Laura actually went by "Bess", not "Beth", in real life. I'm not sure why this series changed it, but it's not such a big difference, I guess. And it was more of a mutual decision between the two of them as he also had a sister named Laura (and didn't care for the name, besides)

@Haniwa91 When they first met, Almanzo told Laura he could call her by his nickname "Manny." Accidentally, (and quite in love) she calls him Manly. He finds it cute and asks her what her full given name is. She responds with her name of "Laura Elizabeth Ingalls". So he decides to nickname her Beth from Elizabeth.

@AngelMoonGirl They had just discovered chloroform, which was basically a knock-out chemical like ether--they put some on a rag and made the mother breathe it in, so she was unconscious for her baby's birth. It was encouraged like epidurals are today, because it made childbirth less painful, but if a woman was given too much chloform, it was fatal.
