Out of all my guitars (I own 9) my ESP is by far my favorite to play and best sounding for metal. It also has great action with no buzzing. It's an ESP LTD H-20 with EMG-X active pickups. (an 85 and a 91) It looks just like the green one he plays, just see through red instead. ESP's are insane machines.
The best cheap guitar I ever bought(and still have) is a 1984 Kramer Focus which was actually made by ESP Japan before they actually got some recognition. Original Floyd Rose still keeps in tune with minor wear on the edges. I bought it for $125 and slapped some EMGs in it. Total cost for an ESP made guitar with top-notch hardware? $275. Beat that, internet.
Carvin isn't that great as far as options go. Their "custom" shop is severely limited with options, which is why they're cheaper than most other custom shops. Good luck finding anything from Carvin if you're a lefty and like a V-design. Speaking of which, they can't even make a symmetrical V-shaped guitar? lol I'll stick to Dean and Jackson, thanks.
when saying that about bolt on and neck-through well yea steve vai and satriani both use ibanez which are some how made with so much sustain both the guitarists from august burns red said that cuz it was a bolt on they use diff types of wood
Its kinda bad to use someone else's signature guitar unless it like a tribute though than that's just pure respect but if you just use a standard model its cool I mean more than 1 person probably like the guitar as it is but great reviews man kick ass
@TheKingdiamondfan he doesnt use a distortion pedal he goes straight into a line 6 spider III amp with "insane" channel on. that gives it the distorted sound. most amps come with an overdrive / lead channel now adays
I kind of agree with the bolt on thing. My guitar has a mismatched washburn neck and stock hamer humbuckers. Somehow I feel that the sustain is also pretty decent considering my rubbish bolting on of the neck and my pretty screwed Ibanez TB15. But i might need some advice for my guitar cause it doesn't seem to have a lot of crunch. Im guessing it's either the am, the stock Hamer humbuckers or my playing... How exactly do you attack the strings to get the most crunch????
Thanks, ive been looking at high range ltd vipers and they seem to fit me perfectly. I know several people who own them and they all say they're great. To answer your question, im going with esp because my friend who owns my local music shop carries them. Also, they are pretty badass!
i need some advice on guitars. Im looking for a kick ass guitar that excells at playing stuff like Metallica and In Flames, to be used primarialy as a rythym guitar, be can also play solos. Also, it has to a 6 string and an esp. THanks in advance for any input.
I wouldn't stick to one firm. Anyway, the best guitar for this would either be any of the upper range ESP vipers, or a Schecter Hellraiser, which would perform the role in question brilliantly.
@TH3C0RPS3R they come in your own specs, so if you dont like the pickup, you can tell them for a different one, or different color, or maybe a 22 fret one or 24, custom ;) your own custom guitar no1 els has ;)
You are DEAD WRONG about the WOOD in an ELECTRIC guitar making a big difference. People have done blind tests in a studio and the results were a big FAIL on people being able to pick the type of wood by sound only.
Humbucker, floyd rose, that's a metal axe right there, plus you have the Yngwie high-gain neck single coil sound at your disposal, plus the clucky single coil tones, you got metal, rock, country, blues, everything you need. Just because it's not a Jackson, ESP, B.C. Rich, etc. doesn't mean it can't do metal.
It's possible to disagree because the humbucker may not be very high output; but that can be easily replaced with an SH-6 or something, so I guess it's a win overall.
You don't need output, you need a good sound. Too much output results in a muddy, compressed signal, and that's exactly what you don't want. Do you think metallica, Priest and Maiden had Duncan Invader this or EMG that in their early days? They didn't need it.
'Tallica used EMG's a lot for the majority of their early career; since ride, I think.
And too much output combined with a poor amp does produce a meh sound. I think the Invader's he shows off are a good example, especially running through his line 6.
the thing about the strat is that it has a basic pickup layout and basic neck. but THE WORST thing about the stratocaster is the bridge design. it CAN NOT function like a floyde rose or edge trem system! it has 6 large screws bolting it directly to the wood and no pivot joints. if you try to do full dives (pulls just cant be done at all) and have the trem arm hit the body, then you are either bending metal (screws or bridge plate) or splitting wood and loosening the screw holes. very flawed trem
@TangeClown i got one and had it installed with 3 of the humbucker sized emg pickups, a floyd rose, and a locking nut... it is one of the best guitars i have ever played
@brandonmarks13279 well thats a super strat. pretty much a completely different guitar lol. i did the same thing to my first act (but only 2 humbuckers) and i put a jackson neck on it. so it really isnt a strat anymore. but when you look at a strat with all the stock parts, the bridge design is pretty bad.
ehhhh, some of them were amazing, some reeeeeeeally bad. they pioneered the cheap asian-manufactured sweat shop budget models, except they didn't do it nearly as well as ibanez and jackson can do today. 80's strikers were made out of fucking plywood.
@Max45090 I have a korean built PRS and it is amazing! It blows away a lot of other guitars I've played, especially in terms of workmanship and attention to detail
Hey just another question, i've just got a brand new Fender Stratocaster, and i replaced the single coils with Dual rail pick ups, the ones that are Humbuckers from the size of a single coil, They sound really really Heavy, What do you think about that? please answer
@Yourmomathon No it isn't, it is a sign that the two tones (since they were played together) are off by a number of microtones, the greater the rate of "trembles" the greater the difference in microtones. If the two tones are exactly the same, you will get a linear, consistent sound, as though you were only playing one tone. He showed that after using the Kahler bridge on the Explorer, the tuning stability went off, hence there was a difference where there shouldn't be one.
@ThePyroHobo A Schecter Damien would also work. However, if you want active EMG's, you would need money for those. I personally have no problem with the passive ones.
what about usa razorbacks. i own one and it is the best guitar i have ever played. its got the exact opposite of what he said. it has an original floyed and two brand name pick ups. duncan dimebucker and dimarzio
i use neck thrus becaus even tho if they warp ur fucked hard but its much more smooth and comfortable to play than a both on at least whe on the higher frets
@ESPSHREDDER1293 I use ibanez RG bolt on wizard necks wich in my opinion are much more confortable, thicker, and easier to acces to the higher frets, really good for soloing!
Stratocasters have a wonderful feel and can produce a very powerful sound with stacked pickups such as hot rails which is how Dave Murray sets his up. Not to mention I've owned a couple strats that have WONDERFUL tuning stability. I would rather play the Adrian Smith San Dimas Dinky and have a great sound than look original. Judging by your love of B.C. Rich you care more about looks than sound. Maybe twenty more years will help you get it right.
On the guitars that you say have bad tuning stability did you be sure to set the tension correctly on the springs in the floyd rose? If not then that is why the go untuned, you cant expect them to come from the factory perfectly set up.
schecter hellraiser is really beast only its really tough to get used to. and the neck is a little baseball bat like but not that bad, not like a gibson. its good for lead or rhythm and has a really crisp sound. oh yes, and it looks sick!
great video :), I have a question... I play on a squire strat and I'm thinging about buying a guitar that would be good for metal as well as funkrock & hard rock .. for example I'm a fan of metallica and RHCP and I would like to play both of that style of music .. But I'm not sure what guitar would be the best .. I was thinging about fenders and gibsons but they are really expensive. I would really appreciate if you would help me :)
Good point on what you said about Dean and BC Rich signatures. But if somebody plays a regular Dean ML, they usually get pegged with playing a "Dimebag Darrell" guitar. Just because he made them so popular.
dean dime guitar do actually do come with two brand name pickups just thought you should know that but i here were your coming from....nice vids keep em coming!!!\_/
i have a dean razorback v255, im not a dimebag copycat, although i like dime a lot hes one of my main influences, i play my way. The only problem i have with my guitar is minimal fret buzz.
I recently bought an Ibanez RG4570Z. It's pretty expensive but damn does it sound good with those DiMarzio pickups + it feels good. The ZR trem has worked fine till now but I haven't used the trem that much. String locks are great and it stays in tune for days, although the temperature makes the strings equally flat over time (but that goes for all guitars)
The comments in the video about Dean do not surprise me in the least. They have over 30 of those dime tribute guitars. I currently own Ibanez and ESP guitars. Looking out for another amp before I get a Jackson.
I have an alder body Fender Stratocaster with its stock Floyd Rose and a H-S-S pickup configuration. If I replaced the stock Floyd Rose with a Gotoh Floyd Rose and change the pickup configuration to only one humbucker in the bridge via scratchplate changing (thinking of using a Seymour Duncan AHB-2 Blackouts Metal), could I turn to the Stratocaster into a METAL MACHINE!!!???
@Nightwing690 I own one carvin and I have seen a lot of people play carvin's as well love the sound. Like, oh I don't know umm, Steve Vai or Joe Walsh from Eagles. By the way, I saved way more money on making my custom Carvin Ultra V than when I got a Gibson or Dean standard guitars.
For the Deans I have a Dean Razorback DB Floyd Lightning. It was a limited edition but it costed around $450. The guitar still sounded well with the Digitech Death Metal. Plus, I know that the usual neck pickup in the Razorbacks is the DimeTime, which is made by Dean Magnetic Technologies. I would say the overpriced models are the Gibson ones because they cost at lease 3K when they don't even have any hig-output humbuckers except for the Bullseye.
The fact that you mentioned about how un-original it is to get a signature model made me feel a heap load better for purchasiong a charvel model 3A off ebay for £350... I was gonna splash out on a signature G&L rampage for 619... please tell me im better off.
Yeah, Gibson don't take care of the instruments like they used to, after about 1991 they stopped caring about the quality of the instruments and just put shit out.
Also, the noition that Strats are not good for metal is completely faulty. Several major bands use them. Iron Maiden being one. Strats were used mostly on the Powerslave album, for example. You can see their guitarists using strats live on most of their recent (and even 80s) live albums. Strats can even do death metal. Example: The album None So Vile by Cryptopsy was recorded by Jon Levassuer, using a Fender Fat Strat (Humbucker, Single,Single), tuned down to B Standard.
@MetalKen But Iron Maiden puts rails pups in them... meaning humbuckers... strats can do metal... but with humbuckers... and if you can get a metal sound of a single coil, congratulations.
I agree about what you said about Dean guitars but, My Cemetery gates razorback , stays in tune perfectly , no fret buzz , very low action and has a great tone, had it for 2 years.Good guitar , just insane price. Just my opinion
Bolt-On having less sustain is absolutely not a myth. It's common sense. A set or neck-thru is obviously going to transfer vibrations better, it's not a myth or speculation; it's a simple fact. Just because famous players use bolt-ons proves nothing. Chances are they play bolt-ons because the are used to them and grew up using them.
About 1.5 yrs ago, a guy named R.M. Mottola (google him) did a study for American Lutherie (issue 91). using a spectrometer and a few other tests, it was determined that bolt on had a (slightly) longer sustain and that the human ear couldnt percieve the difference in sustain anyway.
That said, the major reason for the difference in sustain in guitars is the build quality and woods used, not the type of construction (assuming its constructed well) .
@Daemonfury1 Hmm I have played necktrhoughs and also I have bolt ons. It is a myth. The construction is NOT the norm for sustain. The reason of a better sustain is the way wood of neck and body interacts. There´s a video outhere were steve vai tells you about pitch of the wood. The sound will vary cuz of the interval. And in fact I played a cort necktrough guitar, it sounds plain. My Eagle pseudo brand bolt on just resonates better, and sounds better.
If you buy a Gibson Les Paul, you only have to buy once...... just kidding, I don't have a Gibson myself, but i'm getting one soon now. I have a dean razorback two-tone, bought in the US, and I live in norway, and if you wanna see overpriced, then come here. When I bought it in USA, it was about 1000 dollars, and then i did the math, and that was 4700 norwegian money(?lol), but here in norway, the price is 12 000 NOK, almost 3 times more, for the EXACT same guitar!! :O
I beg to differ about Fender, I play metal on mine all the time, also with the right set up, you can whammy the shit outta it and it'll still stay in tune.
Tell Jeff Beck that Strat trems have horrible stability. They arent as stable as a floyd but if you know what you are doing they are stable enough for most guys to get through an entire gig.
i disagree with the single coils not having crunch. my g&l sc3 (which is basically a strat on paper but with a mustang body) sounds really heavy thru a hardwire tl2 running thru a zt lunchbox and the trem stays in tune after wailing on it like steve vai 95% of the time. You wont get brutal death metal tones out of it but right now i have a great thrash tone dialed in.
about sustain: What influences the most on sustain? The bolted neck cuts a lot of the sound on most guitars, but it was not the case on your Ibanez Roadstar. Could it be the pickups?
man, that old roadstar smokes!

But I'm not sure what guitar would be the best .. I was thinging about fenders and gibsons but they are really expensive. I would really appreciate if you would help me :)

deans arent overpriced, and they dont give u one brand name like he states, they will most likely give u 2 emgs, or 2 seymour duncans
manbearpig470 11 months ago
Good point on what you said about Dean and BC Rich signatures. But if somebody plays a regular Dean ML, they usually get pegged with playing a "Dimebag Darrell" guitar. Just because he made them so popular.

BrUSomania 1 year ago
The comments in the video about Dean do not surprise me in the least. They have over 30 of those dime tribute guitars. I currently own Ibanez and ESP guitars. Looking out for another amp before I get a Jackson.

I have an alder body Fender Stratocaster with its stock Floyd Rose and a H-S-S pickup configuration. If I replaced the stock Floyd Rose with a Gotoh Floyd Rose and change the pickup configuration to only one humbucker in the bridge via scratchplate changing (thinking of using a Seymour Duncan AHB-2 Blackouts Metal), could I turn to the Stratocaster into a METAL MACHINE!!!???

your Carvin may have an amazing sound to you, but maybe not everyone else
Nightwing690 1 year ago
@Nightwing690 I own one carvin and I have seen a lot of people play carvin's as well love the sound. Like, oh I don't know umm, Steve Vai or Joe Walsh from Eagles. By the way, I saved way more money on making my custom Carvin Ultra V than when I got a Gibson or Dean standard guitars.
tuck234 1 year ago

I was gonna splash out on a signature G&L rampage for 619... please tell me im better off.

here's a good tip, GIVE US A PRICE ON CARVIN!!
Nightwing690 1 year ago
@Nightwing690 Here's a good tip. Carvin is company that deals mostly with semi-custom instruments.
Go to their website and price one out yourself. The price is going to vary greatly with whatever options you choose.
Razzy123 1 year ago

MetalKen 1 year ago
@MetalKen But Iron Maiden puts rails pups in them... meaning humbuckers... strats can do metal... but with humbuckers... and if you can get a metal sound of a single coil, congratulations.
Kingddd333 1 year ago
I agree about what you said about Dean guitars but, My Cemetery gates razorback , stays in tune perfectly , no fret buzz , very low action and has a great tone, had it for 2 years.Good guitar , just insane price. Just my opinion

Bolt-On having less sustain is absolutely not a myth. It's common sense. A set or neck-thru is obviously going to transfer vibrations better, it's not a myth or speculation; it's a simple fact. Just because famous players use bolt-ons proves nothing. Chances are they play bolt-ons because the are used to them and grew up using them.
Daemonfury1 1 year ago
@Daemonfury1
Negative.
MetalKen 1 year ago

Tell Jeff Beck that Strat trems have horrible stability. They arent as stable as a floyd but if you know what you are doing they are stable enough for most guys to get through an entire gig.

Kingddd333 1 year ago
i disagree with the single coils not having crunch. my g&l sc3 (which is basically a strat on paper but with a mustang body) sounds really heavy thru a hardwire tl2 running thru a zt lunchbox and the trem stays in tune after wailing on it like steve vai 95% of the time. You wont get brutal death metal tones out of it but right now i have a great thrash tone dialed in.

about sustain: What influences the most on sustain? The bolted neck cuts a lot of the sound on most guitars, but it was not the case on your Ibanez Roadstar. Could it be the pickups?
