I tried reading this book and had to stop. Not because I didn't get it but rather because it is the single most pretentious and childish crap I have ever seen. Intended for middle-aged women going through a life-crisis I feel.
And not even slightly original!! Old ideas rewritten for a modern audience and marketed well.
Epic win for Coelho, since it was the beginning of him finding his treasure for sure!!
@bohun28 it is all symbolic, if one does not understand the symbolism, then it is just a cute story. just like dream intrepretation, symbols are a language. if you don't understand the symbols it is all nonsense to you. like the parables, Jesus could not just say things outright, because most people will not understand. this book is really excellent, and i'm not having any sort of crisis : )
Can i ask why u put this music to the book intro? Its truly amazing, i;ve searched for this song for years to be honest and i find it under the one book that has truly held me in its grasp for a while now? Coincidence? For years I heard people telling what an impact this book made on their lives. It took me some time to finally pick it up and read. I have to say...its the most overrated book ever! I had trouble finishing it, but was hoping it might get better in the end..it never did. When it comes to fairytales I choose Grimm above Coelho anyday.
I know. Alot of people have the same experience as you.. I have read alot of books and alot of very good ones. The Alchemist certainly isnt one of them.
@dirkschuitsma i guess you ain't much of a fan of deserts but then again I enjoyed 11 minutes as well. South of the Border, West of the Sun? Murakami. If that doesn't do it for you then I know why.
Having signs and omens is an indication that you are on the path of your dream but it does not necessary make that it will come true and make you happy But we all are looking for happiness. THIS IS THE CRUCIAL MOMENT PAULO COELHO DOES NOT MENTION. i EVEN WROTE TO HIM PERSONALLY BUT HE WAS AS KIND AS TO BE SO BUSY NOT TO REPLY . I WROTE '' A HUMAN LIFE IS IN YOUR HANDS'' AND HE DID NOT TAKE THE TIME TO WRITE BACK ALTHOUGH I HAD IMPLORED
Humanity, for Christsake do not believe the signs blindly. The alchemist has been my guiding light 8 years in a row. I had extraordinary signs all the time about my dream but they brought me nothing else but misery and unhappiness. The book has a piece of wisdom, for sure , but it cannot be applied 100% in real life. Do not follow the signs cos they may be very deceitful and break your life to pieces.
I JUST finished this book not more then 20 minuts ago. I would highly reccomned this book, it's by far the most amazing material I have read, and for me It has been a life changing read. I have read over 200 books and I'm 15 years old, and this by far is the BEST I have read so far!
yea we all have treasures that await us... like this little girl I knew, she's been hit by a truck when she was 5. died on the spot... life really has a meaning!
@Maynard0504 one thing i got from the book is that children are already aware of their personal treasure and when we grow up we get distracted and lose this awareness and this connection with our personal treasure .. so in a way you can say some children are more lucky than some adults
@Preacha111: Yep Paulo Always replies when I write to him. When he's away some one replies on his behalf and mentions that he is away. He is great in connecting with the readers.
The Alchemist (and each of Paulo's books) has changed my life in a positive way. The Alchemist was my inspiration in writing my own book, The Bountiful Garden, about finding and following your authentic path..
Only one thing I didn´t really get, the book said that no-one would be stopped when following there own personal legend. But I got stopped.. at an part of my legend.. not really the dream, but part of the dream. I hpe his other books are that good aswell.. this book was very learning full.

I believe in my personal legend. No matter what I do or how complicated, unnerving, tedious, and antagonistic things may be, I will carry on. I will find mine someday :)

The Alchemist is a Master Work! I Love to read it over and over again especially when Santiago talked to the desert, the wind, the sun and to the Hand that wrote it all!
One of the worst books ever, written for an audience of bored soccer moms.
The main hero actually finds a treasure ( money does bring happiness after all!) , and the female character is the sort of cliché female who patiently waits at home for her man to return from his adventures, because that's what women do : live their lives only to stand by their men and prepare them by toilet-and-lunchbox for another sortie into the real world.
@Eastskov Now that is the worst misinterpretion of the book i have ever came across, the book in my opinion is full of metaphors and i boldly claim that the entire book is a metaphor, the money or treasure as you say was the goal of the kid when he found about its existance, and then the journey that he makes to attain that goal is the main moral of the story, hope, ambition and believe are the pillars that erect the pillars of a persons life.
@Eastskov That is the moral of the story and extremely beautifully portrayed by paulo coelho.Though i admit the female character is a bit cliche but all in all take it as a representation of family and friends who have faith or should have faith in you,if they dont then your life is meaningless.
It's funny how most people despise him in Brazil. Seems like the whole world really loves him. I loved reading "The Alchemist" it teaches you so much. The realization I've got is that you don't have to go so far away to find your treasure. Sometimes is right beside you.
@sylviad1965 Exactly the point...a close musician friend of mine once wrote the line in one his songs "You never know what you've got till it's gone", same kind of message i suppose... look at what you actually have, and you will normally stop wanting.
@sadcafeuk No one should ever stop wanting/desiring. People need dreams to thrive on. You just have to find the courage to chase those dreams, take action. You might not instantly get what you want, but you will find a deep satisfaction in the fact that you are indeed on your way to accomplish that goal you set for yourself.
@Element6tight Oh, please! Can not stand people who think they are something because they have read a good book, or seen a good movie, and also is proud of it! Ok, I'm your age, and have read this book but I'm proud of it? No!
@Zayrack the problem is that you are too young, or you didn't understand the book.
do you like futbol? there was a game between Milan vs Liverpool that was Champions League final , and that game still in my memory.
also all the humanbeing are diferent and we see the life in diferent ways, some times reading a book ,talk to someone, see a movie makes us see some kind of thing in diferent way, even a soccer game gives us some kind of motivation that we can use it in our lives.
@jettro82 I could understand a part of the book. Not everything was so easy to understand course, I should probably read it again in a few years, so I get everything.
Thank you Mr Paolo Coelho for giving inspiration and lettting us remember what we knew as children but forgot..the simple things in life matters the most, and if we really want something the whole world works towards reaching that goal..but still it´s the lifejourney that is the wonderful experience- eventhough that life can get tough somtime.
Dear Paulo what makes a great writer? To sell a lot of books? Don't think so... To have a message to a variety of different people helping to improve their thinking? That's fore sure, and you do both. However, I take a different line on similar issues, please check me out on - Paulo Coelho on Tony Blair - Val Piccinato responds
This book brought magic into my life. I could write my own book about that... now it's 21 pages full with synchronicities because after reading this, the story started manifesting in my own life. The climax was a man named Israel showing up between the bread and wine department in the supermarket telling me about my life. King of Salem. Melchizedek. I left crying. It's all about what you truly believe in and want in life... and indeed the whole universe will conspire to help you achieve it.
i had an exam for this story for my school and i got 43/45 i really loved this book and it took me a while to understand the message it wasen't simply go for your mission it was far more deep.
the book is definitely one of the most well written books of the 21st century.
Coelho, through his book, proved his readers (I'd rather say the entire world) that one must fulfill his destiny but keep in mind that the greatest treasures are just around us :)
0:28 why the hell does he have one eye? and thats with the triangle beneath it? methinks its a reference to the all-seeing eye. and look at 0:36. you dont htink that it looks like the pyramid has an eye?
The Alchemist is the pangea of books. I hope Paulo Coelho is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for this masterpiece! Thank you Paula, had to stop by for another listen today. Beautiful creation...Love and Blessings xo
Paolo Coelho's Alchemist made me decide to write a book. Never as great as Paolo Coelho. Its not even in the same genre and yet again it is. Have wrote Paolo Coelho. Got a response from one of his associates. Never the less. Since The Alchemist i am hooked.

@Vinnamese. No Vinnamese you are not a dumbass. You say that too yourself. Tip: Read the Alchemist again. And look further than the words alone. Feel it from deep inside you. Not from the rationalities. Because this masterpiece is a Philosophical book. Everyone can find a meaning. There are several lessons in there. Maybe something that connects with you. And go from there. :-) Above all. Enjoy. If you still dont understand. See it as a fairytale (for those who i might offended i apologize)
O yea I forgot to mention. When I first read this book, I sent Coelho an email stating how much this book has meant to me. I kid you not he actually wrote me back and I could tell it wasnt an automatic response, he actually wrote it himself, specifically in response to me. It was amazing, great book, great writer, great man. If you have not read this READ IT NOW!!
@Jordyjg It was so long ago I don't remember fully. At that time I was highly interested in becoming a writer myself, and I was going through some inner turmoil. He gave me comforting words, and basically told me to not be obsessed with what I want to become in life, to explore as many things as possible and to make a decision. Now, I can proudly say that I am a Psychology Major at NYU, and will be either applying to Ph.D. programs next year. I could not be happier :-)
Even though I'm not that religious, I finished this book within the day, because I was so hooked on it - then I had to read it again and again, because each time you learn more and interpret things in a different way. Extremely helpful... and very inspiring!
i read the alchemist first (loved it) then eleven minutes (really good), veronika decides to die (not so good), and just finished the Zahir (really nice) BUT i don't think any of his other reads compare to The Alchemist. i still hold the alchemist to be the best book he has written. i've skimmed over the others but i cant seem get myself interested enough to read another one... once you've read one, you've read them all... except of course The Alchemist which sits at the laps of the gods.
I personally did not like 11 minutes. Veronika decides to die was really good. Zahir was meh, The Devil and Mis Prym was meh, the 5th mountain was meh. One you should try though is "The Warrior of LIght" really good. And of course the Alchemist is amazing. Turning page 1 for the 3rd time right now :-)
hi i just finished reading this book and OMG i loved it. it was really great i also read By the river piedra i sat down and wept i liked that book as well but The Alchemist much better. So i was hoping that someone can tell me what 2 read next which other book by Paulo Coelho shud i read ??????
I've always loved Ennio Morricone's music. His music pierces through my soul and touches my heart over and over again... I wish everyone gets the chance to read this book. It has truly inspired me to find my treasure... thank you for posting.
The song is called 'Saharan Dream' (Ennio Morricone, Amy Stewart). I agree, it's magical. I love The Alchemist and this beautiful video Paula. I have listened many, many times!! Thank you : )
I am reading the Alchemist. I see myself in so many passages through the eyes of Santiago. I too am searching for my Personal legend. Love, the second obstacle mentioned in the introduction, is my obstacle. I can't wait to finish the rest of the book!

No!
Zayrack 1 year ago
@Zayrack the problem is that you are too young, or you didn't understand the book.
do you like futbol? there was a game between Milan vs Liverpool that was Champions League final , and that game still in my memory.
also all the humanbeing are diferent and we see the life in diferent ways, some times reading a book ,talk to someone, see a movie makes us see some kind of thing in diferent way, even a soccer game gives us some kind of motivation that we can use it in our lives.
jettro82 1 year ago

It's all about what you truly believe in and want in life... and indeed the whole universe will conspire to help you achieve it.

the book is definitely one of the most well written books of the 21st century.
Coelho, through his book, proved his readers (I'd rather say the entire world) that one must fulfill his destiny but keep in mind that the greatest treasures are just around us :)

Paolo Coelho's Alchemist made me decide to write a book. Never as great as Paolo Coelho. Its not even in the same genre and yet again it is. Have wrote Paolo Coelho. Got a response from one of his associates. Never the less. Since The Alchemist i am hooked.

I feel like a dumbass for not understanding the meaning of the book...
I read it and somehow can't grasp the meaning...
Can someone message me the meaning?
Guess I have to read it again!
Vinnamese 1 year ago

Jordyjg 1 year ago

Extremely helpful... and very inspiring!

i read the alchemist first (loved it) then eleven minutes (really good), veronika decides to die (not so good), and just finished the Zahir (really nice) BUT i don't think any of his other reads compare to The Alchemist. i still hold the alchemist to be the best book he has written. i've skimmed over the others but i cant seem get myself interested enough to read another one... once you've read one, you've read them all... except of course The Alchemist which sits at the laps of the gods.
thaii5 1 year ago
The Witch of Portobello.
amazing.thought provoking.
I love the alchemist as well.
pinkpopcornx 1 year ago
I personally did not like 11 minutes. Veronika decides to die was really good. Zahir was meh, The Devil and Mis Prym was meh, the 5th mountain was meh. One you should try though is "The Warrior of LIght" really good. And of course the Alchemist is amazing. Turning page 1 for the 3rd time right now :-)
