  • it's ....beautiful...thank you..so much....grazie....bellissimo...

  • Drew is a top drummer!!! he's so smooth but his driving is strong as well!!

  • Wow...that ending was holy.....as if the book of life was being shut and the music inside it was played for the very last time-

  • groovy

  • Roll base

  • NHOP's death grip finger's will forever haunt me in my sleep.

  • Moonlight Sonata-like ending. :)

  • i watch and listen to this clip over and over again, its just amazing what i wouldnt give to have seen him play live. God bless his wonderful soul. Hes legacy will live forever and thats for sure.

Also this piece was played with his right hand only as you can see he had a stroke and left had just doesnt function. Amazing.

  • @robertwhiteemail His right hand is playing for two!!!! Bless you for your comment.

  • Thanks God for Oscar Peterson.

  • maybe a little sloppy, but still ridiculous as always! hard to believe he's still killin with how old he is at this performance.

  • Does anyone know what ride cymbal that is? it sounds brilliant!

    Thanks.

  • oscar could take the best of them to school and teach them a thing or five... lol

many of todays so called artists could benefit from studying and appreciating his music and the passion it emotes

  • I first discoverd Joe Pass in 2006 then 2 years later I finally came across Oscar Peterson and NHOP......I was too late :*(

  • one of the best ....

  • we love you Oscar !!! we will never forget you.

you rest amongst the greates Musicians in history in Vienna. Mozart , Schubert, Haydn, Peterson.

  • @ANTONZANESCO YES!!!!!!!!!! Well said!!!

  • RIP Martin Drew. Now all three are gone.

  • Yes, having studied with the man back in the early 70's, his health....stroke..and age had affected his execution and articulation by this time. There are some other clips...such as the clip titled "Best piano solo ever"...short clip of his furious solo in "Bye, Bye Blackbird". Clearly between that time, and the time this vid was shot, there is deterioration. This isn't a slam at Oscar....but it is a reality of the impact on these catastrophic health issues on players.

  • @producer1 I have to disagree . Oscar still and will always sound good even with one hand.

  • @860125mwj One time in Oakland at Yoshi's Jazz Club, we sat right next to the piano and listened to Mr. Peterson SING and SING while he played! I was sitting at the right hand of brilliance on that day, one of the best days of my life. Bless all musicians, they give us such a lot of joy! Happy New Year!!!!

  • we all have our prime, and we all heading for the same place. nothing ever stays the same, still great!!

  • @davidwella10 u sure its a place? ;)

  • @JayIvory87 no not sure about anything who is:)

  • This starts out so calmly and then they start flooring it!!! Absolutely love this!!!1

  • nah dnt really rate this that much

  • @JudahKeyz . can you play half as good as he plays here with two hands?

  • @75pianist . Nah i can't actually.

  • Amazing performance in spite of his devastating stroke. Without the urging of his faithful friend and bassist Dave Young, he may have quit then!. And who knew that we would lose the wonderful young Niels much sooner than we lost Oscar?

Thank you and RIP both of you.

  • I sat with my eyes wide open, ears listening closely, smiling and shaking through the whole clip! This is jazz in it's purest form!! :D

  • I took my son to Yoshi's in Oakland in 2001 to hear Oscar Peterson. When we went in, the waitress said, I am so sorry but there is only one table left, BY THE PIANO!!!!!

Wonderful evening. Oscar Peterson sang and sang as he played!

  • @pcdj1995 I know I know, and he'll always be in a class of his own, even post-stroke OP. I wasn't takin a jab at him or this performance. it's only sad that you can hear, or maybe I should say "I" can hear, where his hands want to go, even start to go, but without always getting there like they once did. There's nothing wrong with being sensative to the reality of the performance, it was great, but don't insult OP, it wasn't his best.

  • @sachary and to add, his ability to be THIS amazing after his health problems and especially his stroke only shows the man deserves his place amongst the best of *all* musicians

  • One hand, thousands hearts and souls...This is Oscar !

    xF

  • For me he will always be in the same league as Bach, Beethoven, Chopin and all the greatest composers. He simply lived at the 20th century.

I miss him so much and this performance, where is age shows in his playing, makes me feel both happy and sad.

    A true God of music.

  • Big man!

  • I saw Oscar live in 2005. Simply amazing

  • how lucky!!!!

  • Lucky!!! Im sooo jealous!!

  • I can't see....

Is he using his left hand at all?

  • hes only using one finger on it.

  • wow... first clip i saw of oscar where the age really seemed to have taken a toll on his playing. just wasn't his usual, is all. he's still a god in my eyes.

and still one of my favorite pieces ever.

  • Bullshit! Oscar plays as good as ever. Perfection is his name! name one flaw in this performance.

  • listen, I love the guy, but he, himself, sets the bar fairly high for his listeners. And, since this is one of my favorite pieces, I notice the differences. His melodies don't sound as complete and full as they once were. hands, even as genius as those of Mr. Peterson, do get old.

It's still a great performance, let's leave it at that ;-)

  • @sachary dont you no the poor man had a stoke

  • you obviously are not a musician

  • @AmundLauritzen your comment on it

  • @AmundLauritzen the only flaw I can tell is I WASN'T THERE!

  • Wow, I think he's 80 in this recording and listen how much emotion he still puts in him music. Truly amazing. Oscar, you will be missed!

  • Wonderful...

  • awesome!!! oscar we will miss you!!!

  • unfortunately only with right hand :-(

  • ... and Niels-Henning also died. Maybe Ulf's breathtaking...

  • Wakenius seems like a dangerous Guitarplayer. He played with Oscar P, who died, He played with Svend Asmundsen whom also died.

But still he's a Godblessed guitarplayer!

Saw him wit Peter Almquist first time att Neffertiti, a jazzclub in Gothenburg, earle -80's, and he's still improvin!

  • wow you've seen him - you gonna die and i didnt and im gonna die aswell :D

    cheers

  • that's...a goodbye.

  • the best concert i was in my life!!

  • wonderful, inspiring to all people who have had strokes, even if you don't play the piano! bravo for youtube!!! if no instrument, get a tambourine!!!! shake up the vibrations with Oscar!!!

  • i saw him in copenhagen same year must have beind the last tour in eu. he was the best at all time

  • incredible.. also the guitar solo (especially at 4:11) is great.

    i also want a böhsendorfer ;/

  • bass strings are like great bells tolling, splendid!!!! you can go into a store and play a Bosendorfer!!

  • now i'm going to buy this DVD.

  • is this DVD just called a night in vienna

  • I know, thanks :)

  • i was asking not telling

  • oh, right.

DVD is called "A Night in Vienna", released in 2004 by Verve label. The concert itself was recorded in 2003.

  • Oscar Peterson a great jazz pianist, composer

    who is irreplaceable.

  • chau oscar

  • I saw Mr Peterson in Birmingham , England 2006. A shadow of his former self, (he played Satin Doll twice without realising), he struggled onto stage, played at half the tempo of his younger days and I would'nt have missed it for the whole damned world. God rest big man.

  • mr.peterson god have gave him talent and beauty

  • What a great year I've had.

  • The sad thing is, is that I've been listening to Oscar Peterson a lot the past couple of week to make me feel good, because my wife & child died in May, & then I find out he died. By the way, I've seen him twice in concert.

  • Nothing soothes the soul like the perfect music . . . May you come out of this a stronger man . . .

  • My conolences. I wish you strength.

  • i'm deeply sorry. be strong... we are all with your pain

  • Bye, Oscar

  • R.I.P. oscar...

  • Wonderful that videos such as this remain for the public to have some idea of what the world has lost in artists such as these.

  • This is a man who left such a huge mark on jazz music. Incredible man, and incredible music. I will dearly miss you Oscar.

  • So nice to have these clips reminding us all of the greatness of Oscar Peterson, but also of Neils-Henning Orsted Pedersen, who now both have left us!

    Thanks!

  • bye bye oscar !

  • Goodbye, Oscar.

  • May your music live on forever! You were great!! Thank you

  • how is the drummer called?

  • Martin Drew

  • hes still such a great player :)

  • I like how Oscar is so old but he still has that status. It's not like your listening to some 80 year old has-been jazz pianist, your listening to Oscar Peterson the most feared jazz pianist 60 years and running. He still is that good, probably until the day he dies

    and 3:40-3:44......wow

  • I meant to say Ulf Wakenius is brilliant!!

  • guitar player looks like jim gaffigan lol

  • Ulf Wakenius!

  • Magical.

  • oscar is a god. holy crap.

  • R.I.P. NHØP.

A truly fantastic musician. He played with wakenius in Balestrand. Amazing concert.

  • hes still doing concerts isnt he? does anyone know if hes going to do one in england sometime?

  • I don't know what year the "Theme" clip is from, but he's playing with NHOP and Martin Drew. Same two as this clip. So, how does a drummer playing with Oscar Peterson GAIN weight? It must feel like running a 26.2 mile sprint just when rehearsing.

  • Ohhh, kongen! (The king.) The bass player, that is. NHOP is missed.

  • Oscar is just a force of nature that won't be stopped!

  • Good stuff. Man, I love hearing Oscar play. He's still got it - even after the stroke and all. He's an inspiration! Thanks for posting!

  • Pure gold

  • the improv in the middle of this is sick! I started watching this not thinking much was going to happen, but that funk sure came out during the solos. thanks for putting this up, amazingbo

  • They stand (and sit) so close to each other, no foldbacks, their musical creativity supporting each other perfect SYNERGY

  • life is a bitch

  • Was that the Bösendorfer event at the Musikverein? Is the DVD on sale? I would like to buy it.
