I've been to Belarus this summer and I believe that the people there don't need democracy to be happy. Democracy isn't flawless as it is a system which enables two idiots to vote out one genius. The Gorals that lived there supported being with Poland at Paris Peace Conference. The first fortress built in Gdansk was Polish. Brest and Grodno have LOTS of Poles. These cities either belong to Lithuania or Poland.

My own concern: I have watched Evangelicals (or Baptists) as they are often generically called in Belarus, lose some of the freedoms that they had gained in the 1990's. For example, some churches I know of in Minsk and other cities find it nearly impossible to rent a facility, and they are not allowed to build new churches! For the life of me I cannot imagine why the government would oppose freedom of Evangelicals in Belarus?
