  • I think the 2005 version is better. It is shorter and very compact, but it compliments the drama of the perfect fictional romance of love/hate. Also in the movie the lines and acting are more colored as opposed to the bbc tv show. It's so boring here, you could fall asleep easily to this.

  • I love how accurate this is, this what I call adaptation

  • Hearts for Colin Firth

  • It is really romantic! And its really enjoyable the way Darcy becomes nervous. Lizzy must be quite shocked after seeing such a proud and haughty man who once insulted her for her inferior background becoming nervous in front of her! Go Austen!

  • Now this is acting,

In hollywod u don't have to do shit toasts, let the setting do it for you, just read ur lines, and don't mind the book, it's all about selling!

  • @ilovetabbycats3, I agree. The rain sets the mood, and it makes him look infinately hotter. Although this version follows the book.

  • That proposal was so romantic! To see how difficult it was for him and how nervous he was! I felt a heart flutter when I watched this first time! Why did she refuse! Oh! XD

  • If she didn't refuse him, he would never respect her!

  • @vielzeit Actually in those days that was the opposite, my Mother is a historian. It was most inapropriate to refuse and once refused they are usually not asked again!

  • @MissSixtiesPennyLane

At that point of the story, she didn't love him. You cannot marry only because his proposal is so cute. That wouldn't be a very strong foundation to build a lifelong relationship upon.

  • @DanielWindloff I am not a fucking idiot mate, it did not matter in those days whether you ,loved the person! I have seen this 5 times! Most girls were encouraged to accept the first proposal, most without love in those days! And I disagree if you watch the movie carefully it is obvious from the first moment they had a strong attraction, and at this point I believe she was already starting to fall, you could see it.

  • @MissSixtiesPennyLane

sorry, there was no offence intended.

But Lizzie is NOT the average girl and she's young, it might not be very realistic (because as you said, for woman marriage was primarly not a matter of affection but of economy ), but Lizzie sticks to her principles, which she declares several times (e.g. love match). Indeed she's very lucky not to end as a spinster, we all know Jane Austen's story. But due to her principles she refused Mr.Collins & Basically it's the same with Darcy.

  • @DanielWindloff Its ok, sorry I took offence... Yeah I agree she's not the average girl, esp of that time! lol.... I agree with most of what you said, Darcy's exterior was his upbringing, he was the richest of all men any of the girls married, I know I need not ramble on about society in those times and differences between rich and poor.....

  • @MissSixtiesPennyLane I know It's sort of a blasphemy to compare Collins and Darcy, but Lizzie refuse them due to her lack of respect and love. I agree with you, that Lizzie is attracted to Mr.Darcy from the beginning. But she does NOT respect him, his public arrogance towards the rural society devalues her whole life. Of course her life's not perfect, nevertheless I always had the impression of Lizzie being happy and pleased in Longbourn. She loves her family. (I'm sorry for the endless posts.)

  • @MissSixtiesPennyLane So here comes Darcy who justifies his impolite behaviour by the inferiority of the people she loves and lives with. In addition HIS company is far away from deserving respect (mr.bingley excluded), too. He accepts his stupid company due to their social ranking, but mocks the Brighton society due to their stupidity. A little bit ambigious. During the novel we get to know Darcys true character. But he represents himself to Lizzie in a very unfavourable manner.

  • @DanielWindloff I think she was attracted to him from the beginning cos she knew deep down there was more to him than what he shows on his exterior! lol.... I suppose had she said yes so soon, apart from what you said about principles, respect and love our movie would have been over sooner and less enjoyable to watch them both! lol

  • @MissSixtiesPennyLane The proposal sums this up. One more thing: For Lizzie the combination of sense and sensibility must be the foundation of marriage. As long as he proposes against "his better judgement" and "his mind", she's not convinced of a true affection. It's the same with her, her sense demands reasons to think of him highly and to love him. These missing reasons will be provided after the first propoal. As soon as she can respect him with her sense, she can allow herself to love him.

  • wouldn't you just jump on him straight away! <3

  • This happened to my mother. Same situation, same type of guy. She refused him.

  • Im sorry but the passionate chemistry version with Keira and Mathew surpasses the fish cold chemistry in this film with Colin...

  • I so totally agree...I do really like the just sitting there in silence part...I prefer the rain drizzling down and everything. That sets the mood for what hes gonna say, and her reply

  • @805Ringo I will always prefer this version. Not only is it the first one I saw, but I find Mr. Darcy much better in this. Matthew is nice and all, but he always looks more sad than irritated by everyone. I just prefer the expressions Colin makes to Matthew's. Although, I thiiiiiiink maybe I prefer Keira's Elizabeth.

  • im too lazy to actually read the book for school. can someone give me the full link for this movie?

  • I made my husband memorize this part and at least once a month he has to undergo this.

  • Damn it you're lucky! ^^

  • LOL!

  • @bortekm hahaha This must be great fun! Make him memorize Colin's part as well

  • i read down there that he had really fallen in love with her. and thats a good thing, while watching the movie i could feel that between them and it made the movie 10 thousand times better. i want to read the book.

  • Colin Firth is far and away by favorite Darcy. He's picture perfect in this role.

  • My fave novel of all times.

  • I luv the thousand positions Darcy takes for proposing Elizabeth! He is so damn cute! I LUV DARCY! :3

  • yeees!! haha NOW i understand u!! i luv him!! <3!!

  • What is so remarkable about this proposal is that if Elizabeth hadn't turned him down and said what she said, her married life would be devoid of any relationship with her family. It's because she turned him down and told him how his behavior was so rude, that is the reason he changed his attitude about his superior position and accepted her with all her faults and her family's faults. That is one of the many things that is so fantastic about this book.

  • I think both the BBC version & the 2005 version rock all the actors have done exceptionally well.

  • I think the only way for a man to propose to me from this day on is to start with: "You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you" *swoon* haha =D Even though he is arrogant, I would have accepted him straight away =D

  • haha ,, I still can't figure out if THAT was a proposal or an insult ..

    Pride and Prejudice ROCKS !!

  • just yesterday i watched all of the miniseries the new movie in no way can match up to the bbc series. the BBC version is brilliant an the movie sucked and matthew didnt play the role as well as colling firth. Collin Firth played the role as if it was written for him. The miniseries is better aswell because it is a lot closer to the book and the book was written when it was set.

  • hey do u have teh mini series episode!1if u do could u give me the link please!i have been dieing to watch it!!lol!

  • I've read somewhere that during filming Collin Firth really had fallen in love with her. It didn't work out as happily as in the book though.

  • Colin Firth is such a beautiful Mr. Darcy.

  • i like colin...

but i must say i prefer matthew...

i dont know, i cry every time i see this part in the 2005 version...

and the bbc version doesnt make me cry

    colin is great anyway

  • no way colin is way better the 1995 version rocks and its like 6hrs long! which just adds to the fun

  • How can people think this proposal is romantic? He's basically saying to Lizzy "I love you but you're below me in every respect". Good for her to refuse him.

  • @MissSticker But that's exactly how is supposed to be. And that's one of the reasons why she refused him

  • awesome...so much better than the "rain scene" in 2005's Pride & Prejudice! The BBC version is my FAVORITEEEEE..thanks for posting!!

  • Who cares? We all have different tastes. ^_^

  • OMG! LOL! He's hyperventilating! *gasp* *gasp* *gasp* He takes so much time just to tell her that. Matthew just says "I love you. Most ardently." There, you can say the same thing in 5 words without the *gasp**gasp**gasp* though it is better than I expected it and Colin does a good job, my vote still goes to Matthew. A well deserved 4.5/5

  • Firth acts according to the book!

  • I know, I read the book, I'm not an idiot, but I find the hyperventilating really funny. I know he acts more prideful and everything like Darcy, but I still prefer Matthew. (even though I read the book before watching the movie) ^-^

  • Hello- matthew mcfadden does the same thing! What about at then end when he goes "I love-I love-I love you" ? Colin Firth is the best Darcy (and waaay cuter than matthew mcfadden)

  • @JaneEyreRules

You do realise that hyperventilation occurs during a time of intense and high passion. You know what I am talking about.

  • Colin does a perfect job, he can only beMR. Darcy. I wish some guy would tell me how "ardently he admires and loves me."

  • after 10 years this scene STILL makes my stomach leap!colin is perfect as Mr Darcy!

  • I love Colin Firth, he's such a good actor!

  • The part that always gets me is "dearest, lovliest Elizabeth"

  • thank u i love it best scene in da show and has da best line "You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you."
