heres a thing , I drove through town with a whole load of this playing and pretty loud... it was great to see how many people from that era looked and smiled nodding aproaval..
About 3 weeks ago me and my 13 year old son drove into Cardiff 2 pick his mam up after a night out with the girls....As we waited in the car, I just happened 2 have The Specials on the iPod.. My boy looked at me and I at him...His face was like what the fuck is this dad?... Me and him will be hitting Cardiff the next time they visit! lol
@1963builder Very true. We were spoilt for choice in the early 80's; there were still skinheads, punks, mods, and of course headbangers and new romantics. Something for everyone and it all seemed so exciting. People experienced youth culture together and it was very creative. The charts really mattered. Today's music is dismal. If anything interesting has happened in the past 15 years I must have missed it.
@bossendenwoodconvict I agree. The music of today is heartless. I mean, what happened to the days of bands writing their own songs, and choosing their own clothes? Now, it's all stylists and songwriters and lord-knows-what to produce music that appeals to the masses..
@bossendenwoodconvict i totally agree least we had top of the pops remembering listening to the top 40 on the radio on a sunday arguing with my brother while he tried taping it we had to keep quiet x i dont even know who is no 1 x

dude metal is my favorite stlyle of music and i'm only 14 but i love the specials
even though when terry hall left the band they fell apart... i don't like the songs without terry hall (except for running away) cause he is the soul of the specials. U remove him and the band is doomed (but they still rock though)
If you really think that The Specials did it all for the Benjamins needs to read Horace Panters book......Ska'd for Life. None of these blokes got rich. But we all got richer from their music (Musically, Socially, that is) And I thank them over and over for it, RUDY!
The Specials were/are only about a million times better, more relevant and more political than the Levellers could be in their wildest dreams. They were quite simply fucking brilliant.
The specials were a good band in their day. To say they were astute commentators of society is stretching things I think. There are many bands with a social conscience, like
Rancid, the Levellers to name a few. Music is music bitches. Dig
Eric Walkden played some session trumpet for them in the shine studios. One of the tracks was unlayered 'ghost town' no dammer vox and shit he took a studio fee.......
Does me a lot of good I'm in the middle of Oklahoma! :) That said, there's quite a bit of footage here on YT. Good to know at least there's some semblance of reunion. We need bands like this again -- smart stuff that makes you think a bit and damn, you can dance to it.
I totally agree. There's fuck all happening and there hasn't been for the last 10 years. It seems to be all about the image these days, and not about the music.
My thoughts exactly - no-one can pretend that money and fame weren't a good motivator for people like Jerry Hall to begin with, but you only have to listen to The Specials to know they had meaning in their songs.
"musicians" today don't care about stuff like that unless they are idiots like coldplay or u2 commenting on issues they cannot possibly make a difference in to give themselves "cred".
The Specials were truly a band of the times and some of their points ring true now more than ever.
They played meaningful music in a very troubled era. If people today do speak up about things like war/poverty, its in a real generic cliche manner to most likely appear hip or for cred like you pointed out.
Todays music just plains sucks. 90% of everythings either girly cries/growls. No one stands out anymore. Everything needs balance, and there is just too much cookie cutter BS. People need standards. If you're not in middle school you can see right through their "cool" image/hype. For shame.
@samnoper123 Fucking hell! That comment was ancient! I still very much stand by it though, probably more now than ever. For me, the 90's was the last decade of decent, honest and original music. I'm not saying it was the best, but it was most definately the last.
Sheffield (my home) has always been a buzzing city for music and clubs. It's all ego-driven, pretentious bullshit these days. Even the drugs are shit.
@judgenutmeg1977 there's loads of new music if you find it outside of the money machine. although it's mostly homemade on computer cause it's easier to get into and the restults are still polished if you cant play anything. plus you don't need your mates. dance music you may be familiar with is also probably "not about the music". i could send you a few tunes if you want?
one of my favorite songs. Dammers may see the education system as the rat race, but when you are a millionare, ledgendary singer, one art gcse seems preety irrelevent, and willdo nothing for you, while for us regular PhDs, to quote David Schwimmer, that race is quite a nesscesity. However, sooon afterThe Specials went away, songs stopped having meanings, and stooped into talking about sex and... well nothing, apart form various swearwords. thankfuly, the arctic monkeys nd oasis revived my style.
It's really inaccurate to say that after The Specials "songs stopped having meanings". Maybe in the mainstream pop world, but even then, alot of 80s/90s bands had some serious underlying political messages. It depends what you listened to. Oasis were just a continuation from other northern bands that had come before.

It's hard to put it better than that, mate ;) Nicely said.
There is next to nothing around nowadays that equates to "music".
xenoxiq 3 years ago 2
In fact I would even say today's "music" reflects the rat race that these earlier bands were so against. No wonder no one has any riot left in them.
