i watch and listen to this clip over and over again, its just amazing what i wouldnt give to have seen him play live. God bless his wonderful soul. Hes legacy will live forever and thats for sure.
Also this piece was played with his right hand only as you can see he had a stroke and left had just doesnt function. Amazing.
Yes, having studied with the man back in the early 70's, his health....stroke..and age had affected his execution and articulation by this time. There are some other clips...such as the clip titled "Best piano solo ever"...short clip of his furious solo in "Bye, Bye Blackbird". Clearly between that time, and the time this vid was shot, there is deterioration. This isn't a slam at Oscar....but it is a reality of the impact on these catastrophic health issues on players.
@860125mwj One time in Oakland at Yoshi's Jazz Club, we sat right next to the piano and listened to Mr. Peterson SING and SING while he played! I was sitting at the right hand of brilliance on that day, one of the best days of my life. Bless all musicians, they give us such a lot of joy! Happy New Year!!!!
Amazing performance in spite of his devastating stroke. Without the urging of his faithful friend and bassist Dave Young, he may have quit then!. And who knew that we would lose the wonderful young Niels much sooner than we lost Oscar?
I took my son to Yoshi's in Oakland in 2001 to hear Oscar Peterson. When we went in, the waitress said, I am so sorry but there is only one table left, BY THE PIANO!!!!!
Wonderful evening. Oscar Peterson sang and sang as he played!
@pcdj1995 I know I know, and he'll always be in a class of his own, even post-stroke OP. I wasn't takin a jab at him or this performance. it's only sad that you can hear, or maybe I should say "I" can hear, where his hands want to go, even start to go, but without always getting there like they once did. There's nothing wrong with being sensative to the reality of the performance, it was great, but don't insult OP, it wasn't his best.
@sachary and to add, his ability to be THIS amazing after his health problems and especially his stroke only shows the man deserves his place amongst the best of *all* musicians
wow... first clip i saw of oscar where the age really seemed to have taken a toll on his playing. just wasn't his usual, is all. he's still a god in my eyes.
listen, I love the guy, but he, himself, sets the bar fairly high for his listeners. And, since this is one of my favorite pieces, I notice the differences. His melodies don't sound as complete and full as they once were. hands, even as genius as those of Mr. Peterson, do get old.
It's still a great performance, let's leave it at that ;-)
wonderful, inspiring to all people who have had strokes, even if you don't play the piano! bravo for youtube!!! if no instrument, get a tambourine!!!! shake up the vibrations with Oscar!!!
I saw Mr Peterson in Birmingham , England 2006. A shadow of his former self, (he played Satin Doll twice without realising), he struggled onto stage, played at half the tempo of his younger days and I would'nt have missed it for the whole damned world. God rest big man.
The sad thing is, is that I've been listening to Oscar Peterson a lot the past couple of week to make me feel good, because my wife & child died in May, & then I find out he died. By the way, I've seen him twice in concert.
So nice to have these clips reminding us all of the greatness of Oscar Peterson, but also of Neils-Henning Orsted Pedersen, who now both have left us!
Glad to have met you in real life. It was one of the greatest moments of my life to shake your hand and talk to you. Im sure you are jammin´ it up with the other jazz-cats in jam-session-heaven!
I like how Oscar is so old but he still has that status. It's not like your listening to some 80 year old has-been jazz pianist, your listening to Oscar Peterson the most feared jazz pianist 60 years and running. He still is that good, probably until the day he dies
I don't know what year the "Theme" clip is from, but he's playing with NHOP and Martin Drew. Same two as this clip. So, how does a drummer playing with Oscar Peterson GAIN weight? It must feel like running a 26.2 mile sprint just when rehearsing.
the improv in the middle of this is sick! I started watching this not thinking much was going to happen, but that funk sure came out during the solos. thanks for putting this up, amazingbo

For me he will always be in the same league as Bach, Beethoven, Chopin and all the greatest composers. He simply lived at the 20th century.
I miss him so much and this performance, where is age shows in his playing, makes me feel both happy and sad.
A true God of music.

But still he's a Godblessed guitarplayer!
