his voice and stlye are just unique, like others try to she sang it her way and kept it respectful to him
When Tori Amos covered "Smells like teen spirit" she said about it being Kurt's Child and that Kurt's child was staying over at her place and spend some time with her.
I assume that Sinead O'Connor had a similar attitute towards this version.
I loved Kurt's unplugged version of his song. I have heard it 1000 times. But I love this cover too. Just different. Both are tremendous performances.
Its a great cover...She did it her way. I can understand hardcore nirvana fans NOT liking this, BUT, Im a hardcore nirvana fan, and I think its cool! Its a tribute. She would not have covered it if she would have Not respected Kurt's work right???
@TheAudioVengefuls I agree with u, for Sinead to do a cover of this song is a tribute to Kurt, nothing more nothing less, she adds her touch and that is cool, nuff said!
i disagree...it's a sharp contrast from cobain's rendition, because his voice was so raw...but this puts out just as much emotion, but on a feminine level....i think it's lovely!
What an unexpected cover. Nirvanna by Sinead. Now I've seen everything. I still think it'd be nice to see a Lionel Ritchie cover of a Smiths song though.
seriously -- pretty unexpected. whats even more unexpected for me is that i've learned to like this version so much (huge nirvana fan). At first I was put off by it's soft sound but the married/buried part is so awesome in this version.
She was perhaps not really straight in her mind but what's sure is that she had a lot of talent, really of her own, and thus must be considered as one of the greatest artists.
This Cover is awful. The hook to Nirvanas original was the riff the guitar repeated throughout the song. That blended with Cobains vocals created a beautiful melody.
She replaced that beautiful melody with range less singing over what sounds like a ticking clock. AWFUL
not sure why the single greatest artist of the last 20 years would lower herself to this level...to cover nirvana...everything she's ever done is GOLD! She is the most beautiful talented singer/songwriter ever. and THE best live show i have ever seen
Some argue that NIRVANA was the greatest rock band of the last few decades. This because of their originality, rawness, and artistry. In addition, NIRVANA's lyrics are much deeper than how most people interpret them. I mean, just listen to the lyrics of this covered song. Lastly, Sinead O'Connor and NIRVANA are very similar in their philosophies. I really think that you need to reconsider that statement because I think they are both exceptional artists.

You idiot Nirvana SHIT on Sinead O'Connor. Go get a sense of real music taste. She's covering this because she knows Nirvana is LIGHT YEARS better than what she'll ever do!
Are you kidding? Perhaps you should get out of the house more often. THE best live show ever? Who do you even have to compare? Let's see maybe that Milli Vanilli show you went to back in 1991.
i'm comparing that to the more than a dozen times i've seen u2, half a dozen peter gabriel/springsteen/sting shows, etc. i've seen pretty much everyone worth seeing...and in their primes. NO ONE delivered the goods like a young, passionate, pissed off sinead. its funny that all the artists on those amnesty international tours from 86-88 were the best artists of the last 25 years. no other artist could cover the artists that she did, and do them justice, & that many genres. buy her records!
I guess that everyone is entitled to their opinion. However, saying that you've seen "everyone worth seeing.. and in their primes" is narrow-minded. Did you ever see Nirvana? I'm sure that if you had you wouldn't think Sinead O'Conner's version better.
I think this is a very cute cover (and "cute" is by no meand meant negatively, here)...And I tink sebastian577 is right: Coverers should "do their own thing" - that's the "Cat-Power-Way" of covering songs...
Gotta love your use of Caps Lock and search for intensity. Where were you in the nineties (and before), where do you live? Iowa? The experienced ones are over intensity, emotions and power - and have been for a good decade, some of them for two, some other for even longer. How old are you?
Anybody know of a TAB for her guitar playing? I'm very new to the whole guitar thing and Sinead's version would seem to be easier to play-'n-sing-along than the original. I'll keep practicing the Nirvana tab, of course, but I'd sure appreciate having this one in the interim.
I'm a huge Nirvana fan, and a huge Sinead fan, and don't ask me why but somehow today it was actually the first time I listened to this cover. Well, not too sure about the ever thing - I think the crown still belongs to Sonic Youth covering I Wanna Be Your Dog, but... let's just say that was close. Definitely one of the top three covers of all time. Outlandish.
Hmmm...I'm definitely a Nirvana fan, but not feeling this. Guess it pales in comparison to Sinead's cover of Elton John's "Sacrifice" that I just saw on YT yesterday. Check it out, seriously! I watched Elton's video of it AFTER I saw Sinead's - what a hoot.

Tearing a picture isn't sinful.
As for the pope, didn't he intentionally cause the slow and painful deaths of thousands of african babies?
I think you'll find he did.
So one picture versus a pile of dead babies. Hmm. It's obvious which is more important to you.
